I love 80’s music and all of those songs but Lady in Red. Love ALL those songs but Lady in Red.. that one is like nails on a chalkboard. And of course I knew Rick had a gig on Sirius. He's not really a full time DJ.... just one of his many jobs. He still tours (although not sure since Covid... but up till then he was). And I wouldn't consider Rolling Stone to pick my top favorite 80s songs.. to me Rolling Stone always liked more of the alternative type music.. different stuff, not mainstream.. So I wouldn't consider what I liked compared to what they thought was the worst. All those songs make me happy... 10. Never Gonna Give You Up.. I mean really getting Rick Rolled these days.. so funny... 9. Puttin on the Ritz... Just weird and different but fun 8. Mickey... who didn't do the cheerleader dance? haha.. My sister LOVED this one and she was the queen of The Cure/INXS.. but still Mickey had a spot in her heart. 7. Don't Worry ... I was a huge Tom Cruise fan so this one was from my then favorite flix.. Cocktail 6. Rock Me Amadeus.. just weird but kept my attention most of the time 5. The Safety Dance.. saw this group with Rick Springfield live.. so you just have to do the Safety Dance 4. Wake Me Up... awwww they day I found out George was gay.. was pretty sad.. those short shorts.. 3. Lady in Red... YIKES blech make me gag with a spoon, turn the radio station asap 2. The Final Countdown... my blare it out the window song... at least one of them 1. We Built this City... always couldn't wait to hear the version where they would play my own hometown radio station part of the song. Edited to add: To me the 80s will be my all time favorite music and fashion.. it was the best. I can remember being excited about going shopping and finding the 'right' outfit. Not like today. The only thing that drove me nuts is that I was tall and pants never fit me. So until capris came in style that was my huge struggle..

How is Eddie Murphy “Party All the Time” not on this list?!?!?! Or Rodney Dangerfield with “Rappin Rodney”?!? Now THAT is an awful song! 🤣 I don’t mind most of those, but will change the channel on “Lady in Red” every single damn time. I was coming to mention the 80's actors who thought it would be a great idea to try and sing. Eddie Murphy like you said, and also Don Johnson with this horrible "Heartbeat" song. Patrick Swayze had one, She's Like the Wind, but I rather liked that one.
I hated then and still hate Stevie Nicks Talk to Me. Her voice is nails on a chalkboard to me.
I agree that We Built This City is pretty awful but I do like the other songs on that list though.

I listen to 80s on 8 quite a bit, and those are all songs played, some of them too much. But I still like them all, and sing along

I guess I wasn’t listening to these types of songs in the 80s. I was listening to the Pretenders, REM, the Ramones, the Smiths, Romeo Void, the Fixx, U2, the B-52s, and others I’m pretty sure nobody’s ever heard of. I was in Germany listening to a lot of European stuff that either didn't really make it over here, or came later on. I was well immersed in Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths, The Housemartins, early Flock of Seagulls, as well as lots of SKA.

10. Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up' 9. Taco - 'Puttin' On The Ritz'8. Toni Basil - 'Mickey'7. Bobby McFerrin - 'Don't Worry Be Happy' 6. Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus'5. Men Without Hats - 'The Safety Dance' 4. Wham! - 'Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)' 3. Chris de Burgh - 'Lady In Red' 2. Europe - 'The Final Countdown' 1. Starship - 'We Built This City'I love the songs I bolded! I think more because they IMMEDIATELY take me back to a particular time than because of anything musically redeeming about them. lol. But that song from Starship is one of my very favorite 80s songs, actually... maybe they're not 'musically' great or anything, but they're all quintessential 1980s. Personally I DO hate the Safety Dance, and the Lady in Red? blech, blech, blech!!! Don't Worry, Be Happy is just too overplayed, and well, Rick Astley is just a meme, now, so... Favorite or worst songs of an entire decade is too personal of a thing to distill down to a list of 10, in my opinion. ETA: since my name is Jennifer, and I graduated HS in 1987, I got a lot of teasing over 867-5309 during school. I was NEVER a *Jenny* but a "Jennifer" but that didn't stop my classmates. I do like the song, though, and will STILL sing along, lol!! I agree with whoever said all these songs were way overplayed... but yeah, Lady in Red IS like nails on a chalkboard. My DH STILL loves, loves, loves Duran Duran, and will blast it loud enough to shake the windows, so he can play his bass guitar to it. ANYTHING starts to sound bad after you've heard it repeated over and over ad nauseum. and Fred Astaire's version of Puttin' on the Ritz is soooo much better than the 1980s version!! But that's because I always had a crush on Fred Astaire- singing AND dancing? swoon!!! although I will still sing along to the 80s version. And as for Rick Springfield, one of my guilty favorites is his movie 'Hard to Hold' lol.

I mostly agree with the list, lol. Especially "We built this City". OMG it was playing non stop in the bay area where I was living at the time and it was like the freaking ANTHEM. I could not take my morning shower without that song on the radio and I hated it.
I agree with Lady in Red -his voice! I hate his voice! He came off like a whiney little b to me. Oh shut up I used to think in irritation. "You can't have her! She's too good for you!"
I remember trying to get into "Don't worry be Happy' because everyone loved it and the 'message..' but no. The video was cute w/Robin Williams but mostly I switched the station quickly to get that ear worm out of my head.
and although I get the significance of "Video Killed the Radio Star' being the very first video played when MTV went national..but honestly I hate that that is THE first video. The worst.

Thought of a couple more,
Take my Breath Away - Berlin More Than Words - Extreme (1990 but close enough) The lyrics are nothing more than a version of 'if you loved me you'd let me'. I hate it so much.

I'd have to think a bit to compile my personal top ten worst, but the following would definitely be on it:
Mr. Roboto - Styx Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
I mostly listened to new wave/alternative in the 80s, so I only heard these songs when my roommate secretly changed the radio station from KROQ to KISS FM while I was in the shower. 😄
I was/am a shy introvert but there were four 80's songs that could get me on the dance floor:
Situation - Yaz/Yazoo Blue Monday - New Order Dancing with Myself - Billy Idol Anxious - The Housemartins
(ETA: And no one ever played the Housemartins at dances!)

Love 1980s music, but I do agree some songs were just horrible. Their list.......some I agree with.
I think we should add to the detest list: "she blinded me with science" and "Let's get physical"

www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/readers-poll-the-10-worst-songs-of-the-1980s-20488/1-starship-we-built-this-city-17392/10. Rick Astley - 'Never Gonna Give You Up' (Yes!) 9. Taco - 'Puttin' On The Ritz' (I love this one. I know it's bad, but I don't care!) 8. Toni Basil - 'Mickey' (Bad, but not horribly bad!) 7. Bobby McFerrin - 'Don't Worry Be Happy' (100% bad! On my list.) 6. Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus' (Silly fun. Bad song, but fun song!) 5. Men Without Hats - 'The Safety Dance' (I love this one. Take it out of the list. This is iconic.) 4. Wham! - 'Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)' (Not on my top 10. Not good, but catchy! And hot pink shorts!) 3. Chris de Burgh - 'Lady In Red' (Yes, bad!) 2. Europe - 'The Final Countdown' (Yes, bad!) 1. Starship - 'We Built This City' (This is my absolute #1 worst song of the 80s. I can't relate to anyone who likes it!)

I can never take these lists seriously. It’s all subjective. Someone can explain all day long why a particular song is the best/worst ever, doesn’t mean I’m going to like it or hate it. I’ve noticed that the 80’s seem to be getting an extra dose of hate lately in a lot of areas. Don’t come at me with shitty 80’s fashion when girls today are wearing high rise jeans and crop tops, a staple of my teenage 80’s wardrobe.
My first love is pop/R&B 1970-1990. If I can sing along I’m there. The older I get the less I listen to new music, it all sounds the same. There are some artists and songs that break through to me, but I’m happy with the amount of music available to me that I love. Part of the problem is that I don’t listen to commercial radio where I don’t get any control over what I hear, other genre.

I don't love any of those but I sang each one while reading. It's impossible for me to separate those songs from the era, good or bad.

I LOVED Yaz...Upstairs at Eric's best album E.V.E.R.!!!! I have been a U2 fan since the beginning. One of the best concerts I ever went to (second only to Eric Clapton) was U2 at JFK Stadium in Philly. I was down in front. Little Steven opened for them and Bruce Springsteen made a guest appearance. AGH!!!! While they were singing "Bullet the Blue Sky" a big plane flew over at dusk and the sun reflected off the belly of the plane. It was just an incredible moment that I still remember. This has been such a fun thread!

Agree with Puttin' on the Ritz - terrible song. And Don't Worry be Happy isn't great. Otherwise, not even close to top 10 worst songs. In fact, some of them I even really like though they were way overplayed at the time.

I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany, just so many bum notes in that vocal performance it's embarrassing.
Walk This Way - Run DMC. Steve Tyler, blergh! Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder. I've Never Been to Me - Charlene. Come Dancing - The Kinks.
For me the 80s had some awful music.
See, now this song brings me right back to roller skating rinks, skating round and round with my hair flying behind me. Thanks for bringing up that memory and putting a smile on my face!

i think it's all about what is your vibe. i liked pop music and alternative and while none of those were my faves, and i whole heartedly agree were overplayed..... but anything but def leppard, most songs by rush and anything with david lee roth's voice would be my top ten. *shudder* Gasp! Are you dissing on Def Leppard??!! And Rush (what kind of Canadian are you?!)?! I'm actually only medium-fond of Rush, but feel the need to defend them for patriotic reasons. But Def Leppard? I am speechless with horror.

I agree with that list, but then I graduated high school in 1978 so the music of my teens and what I remember most and loved at the time was classic rock. I still love it-Van Halen, and the other bands like this.
Even though I was in college during the 80's I hated the music and the fashion. In the 80's I was listening to Al Stewart-he was my favorite then, a singer/song writer best know for his hit "Year of the Cat" but his music was so much more than that. He considered himself an amatuer historian, and one thing I loved about his songs was that they told stories-it wasn't just the popular "I love you, she loves him" stuff I'd hear on the radio. I still prefer the 1970's and consider it "my decade".
As far as music goes I know what I like. These days it's Marillion (my all time favorite band) and Tori Amos. Their music is complex (especially Marillion's) and I really love their lyrics. Tori-I just loved her music from the first time I heard her sing. She has an incredible voice, plays her instrument (the piano) like she was born to it and also write amazing lyrics. When she was 5 years old she won a scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore!
I love music. It means so much to me-I don't think I could live without it.

I like some of the songs on the original Rolling Stones list, but definitely agree that others belong there.
Mostly, I wanted to add to those that are listing to Sirius XM "80s on 8" station: have you tried First Wave ("1st Wave")? They also play a lot of 80s music, but not quite so much pop/mainstream 80s, and it's a wider selection of 80s tunes. I like 1st Wave a lot better than 80s on 8...just saying.

I love 80s music, and I love most of what has been mentioned here that people hate. I have a few 80s cds that I always listen to on road trips that make me smile. One I didn't see mentioned is Sinead O'Connor, Nothing compares to u. Not sure why, but I have never liked that song.
