I heard this phrase recently and it really has given me a lot to consider. Think about how little sitting our grandparents and previous generations did. It is not so much about exercise as it is about movement. I am making a much more conscious effort to limit the extended periods of time my body is not in motion. Our bodies are paying a very dear price for our sedentary lifestyles. www.startstanding.org/sitting-new-smoking/#extended

My Grandpa lived to be just over 100. In his early 90s he had his first medical issue, first time in the hospital, the put a pacemaker in a 92 year old man because he was strong and healthy otherwise. He still had his camper and boat which he would load on top of the car himself! He'd snow blow the sidewalk for his whole block.
During his last winter he walked down the block every day. I was there one day and the windchill was so cold and he didn't have the fancy winter coats us young people wear. I told him it's so cold don't go out today. He said "you stop moving, you die." Active active active.

I've not heard that phrase but it makes sense. My FitBit is badgering me to move every hour. I ignore it too often.

Covid had really exacerbated this problem. I have several family members who were extremely diligent with covid protocols - unfortunately that meant some of the regular daily movement at grocery stores etc also disappeared. 18 months of sitting at home was extremely detrimental to their overall health.

I've not heard that phrase but it makes sense. My FitBit is badgering me to move every hour. I ignore it too often. My Apple watch nags me also... And if I'm in the middle of something I will often just pump my arm up and down until I get that hour's move point. Which defeats the whole purpose. I need to set a goal of actually standing up and moving every hour, not cheating.

100% agree. I posted recently I just got a Fitbit and I’m waking every hour for five mins. Minimally. My gramma lived to 99, walking all over with her little metal shopping basket on wheels. My friend does 7000-10000 steps/day in her apartment. No excuses for any of us.

I believe this. I used to follow this doctor who was a huge advocate of simply MOVING to lose weight, not just based on exercise. He said that years/decades ago, no one exercised/ran/etc to keep in shape, they just didn't sit around. A couple of years ago, my boss's mom, in her mid 70s, was really sick and in the hospital for almost two months because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. When she went home, her husband took a leave from his job because she really couldn't be left alone. He was close to 80 and still worked everyday (owns a financial planning business) and within a few months, he had lost close to 30 pounds. The only thing different in his life was he wasn't sitting at his desk all day. He was doing things around the house, taking his wife to appointments, etc. That was very eye-opening for me.

I’m always amazed at just how much time people spend sitting on their asses. Desk job is one thing, but then to go home and drop on the couch and stay there? No wonder we have an obesity problem.

I heard that news recently and it actually shocked me. I know sitting a lot isn’t good but as bad as smoking is? Wow! I sit way too much, especially as the weather turns cold. I just want to be cozy under a blanket with a book. I need to change that somehow.

It is... I putter a lot, but also do too much sitting when I'm not cleaning the house... DH works at home, and goes from his desk to the chair in the living room until bedtime "but I walked all the way upstairs to use the bathroom!" and for some reason his Applewatch says he moves more than I do. I think his is counting typing on the computer as exercise... Mine defintely does not I've been going to a lot of high school cross country meets and if you want to feel old and lazy amd motivated to get up and start moving watch some high schoolers run 3 miles. I think I need a lifestyle change...

I need to be better about this. My job keeps me moving, but in the evening, once I sit down, I’m down for the count. If I keep moving when I get home (make dinner, pick up house, walk dogs) I do better. But once I stop moving I can’t seem to get started again.
Weekends? Lol. Couch time except for a trip to the gym. My hobbies are also done sitting down. Bad news.
Now that the weather is slightly less awful, I want to start working in the yard on weekends. We have dreams of converting our yard to mostly native, low/no water plants.

My grandma's hand powered washing machine with wringer? That's a workout. Carrying laundry downstairs and pushing a button does not compare.

When I did retail when I was younger I was very thin because I was always moving. Also I was younger. Lol. Now I sit all day at work. However, in the past two + years my hobbies have really changed and they are all active related and that’s made a huge difference. When I worked at the office I had a sit/stand desk and that was better than straight sitting as I’d make a point to stand most of the morning. But with telework I just sit at work.

Who lives longer, a hare or a tortoise? 😜
I don't sit around a lot if I can help it. I like to be active. But in the end you have to watch what you eat or all the activity in the world won't help. You can't out-exercise a bad diet (well, you can, but most of us don't have that kind of time).

Even a skinny person needs to not sit around so much.

Carrying laundry downstairs and pushing a button does not compare. when i was a kid visiting my aunt who live overseas, i watched her wash her entire family's clothes and bedding by hand. she scrubbed them, rinsed and wrung them out, and hung them up. she also always walked to the store and she was always sweeping up. now that woman was fit. her arms and legs were muscular.

I'm not surprised to hear this.
It is startling how little you move your body in a day as you efficiently move from house to car to office, etc.

I took a part time job in a store for that very reason. The pay is lousy, and the expectations are ridiculous, but there is a lot of moving, and that was my goal. I realized that I was doing entirely too much sitting.

It's even worse for me now that I've been working from home for the last 18 months. At least when I was working in the city I would get a bit of exercise walking from the station to my office and back the other way after work. I always made sure I walked the three flights of stairs at the train station, instead of using the escalator. But now my only exercise during the day is walking the 20 steps from my bedroom to my study! Plus a half hour walk for the dog at lunchtime.
I had a sit/stand desk at the office, but I don't have one at home. The only time I get up off my arse is to get a coffee or go to the toilet.
Thanks for sharing the article. I'm going to make a more concerted effort to move more during the day.

My Grandpa lived to be just over 100. Mine lived to be 94. Never owned or drove a car, he walked everywhere in his small town. His small house was on a hillside and he mowed the grass with a push mower until he was 92. I average 12,000 - 14,000 steps a day on my Fitbit. It has helped regulate my blood sugar.

I work in the mall at a job the pay is the worst, the people are mad at me and I walk 10,000-12,000 steps 3-4x week and then on my days off it is only 5000 steps and I am good with that. I walk Dante 5x day anyway.

Also I have really geeky (black) New Balance running shoes which absorb a lot of shock. They are quite comfortable. My feet can still walk more today when I take animal out at 6

After I got my Fitbit, I was SHOCKED the first time we went to visit my parents in the suburbs - by dinnertime, I had about 700 steps! On a normal work day, I get ten times that without any effort at all. Part of it, of course, was that I was on vacation, but a lot of it was that my day-to-day life as a car-less person in the city just involves many more steps. I do have to be mindful about it if I want to exceed 10,000 steps every day, but it's not too hard. The Fitbit has been a real eye opener for me.

I’m also realizing I need a lot of stuff to do or I’ll get bored - so urban is more and more appealing. Though I also need lots of outdoor recreation so the search is on.

I only work very part time and I am at home a lot...I am aware that I need to move more but when I think of it I sort of don't know what to do. I stand up, can't think of a particular activity and sit down again I need to change that!

I stand up, can't think of a particular activity and sit down again I need to change that! I have started just doing a lap or two of our apartment each time my Apple watch nags me to stand up. It's not a lot, but it breaks up me sitting on the sofa and knitting for over an hour at a time. Probably also good for my hands to give them a break each hour too.
