We had this happen to us once. We told them both that we were lawyers and that we were prepared to call the police. It took a few hours and then making a lot of angry phone calls but they unloaded our stuff. Now I have my employer (who pays for the move) arrange the movers .

I would pay them with a card and then file a charge back. Then make a police report. Conveniently they won’t take a card or check.

Can you get enough people there to unload the truck yourselves? I am so angry for you!

This just screams scam. ☹️ I’d call the non emergency number saying that your elderly mom needs assistance as she doesn’t feel safe with the movers harassing her for more money.

How would someone have that much cash to pay way over the contracted amount?
Is the contract with a moving broker, who then turned it over to a moving company? Please contact the broker, or whoever issued the original contract.
Let the management of the senior apartment complex know that this is happening. They might have dealt with this before.
How awful for your mom.

My nephew had this happen to him too, and after researching more they'd done it before to many people.

Ugh dealing with moving my mother into a sr apt. The delivery van is here and the movers are refusing to unload unless she gives them cash or money order for 3 times the amount listed on her paperwork. Claim the contract was changed verbally? They are threatening to take her stuff to storage and charge daily rent, plus $160 an hour while they wait to unload. Any advice? The sheriff won’t come unless violence is occurring. Ugh. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. One time we hired a company because I was pregnant and had a 4 year old. They showed up with a MUCH smaller truck then they were suppose to. Could not fit everything in. Hubby's parents were there so we piled as much into our cars for the first trek. Got to our location and they wouldn't let us have our stuff unless we paid an extra $500! FFS. And then they whined because there were stairs to the second floor and the basement which my husband told the company ahead of time. I stood pregnant infront of those AH and told them off. Finally they did their job. I told hubby to NEVER go with the cheapest company ever again and to ask people he knows next time. Next time we rented a big moving truck and enlisted friends. Free beer. Much better.

I am sure this has been resolved somewhat, but I would have posted on nextdoor neighbor and see if anybody close by would come over and help block the truck or start unloading. I am sure I my neighborhood all the Mrs. Kravits (my husband being one) would have hustled over to help.
I hope this got resolved without your mother being extorted.

I am furious on behalf of your mother. How stressful for her on top of moving. I hope it gets “sorted” without another penny passing between them and the movers never get the chance of doing it to anyone else.

Oh gosh how awful for your poor mum. I hope its been resolved by now and she's safely settled in to her new apartment. I'm shocked that the sheriff wouldn't attend though, after all its a form of extortion and they probably get away with it if an elderly person is there without support.

I’m disgusted that the police refused to come out to mediate. An elderly lady being threatened by a group of men holding her possessions hostage for large amounts of cash. Surely that is cause for a visit?

I would call everyone I know and have them drive over and block that moving truck from leaving. Hold THEM hostage. Ex is currently standing in front of the truck so they can’t leave. What a nightmare

There is a limited % that movers can change a signed estimate and it’s certainly not %100 or more.
The company I used estimated high so that the move would be the estimate amount or less guaranteed, and they accepted CC.
Since the thread is from hours ago, I hope you got this figured out, I would definitely report them to the appropriate agencies. I’m so sorry they tried to scam you.

I hope this was resolved and your mom is in her apartment with her things.
I’m surprised the police wouldn’t come. Perhaps they need to be made aware that this is a well known scam.

I hope your mom is moved in by now. How horrible! I have always heard of nightmare moving tales. From theft to broken items to extortion like in this case. It seems to be rampant in the moving business. I’m not sure why nothing is done to protect the people using these moving services. This is not a new problem or unfortunately even a rare problem. It seems to be the norm. I’m also surprised the police won’t come! If I call my police dept for any reason they come immediately. Keep us updated when you can.

I would pay them with a card and then file a charge back. Then make a police report. That is exactly why they are demanding cash or money order. In this scam they WILL NOT accept card payment to release the stuff. used2scrap, call the police/sheriff and tell them that you need to report a theft of “$xooo” amount of merchandise and that you need them to come take the report. That should bring someone out hopefully.

Let the management of the senior apartment complex know that this is happening. They might have dealt with this before. Excellent idea! Yes. My mom’s senior apartment has their own contracted movers and part of the deal of buying into her building is that you use them to move in. They were excellent, and we had no issues with them.
