Ugh dealing with moving my mother into a sr apt. The delivery van is here and the movers are refusing to unload unless she gives them cash or money order for 3 times the amount listed on her paperwork. Claim the contract was changed verbally?
They are threatening to take her stuff to storage and charge daily rent, plus $160 an hour while they wait to unload.
Any advice? The sheriff won’t come unless violence is occurring.
UPDATE So sorry it got late last night!
While I was trying to get lawyer on the phone, she went to get the money order for the original $848. While there “the person” called her and insisted she has to pay the higher amount but the moving company would credit her back the overage because the contract mistake. Yeah right. Anyways she ended up doing that and handing the extra money order over to the movers in the parking lot before I knew it.
So they moved her stuff in. The boxes were in terrible looking shape, but the most fragile ones we opened so far weren’t broken (she packed herself). One piece of furniture was obviously dropped and broken. 3 boxes were missing to which we just got a shrug and suggestion they were still in NC.
At 1030 pm when they finished un loading, the hired hands left and the van driver then demanded $160 for the first hour delay, $250 for the second. The delay from when HE refused to start unloading. Had another 30 minute standoff until he left. At least she didn’t pay that.
So she has most of her stuff now at least.
Thank you for the links to resources for filing a complaint. Unfortunately the company she hired is different then the one on the contract which was different then the one on the texts/emails, which was different then the one on the side of the actual truck dropping off the boxes, so I’m not optimistic about any complaints. Sadly she really thinks she’s going to get the credit back from the company. If that happens I’ll be stunned and update the Peas lol.

This is apparently a well known scam. I’m sorry, I don’t have any advice. If you check out chrislovesjulia.com the scam was recently well documented, as they paid in excess of $80,000 for a cross country move. Their initial quote was $13,000 and the moving company kept demanding more and more money, in the form of cash or money orders. Some of their belongings were left behind in a storage unit.

Have a lawyer call the company and explain the filing that will happen first thing Monday morning under the Consumer Protection Act. Even if you aren't a lawyer, you can play one on TV. :-)

I would be livid. Have you called the main company? This is so wrong. Who do they say verbally approved the contract? I would call a newspaper or local TV station. They are gouging a senior citizen.

I may do what my son did. He rented a truck and hired movers at both ends to load and unload the truck. Oh and he drove from Orange County to Las Vegas to pick up the moving truck. That saved him $5,000!!

Why are they even discussing payment before they unload? That right there is a red flag.
Sorry I can’t help. Good luck!

Could you report it as theft? They have your stuff and wont give it back. Its essentially being held hostage.

Can’t get the moving company only some woman calling from a blocked number claiming to be the dispatcher insisting they can’t unload without the $2345 Instead of $848

ETA sorry it’s not on their blog, it’s on their Instagram. The post is from August 5 detailing their horrible experience. If you’re planning a move it’s definitely worth a look

I would call everyone I know and have them drive over and block that moving truck from leaving. Hold THEM hostage.

But I know a signed contract with a balance due should mean something right? Of course. And my personal experience is you pay when they finish unloading. Sometimes there is a deposit. A tactic of demanding payment after loading but before unloading seems tailor made for a scam. Interestingly, I just googled this and the Illinois Attorney General’s office is saying pay before delivery but EVERY SINGLE moving company is saying pay after. The attorney general’s site is saying you can seek assistance from governmental agencies but which agency it is depends on whether move is within a state or state to state.

I would pay them with a card and then file a charge back. Then make a police report.

Nothing is open it’s after 5 on a Friday.
Ugh she’s so stressed out and just wants to pay the money. Which she cannot afford. And would it be too much to ask movers to wear freaking masks?

I never heard of this scam. How terrible!

Maybe start blasting them on social media. Post on their site, on the local news sites, etc. Twitter is usually good for this.

They won't come unless there's violence? Better send someone out because there's about to be! Start shooting. I'm only kind of kidding.
