I am starting with the hardest of my challenges first, so that you have more time for making it if you need. If you have never made a box card before, your challenge is to make one. They aren’t that hard, and they are fun to make as well as to receive. They can be as simple or elaborate as you like. See the photo samples below. If you have made one or more box cards before, then the challenge is to go “outside the box” for this box card challenge: Make a shaped box card, where the box card structure is hidden behind a shaped, large die cut. I’ll be updating this post before the end of the day with a tutorial for this one, as well as a beginner’s tutorial for those who have never made a box card before. A shaped box card is easier than you might expect. This is the one I made: Here is the link to the tutorial:Shaped Box Card TutorialThe TWIST is to make an envelope to go with your box card, from patterned paper. I used a thin paper that I found on clearance at Tuesday Morning. It’s a good way to use the thinner papers. You’ll just have to use Avery labels if you want to mail it. You’re on your honor as to whether or not you make a shaped card along the lines of the one above, or a traditional box card more like this one (made with my Silhouette Cameo and print & cut files): For those who are doing a box card for the first time, especially those who don’t have an electronic cutter and box card cutting files, and/or specialty box card dies, the beginner’s tutorial will be for a very basic one like the one below. It doesn’t require any special tools other than a scoring board and scoring tool, paper trimmer or scissors, and a ruler (mine was decorated with Graphic 45 papers). It will have the shape of the one below, but you can decorate it however you like, as well as adapt it. Here is the tutorial for the simple, basic version:Easy Pop Up Box Card TutorialBox cards are my favorite card to make. I hope you’ll have fun with this one!

scrapnnana, your box cards are GORGEOUS!!! Thank you for sharing the luscious photos! And I love the twist to do the envelope. It took me all month last year to create my first ever box card. Hoping I can get THIS one done before Halloween!

Thank you, grammadee and azcrafty ! I have edited my original post to include links to the Shaped Box Card tutorial, as well as the one geared toward beginner box card makers who don’t have specialty box card dies or electronic cutters. For what it’s worth, though, I think just about anyone could do the shaped box card. Have fun! I’ll look forward to seeing everyone’s creations!

I love box cards too. I make them using the Cricut-they have tons of ready to make designs. I also like SVG cuts. And with a basic design it’s also a great way to use up old stickers and stuff!

Before I got my Silhouette I learned to make a box card with scoreboard and taught my 9 year old granddaughter. She wanted to enter the 4HDemonstration Contest and decided to teach the judges how to make a box card. She made about 20 different ones for table decorations and samples and did a great job on the Demo. She even won the trophy. They are easier than they look. Thanks scrapnnana for the challenge.

I made my first box card due to your challenge last year, scrapnnana! Thank you for continuously pushing us. For the shaped box card, is it possible to do with out a cricut?

You could probably use a large die or even trace and cut out a shape. Your card is great, scrapnnana ! Thanks for getting us off to a good start.

I made my first box card due to your challenge last year, scrapnnana ! Thank you for continuously pushing us. For the shaped box card, is it possible to do with out a cricut? I didn’t use an electronic cutter for any part of the pumpkin shaped box card. I used a large shaker card die from Queen & Company, but the box structure hidden inside was made with a scoring board, paper trimmer, and a bone folder. I added the tutorial to my orginal post at the top, so you can see exactly how I made it. If your dies are smaller, you might need to make the box structure smaller to fit a shaped die that you already have on hand.

well scrapnnana - you've certainly challenged me to try new things. The tutorial was helpful. I made a practise card to figure it all out and then made an actual card. Neither is perfect but I'm quite pleased with the Haunted House card and DH has put it on display in his hobby room along with the box card I made for last Cardtober. I haven't the first idea how to make an envelope though so no twist for me. practise card - used dies and my Gemini Jr for this one Final card - use a variety of cut files and my Cricut for this one I don't have a score board but I figure out how to use my paper trimmer to measure and then run a score tool (from Dollar Tree) down the groove to score.

I haven't the first idea how to make an envelope though so no twist for me. For those who don’t have an envelope punch board or envelope templates, IF you want to do the twist, carefully take apart an envelope the right size (hopefully you have one in your stash), and trace around the edges. Also, I know that Silhouette has envelope cutting files. Perhaps Cricut does, too? The nice thing about using cutting files is that you can cut them large enough to fit an atypical card. My pumpkin box card was definitely an odd size, but I was able to use my envelope punch board for it.

Here's mine. I'm making a batch of cards to go to a local senior care home. There is a bottom on these so that some sort of treat can be dropped into them. IMG_0636 by CLAUDIA LOVELESS, on Flickr

Wow, we already have some awesome inspiration here! Box cards are a bit fiddly at first but they are very impressive and look much harder than they actually are. I have some ghosts who might need to go on one. A tip on mailing patterned paper envelopes: another option (if you have single sided paper) is to fold them so the white side is facing out and keep the pattern on the inside the recipient still gets a nice surprise but they're easy to address without using a label. I like to do that with my less beautiful papers.

linda wow, both cards are so good! The haunted one will make a great decoration this season. gramma your chickens are adorable, and a good pun based message is always welcome. Your recipients will love them. scrapnnana thanks for the challenging challenge! I still have my box card from last year on display. It's fall themed but it has been on display all year. Your examples are so lovely. Thanks for encouraging us. I got determined to do a sleigh. I unwrapped my deep cut blade for the Cricut for the first time, and also used the inset function (offset with a negative number entered). If I had to do it over I would cut two more sleigh images in red and line the insides. Live and learn....

linda what a great idea to use a house...love it, I will have to put it in my inspiration album. gramma ..the 🐔 so cute! jjpeapea just Wow! Love the sleigh and all the holiday sentiments. Here is mine, I used a treat box die, I cut it out 3 times and glued them together the card won't stand up so I made a little foldable box as a stand. Coordinating pp to make the envelope, I used my envelope maker punch board. CARDtober 2021 by Azcrafty, on Flickr

scrapnnana , your box cards are simply incredible. I really appreciate the link to the box card instructions. I decided to try your method and it’s so much easier than the way I have always made them. Thank you so much for this challenge. Your cards are always perfection. Linda , what a cute Valentine card and your haunted house is amazing. I am so glad you were able to make it work with what you had. I used to use my cutter for a scoreboard too. Ingenuity is just part of this wonderful hobby we share. gramma , I love, love, love your chickens! There is love in the gallery. jjpeapea , your sleigh was such a great idea. I love the words popping out from behind. It is really delicate and beautiful. I love the design. Your double-sided envelope is perfect! I love the scallops. azcrafty , you went all out. Love every detail. There is love in the gallery. iowagirl50147 , I love those stacked teacups. Stacked teacups always makes me think of the fun we have had over the years with our Cousin Camp tea parties. Did you design those cups yourself? They are so bright and fun. I love that it’s a slimline card. I may steal your design for our Cousin Camp invitations next summer. So cute. Here is mine. I used the pot cut file from a Pot of Gold I used on a scrapbook page and made the box between 2 pots. Being left-handed and a bit backward, I did it backward and had to pull out my fillers and turn them toward the front. LOL. I used my Cameo to print and cut the little witch and hunted through my files until I found some other Halloween-y things. To make the bats stay in the air I backed them with a piece of clear acetate packaging from my paper trimmer. I was glad I had it squirreled away. Cardtober #1 Halloween Box Card by [
