DD15 doesn't tolerate artificial sweeteners. She's in a high adventure Girl Scout troop that is preparing for a boundary waters canoe trip next year. And one of the things they did today was try different water purification techniques and different flavourings/mix-ins for the water. Almost everything seems to have artificial sweeteners - and the one we (and the troop leaders) found that doesn't, also doesn't have salt/sodium which is a concern for hydration (TrueLemon)
Any ideas on something that will work - it has to be a powder/concentrate for backpacking and canoeing due to limited space/weight in her pack.

My husband is very sensitive to artificial sweeteners as well, and he uses flavor packets with Stevia without issue. He found them at wal-mart. I think propel vitamin boost might fit your criteria too - says flavored with organic cane sugar and stevia.

drink straight water.. even if it doesn't taste that good. I would assume that iodine would be a backup method.. but even with that, you can get tablets that make it not taste too bad after 30 min. otherwise, filter, purify and just drink it.

My neighbor puts a couple of spoons of Jell-O powder into her water because she can't stand plain water. She says the gelatin is good for you adding some protein, amino acids, and collagen to the water. She buys the regular type with sugar in it. She swears that her knees stopped hurting her when she started doing this. I know many people take collagen pills as a supplement so I guess there must be some truth to her thinking her Jell-O is helping her joints.
I drink a LOT of water every day and all I have ever added is ice. Most sugar substitutes bother me too.

I was just coming on to recommend these. They have some dextrose (sugar) and stevia. They are a tablet that you drop into your drink and let it dissolve. available at Whole Foods and Amazon.

A couple more options for you. DH currently uses SFuels for his triathlon training, here are the ingredients.
He has also used Liquid IV mentioned above and Skratch, the Sports Mix. Here is what the website says about their products suitability for children

www.ultimareplenisher.com/This is the one I use. They make containers with scoops and individual serving sticks, which would come in handy on a canoe trip. Raspberry and grape are my favorite. Blue raspberry is gross. Zero calories, carbs, sugar. Gluten free and vegan.

Bonk Breaker Real Hydration lemon lime is the one my house likes the best. When we needed my mom to get better fluids into her this was the only one she would drink.

In general that's what she does - I think the concern for this particular trip is dehydration - not just drinking enough water but also replenishing electrolytes (they are doing a weeklong canoe trip in the summer) - flavouring is a plus but not essential

I suffer from dehydration regularly and when I had a tube my docs had me doing a lot of pedialyte. I would ask her pediatrician's office what they recommend for her. You want her to have the electrolytes and minerals in a drink that tastes good to her.

Thanks everyone - lots of ideas to check out. Day to day - she drinks plain water with or without ice but for a weeklong summertime canoe trip in the boundary waters...she'll need electroyltes as well.

I'm old. we used to do those sorts of trips and of course, our only choices were plain water or sugar drink flavoring. so we went to plain water. and did just fine. I did a five day canoe trip around mercer island and lake washington in seattle when I was that age..

I've bought the pedialyte and then had a very hard time even having a small glass of it. It tasted gross to me. I probably actually needed an IV of fluids.

When my electrolytes are out of whack I get really weird cramps. In my ribs, along my chin, places that are really hard to stretch out. They feel totally different than normal low magnesium cramps which I also get regularly.
I found both liquidIV and Nuun to work really well to get me going again.

ETA and totally off topic: The most fun I had as a late teen/young adult was on canoe trips with my friends. We did seven days on Harrison Lake in BC and five days on Lake Ozette on the Olympic Peninsula. I was also the trip counselor at summer camp and took teens on a four day trip on Ross Lake in WA and BC. Best memories!

Whatever you decide to try, I suggest buying smaller packages to test out. I bought Liquid IV from Costco because so many recommended it. It made my daughter throw up, my husband and son had terrible stomach cramps and it left a terrible taste in my mouth. Huge waste for us.

I’m a distance runner and all I drink is plain water, BUT I do take Salt Stick capsules to replace electrolytes. (I also use GU energy gels and Clif Blok chews, but she may not want to carry those). The salt stick capsules are small and easy to carry if your daughter wants to try something different. saltstick.comI also have friends that use Nuun and Skratch with good results. They like Tailwind, too. Sounds like a great trip, I hope she has a blast!

My ND recommended that I add a squirt of lemon and a dash of pink Himalayan sea salt to plain water. I’ve been doing that for 4 weeks (I mostly drink water all day with a large cup of decaf in the morning and one cup of herbal tea later in the day) and I do notice a difference. I’m not as thirsty (blood sugar is fine, but I was always thirsty) and it just seems to quench my thirst better than straight water.

You need to keep in mind that none of these replacement products have the same level of electrolytes as blood so it’s possible to overdo it The way people chug water these days over hydration and hyponatremia is more of a risk than dehydration. I know I’ll get blasted for this and I’m not saying don’t look for a solution and encourage her to drink but know that it’s possible to overdo it.
