Call the TV stations and play up the fact they are scamming an old woman. Report it as a theft. Get a lawyer. Whip out your phone and ask again and record them refusing to unload the items.

I don't even know how you managed to not kill someone. I'm like pea-level livid for you and your poor mom.

Thank you for the links to resources for filing a complaint. Unfortunately the company she hired is different then the one on the contract which was different then the one on the texts/emails, which was different then the one on the side of the actual truck dropping off the boxes, so I’m not optimistic about any complaints. Sadly she really thinks she’s going to get the credit back from the company. If that happens I’ll be stunned and update the Peas lol. Oh it will be a cold day in Hell when she gets her money back

Oh it will be a cold day in Hell when she gets her money back We ALL know that she will never see a penny. My 85 yo mother would probably do exactly the same thing, left to her own devices, so no harsh judgment against her. Some just get confused and anxious and scared when confronted at that age. And she just wanted her stuff/things. 😢 Those moving scammers are the scum of the earth.

LIVID
I’m furious for your mother.
My 84 year old widowed mother would have been so confused and scared.
We share this world with such horrible people.

This is standard. It's always cash before they will unload. And it's always about twice as much as the estimate if not more.

There are some evil people in this world. They are the scum of the earth when they target older people and are nothing but cowards because they now they are targeting vulnerable people.
Can you not report the one she hired as its obvious that they have passed this on to another company, who in turn passed it to another and so it went one.

This is standard. It's always cash before they will unload. And it's always about twice as much as the estimate if not more. I've done two cross country moves with Atlas (maybe it was Allied? I'd have to look) and that's not standard. Everything was handled very professionally. We did a walk through, i got a quote and paid by CC with a signed contract, my stuff arrived, we did an inventory check off before and after. i bought the movers lunch and tipped them because they were great.

Maybe you’ve always hired scummy movers, but no, that’s definitely not “standard.” That said, I too have heard of this scam and OP, I’m so very sorry that your mom experienced this. People preying on other people pisses me off no end. I hope Karma catches up with them soon.

katybee has the same idea that I have. I had a horrible experience w/movers when I was young. I was stupid enough to mediate. The owner got up in the middle of the mediation and said he needed a break, because of the damage I had done to his heart over the course of the year. (I hadn't spoken to him or contacted him since I refused payment due to the damage they did to my stuff, including totalling my fridge. He went outside and lit up a cigarette. a couple years later 60 minutes did a story on these movers. They were moving people in and then going back and burglarizing their homes. I was a college student and didn't have anything worth stealing. GO TO WAR! Take no prisoners. Lawyers, the state commerce dept, police, news, anyone and everyone who will listen. Make mincemeat out of the movers and do it NOW. You may never get restitution, but you have to try.
ETA: I just read your update. Now you should be able to file a police report. On Monday contact everyone you can think of who can bring this to light. File reports, do whatever you can to nail these people. I know it's a longshot, but someone has to be the person to break the case. These stories make me so sad and so very angry.

This is standard. It's always cash before they will unload. And it's always about twice as much as the estimate if not more. We’ve done 14 moves with professional moving companies. Sixteen moves if you count DD’s moves. This has never happened to us even once. Not even close. It’s not unheard of for you to negotiate with XYZ company and then have another pack, another load, and another on the other end to unload. There are lots of small companies which act as subcontractors for large moving companies. But the original contract still stands.

This is standard. It's always cash before they will unload. And it's always about twice as much as the estimate if not more. I've moved way too many times - this is definitely not standard. I have never paid a penny more than the contracted amount and I have never given anyone cash. I would have lost my ever loving mind if someone did this to my mother. The police wouldn't have to worry about only coming out for violence as violence would have commenced.

My spectator anxiety about these shenanigans was bad enough. I can’t imagine what you all are feeling.
I hope you can get some advice from this thread that will help you recover Mom’s money.
Predatory bastards.

btw: I mentioned way upthread that I had read on the Illinois Attorney General’s website that you SHOULD pay before unloading… and then I read, like, ten websites sponsored by big moving companies or consumer groups that said not to do that. So now I’m wondering if what I read was a typo. (It seemed so weird that I paused and read it over four times to make sure I was reading accurately.)
Again, I have never paid before unloading.

Your update SUCKS! Your poor mum. This thread is going to haunt me like that bloody thread about the chair. Any advice? The sheriff won’t come unless violence is occurring. I know it's irrelevant now, because your mum has paid the ransom demand, but how many removalists were there? If this happened to my mum or MIL, my brother, DSO, BIL and as many big male friends as possible would be over in a flash to prevent these scammers from leaving. There might very well be violence, if that's what the police require before responding. ETA: I just went and told DSO this story, and asked him what would happen if it were his mum, or anyone we know, in this situation. As I expected, he said there would be 20 guys arriving, surrounding the truck, and they would be getting the furniture off the damn truck.

That update is infuriating.
But at the very least, everyone who read this is now more educated about the sleaze-factor in this business and will be on guard for their next moves.

The update is awful.
We’ve used movers many times (cooperate moves) and this has never happened to us! I’m so sorry!

I've seen this type of scam profiled on the news so wouldn't hesitate to contact a local station's consumer complaint investigative reporter.
I'm so sorry this happened to your family.
