I've only been to one drag show (just before COVID hit), but it was so much fun. The 'Divas' circulated the restaurant, singing and dancing. We enjoyed excellent cocktails (I had a "Porn Star" martini) and a tasty dinner. I'd love to go again, and to some shows with different formats. Did you go to the Kit Kat Lounge?! That place is super fun! My bachelorette party was at a drag show. I think they're super fun, but not everything is for everyone. If it's not for you, OP, that's cool. Your friend should chill (but they probably know how dang fun they are and don't want you to miss out)! It was the Kit Kat! Great place. Loved the entertainment and the creative drink menu. I’d like to see a full-stage show sometime, though.

Also, clue me in if I’m wrong, but drag does not equal gay. Not 100% but still fairly close There are a few straight men, but it's rare (I've watched just about every season of every Drag Race show in every country and so far only 2 have identified as heterosexual) and no-one I know in real life, some transgender women and some cis women but they are definitely in the minority currently, but I expect it will increase in the years to come.

Drag is not my cup of tea. But my mom attended drag shows in San Francisco in the early 1950s. She talked about how talented the performers were. She said that sometime during the evening she would forgot the performers were men in drag and was always shocked when they took their wigs off at the end of the night.
I miss my mom.

If you like singing along to the likes of ABBA and Cher and appreciate bawdy humour you may actually enjoy drag. If racy jokes aren’t your thing then it’s not for you. It’s pure entertainment but obviously not everyone enjoys the same types of entertainment.
I’ve gone to both shows and bingos and always have a great time. My last show was my first night in Australia. After flying 1/2 way around the world, on about 2 hours of airplane “sleep”, I was “lucky” enough to be chosen from the audience (because my group shared that I was visiting from Canada) to join the queens in lip synching Dancing Queen” - definitely a night I won’tforget!

Maybe what I am missing is the entertainment portion. To me it seemed like it was basically a modeling show. But it sounds like there is more to it than that. Some drag shows here in LA have queens dancing and singing and performing rather then model. They put on whole shows.

While we were standing in line to get into the show there were two married couples standing near us. The men were grumbling because evidently their wives had talked them into seeing the show and they were not too keen on it. They seated the couples in the row in front of us.
The husbands started getting into the show and were really enjoying themselves. The star of the show was absolutely beautiful and so talented. Great singer, dancer and impersonator. One of the husbands started REALLY getting into the star. His wife finally said, Harold, you do realize that is a man? He stopped, thought about it and realized he had totally forgotten. Then after a few minutes he went right back to clapping and talking about how gorgeous the star was. We laughed our asses off. As we were walking out of the show he was still talking about what a great performance it was.

My daughter's best friend is a drag queen in NYC. He's amazing - hilarious, gorgeous and incredibly talented. I agree with most everyone else - if it's not your thing, don't bother. But it sounds like you may have the wrong idea about what goes on and what they're about. Google and watch some YouTube videos - I believe it's much more entertaining than you think. Or even rent/stream Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. (One of my favorite movies simply for the drag performances) It has Guy Pearce (most recently from Mare of Easttown) and Hugo Weaving (best known as Elrond in Lord of the Rings) and some amazing costumes (won the Oscar for best costumes that year) and performances. Yes! One of my all time favorite movies.

I will always, always recommend watching Paris Is Burning to learn more about drag and the ballroom scene. It's an important film!
I've only been to a few drag shows so far but they are a blast. The first one I went to was a concert - I saw Adore Delano when her first album had just come out. That's not the type of drag show that everyone's talking about but still was a drag performer doing her thing! A few years ago I went to Roscoe's while I was in Chicago and ended up watching Shea Coulee lip synch to Iggy Azalea's new song (at the time) which was how Iggy premiered the track. That was pretty cool. There were other queens performing as well, but to those who are Rupaul's Drag Race fans, you'll know what a big deal Shea is! To see her in a small bar in her hometown was really cool. The most recent one I went to was a show my friend did, it's a one-queen play that's based on autobiographical events. It has poetry, story telling, lip synching... it was great.
Also, if you go to a show, always remember - TIP YOUR QUEENS!
