We are taking a break from the nail salon - can you recommend a good nail polish. I am assuming they are not all created equal.

All of my polish is from Zoya. I generally can go three or four days before I have to do a little touching up. I did my nails the day I broke my left wrist. I ended up with an above the elbow splint for a week. My polish on my left hand was perfect that entire week.

I've been using color street strips. When ever I use real polish, i always dink it up within minutes. CS is real nail polish, and i add a top clear coat on it, and they will last quite a while. I can typically get 3 manicures from a set, which are about $11 &s&h (and you have to order from a consultant).
I have also used Lilyandfox.com nail strips. They feel a little more plastic-y, but they are $2.99 a set plus free shipping and have TONS of choices. I also put a clear coat on them.
Both nailstrips can be removed with just regular nail polish remover.

I have great luck with Essie when I use their gel couture topcoat (the one in the white twisted bottle). That stuff is amazing. Super shiny, dries so quickly.

I like the brand Color Club which I get on amazon. I bought a few glittery, holographic colors and it goes no like no other polish. It's smooth and opaque and lasts for quite a while. They do have other colors other than holographic, but the holo ones are awesome if you like that kinda thing! link

Olive and June. Let me say again, OLIVE AND JUNE!!! You put the polish on. Put the clear coat on. Done. 3-4 days later, add another coat of clear coat. I have had a manicure last 14 days with no chips. I did the $30 year membership so I get free shipping and a small discount. I am wearing one of the new fall set colors now. The prettiest dusty navy blue. It was a quickly done manicure late Sunday night so I have a big chunk on one nail. I also didn't get a good top coat on. But for what I have been through this week, they look pretty darn good.

I can wear any polish for at least a week as long as I do Seche Vite base coat and top coat. It’s all about the right sandwich.

I only use Zoya. I use their naked base and naked seal with it, and can easily get a week or ten days, and most of the time I end up repainting because I have gaps along my cuticles from growth or I want to change the color, not chipping. I don’t get shrinkage with these like I did with Seche Vite (the worst!) and Glisten & Glow (better, but still not as good.)

I’m really liking Olive & June polishes, paired with their Top Coat, right now. I’m getting 4-5 days out of my manicures. Essie comes in 2nd place. Zoya in 3rd.
I love OPI’s color selection, but their polish doesn’t last more than a day or so on me.

I ordered color street, but it wreaks like strong nail polish in the box. Will the smell go away once applied?

The key for me is applying top coat every so often for awhile and wearing thin vinyl gloves while fixing meals and heavy gloves while washing dishes every single time.
I also like Olive and June.

I have been using Color Street for 2 years now. No matter how careful and patient I was when using regular polish, I would always end up with a smudges. Color Street solved that for me! It does take a little bit of practice the first couple times, but I love it.

Don’t forget to prep your nails before putting the polish on too- if it’s oily with hand cream, soap residue or whatever it won’t adhere properly. Wipe over with polish remover first. Also capping the free edge with your top coat helps.

My only problem with them is the lack of color variety. I JUST found the Essie polish here in Morocco. It is actually the best I have ever used. No lie...I can easily go 5 days without a single chip and my nails still look like fresh. I do use the Essie Strong Start, then I do two coats and finish off with the Gel Setter top coat. I totally agree with myshelly that the right "sandwich" is key. Also, excellent advice from @gar that the prep is equally important. I am pretty meticulous about how I file (only one direction and rounded) my nails. I push back my cuticles and gently trim. I wash my hands well before I put on the polish. Funny this thread came up today because I have been meaning to throw out old polish and restock with only Essie....which I just did today. Lots of color choices.

If I don't do that, they can chip, depending on what I am doing. Yes but now I am trying a different top coat I bought that has GREAT reviews. I have also ordered their base coat but don't have it yet. So far, this top coat is shinier and dries REALLY fast. I hope this will do the trick. Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat

It does take a little bit of practice the first couple times, but I love it. I agree it does smell like nail polish when you open the package, but once i apply the strips, I think the smell goes away pretty quickly. The nails can be dinged or marred if you wash dishes or hit your nail on something really hard - i try to be done for the night with my activities so i can apply the strips and then put a top coat on and not bang around my hands too much. I do feel the strips are a little bit... vulnerable? when first applied. and of course the top coat is polish and can get messed up. but the strips are a lot more set and are nothing like polish from a bottle. I really do love them tho. I do seal the package the strips come in back up with a hair straightener - tape or a ziplock was just not cutting it, so the strips would be dried out when i went back for round 2. I just seal the packages and reseal/melt the plastic with the hair straightener.

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail CoatThat stuff is great!! When I was a hardcore manicure person, I used the Seche Vite for bottom and top coats. Per Shimelle. People kept asking her how her manicures always looked so fresh in her videos. She said the secret was that. Bottom coat, while wet apply nail color to bottom coat. Same then to the top coat to polish. Never to let the bottom coat of whatever dry. That stuck in my brain.

I use OP brand polish. I apply a coat of "no chip" on the nails before I polish. I do a clear overcoat..........and I still have it get a chip within 12 hours of new polish.
The only thing I do that works is to use gel polish....and then it lasts forever.
I no longer get the salon to remove the gel. I have a matching color in regular polish. I let the gel stay on as my nails grow out. I paint the new nail bed with the matching regular type polish until my nails have grown enough for the gel to be cut off when the nails are trimmed.

Yes I quit gel because of that grinding they insist on doing.

I don't like ordering online because colors look different online than in person. I hear good reviews about this nail polish. I want to get the top coat if you can use it on other nail polish. I may have to order one and see how I like it!

I agree on Target. Wished they carried more.

Out The Door topcoat is the key. Use any decent polish and finish with Out The Door and it's all good.

I like Olive and June top coat and drying drops. I don’t care for the polish, though. I need to try more colors but the two I have chip pretty quickly.
The longest lasting for me are OPI and KB Shimmer.

maryland, I do not like the Olive and June top coat. Reading about it, it sounds wonderful but in reality, I think it's much worse than other top coats. I will say the one I linked above is AMAZING!!! It feels like no other top coat I have ever used. I keep rubbing my fingers over my nails (weird I know but it feels so awesome). I don't think my nail polish is going to chip now. And it's so glossy. I love it. I think this is going to be key to no chipping--this great top coat.
