I was a volunteer who counted by hand ballots last night until 1:30 am. We were only counting the advance poll ballots and it was a lot of work.
You had to stay masked the whole time and no coffee/tea/water was provided. If you didn't bring it in with you earlier, too bad. A hot coffee at 10:30 would have been great. The facility that I was in (church basement) had a kitchen attached so it could have been done, with some planning.
The Elections Canada staff were running around in circles, and it was a real sh!t show.
I saw first hand at how the PPC was taking votes from the Cons and yes, the PPC did throw a big hammer in O'Tools back.
The pay is under $18./hour and the working conditions are very stressful.
I volunteer as part of my civic duty as a citizen of my country, to ensure a peaceful and a proper accounting of the votes.

I've worked as a DRO about 20 times over the years for various provincial and federal elections. It is a lot of work. I've heard rumblings from PPC types about stuffing ballots or cheating etc. If they actually knew and understood the process at the polls. There are a lot of checks and balances and a lot of people involved including scrutineers watching your every move.

I do think voter turn out was up Actually, according to Blacklocks "(e)arly turnout was estimated at less than 59 percent, the lowest in Canadian history, compared to 67 percent two years ago".

quiltz I'm surprised it is only $18/hr. I worked a few elecrions about 15 years ago and I remember making around $15/hr when the minimum wage was $8ish. I said the same thing $600 million to call and EARLY election during a pandemic. Even if you are happy with the results, what a waste that didn't need to be done right now. Seat comparison....it's exactly the same 🤦♀️ Liberals 2019 157. 2021 158 Conservatives 2019 121. 2021 119 Bloc Quebecios 2019 32. 2021 34 NDP 2019 24. 2021 25 Green 2019 3. 2021 2 Independent 2019 1. 2021 0

sawwhet -- There were 2 ballots with 'Jesus' written all over in black sharpie. scrappington -- It was hard to wear a mask the whole time, trying to talk softly and being under the eyes of the scrutineers. I was counting advanced ballots from one poll station. milocat -- My job was the lowest paid but also had the less amount of responsibility. I heard some DRO talking about working the advanced polls, how busy they were and no time to eat or restroom breaks. They were at their polling stations from 7:30 am to set up until after 8:30 pm for either 2 days in a row or 4 days in a row. They are paid about $24.00/hr. and have a lot of responsibility. 13-14 hr days and facing the public during covid. No thanks! I really hope that everyone voted, because it you didn't vote, no complaints from you! They are starting on counting the mail-in ballots starting Wednesday, so still some ridings could see changes.

LOL at Jesus. To think that they drove or walked to the poll station to mark Jesus on the ballot. But it's their democratic right.

One guy on the news said that if Trudeau wins, we know that he cheated...just like Hilary 🙃 I…what? She cheated to lose? He didn't elaborate ROFL. I had the same response as you. I was reading the comments on my friend's FB page. He is a competitive shooter so a lot of guns supporters. People saying that the election was rigged. Ummm, if it were rigged, why wouldn't they rig a majority gov't?😜 Also read that it's a popularity contest and that's why pretty boy Trudeau won. Well, I voted Liberal because their platform most aligns with my own beliefs. I don't really like any of the leaders so I have to look beyond the figure head at the front. Anyway, it's all done. We are never truly satisfied with gov't.

Poor BFF it sounded awful. last night.

Definitely an anticlimactic result. I bet it's bad news for Jason Kenney though - both Liberals and NDP had a few gains and I read an analysis that said the Conservatives are going to be gunning for Kenney due to his mishandling of the fourth wave. I'm not sad about that.
Edited to add: I really hope the Conservatives don't get the message that going more moderate is a mistake and they should stick solidly right. It's true they lost people to the PPC, but I think the issue is that it wasn't clear that they are truly a 'new' more moderate Conservative party. I think if they stick with it and truly reform the party, which may be easier with the right wing folks aligning with the PPC, then they will be a legitimate option for more Canadians.
