Let's say for 2 tickets, a large popcorn and two medium drinks? Our cost would be $14 for that combination. HHAAAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAAAHHA Sorry. It's just that $14!! At my theatre a large popcorn/2 medium soda combo is $20. So you paid less for your entire evening than I pay for my snacks. Which is one of the main reasons I'll wait and purchase the BluRay. Oh, tickets are $10.50 each. $9.50 if you go to the mantinee.

That's super cheap! Tickets here are $10.00 or $10.50, unless you go on Wednesday then they are $5.
We go to the Cheap theater that plays movies right when they are coming out on DVD. It's $3 a ticket there and only $1.75 on Tuesdays.

I just checked our ticket prices for Mockingjay...$10.15 for the 12:50pm show and $12.08 for the 7:30pm show. I don't even pay attention to popcorn/soda prices anymore...but $5.50 for a drink sounds about right. We have to get multiple popcorns because DH doesn't like butter.
I do know that for our family of 5 to go to a movie will set us back about $100

Wow! Those are great prices!
To go see that same movie, in the evening would be $9.00 for one adult ticket here.
Candy is $4.50 or $5.00. So is a small popcorn or small drink.

I'm not even sure how a theater can pay their box office dues on that amount of $$, especially on a new release. Tickets here are 9.50. A large popcorn $6.00 and a bottle of water is $2.98 That's what I paid Sat Night. I was thinking the same thing. I took a media class in college and he went over the breakdown on theater costs. Theaters can't even break even on ticket costs alone. That's why concession mark-ups are so high; that's the only way they can make any profit. Either that theater has some crazy secret formula going on or it's not long for this world. Whatever the case, enjoy while you can because I live in Ohio, not all that far from you and there is NOTHING like that around here. In fact, my friend was shocked when we went to see This is Where I Leave You (which has been out for quite a while) at our second run theater and tickets were only $2. But sometimes they get movies when they have hit or almost hit DVD. I will say that my husband and I went to see a movie on a Tuesday night (something we never do) and I was amazed at the bargains you can get on weeknights. We spent twenty dollars total on our two tickets (non-matinee) and a large popcorn and large soft drink to split. I thought that was pretty crazy. But who wants to see movies on Tuesday nights normally? Not me!

We always go the shows before noon so they are only $6.50/ticket. Otherwise they are about $12/ticket. I rarely buy snacks/drinks there.

The regular price for movie tickets (non matinee or discount days) is $11.50. I HATE to spend money on concessions. I can eat a decent meal in a restaurant for what it costs to purchase concessions.
There is a small locally owned beautiful refurbished movie house that we like to go to. They show movies about 4-6 weeks after their initial release dates. My husband and I can see an evening movie, get popcorn that is made fresh onsite, and a beverage for $20.00. It is a really good deal!

We are fortunate to have a small family owned theater in our town. Tickets are $6, $4 for matinee. Large popcorn is $6 and large drink $5. You get a free refill with a large. Candy is $2-3. Bottled soda or water is $2.50. I usually go to the 4:00 or 5:00 matinee, bring in candy, and buy a large popcorn to share. We buy drinks there. Usually it's just me and ds. Not too bad here.

We have military ID so it's only $8, same as matinee price. I think reg price is $10.50. We usually get a tub/large popcorn that we can refill once and 1 large drink (unlimited refills) for $14. If our two kids are with us we will share the popcorn but get the combo that comes with 2 drinks I think that's a couple dollars more. We sometimes get candy and bring it in. I don't feel too bad about that since I'm buying the other stuff. They've seen my candy before and haven't ever said anything either, they don't have any signs posted that you can't bring in food.

We also have a wonderful cheap theater near us. I happily drive the 30 minutes to get there because it is so great. Saturday night for Mockingjay I paid $17 for 2 tickets, 2 med popcorn, and 2 med drinks.

prices sure vary, most likely depending on the section of the US you live in.
we live in a very film=oriented city and area. (Bay Area, northern CA) and the prices are pretty high.
there are no theaters that allow outside food brought in, except for one that will allow a coffee drink because they don't sell them.
we love to go to the big screen but it's just DH and I so we will also buy something like a small popcorn and a water.
when our grandson gets older we will take him to some very carefully chosen movies (he's 4 now, and he's only been to the theater one time)
it's wonderful to be in a live audience!
DH and I saw the Steven Hawking film the other day. Matinee was packed on a weekday!

The theater we like to go to is on the cheaper end its seems. Two tickets, large popcorn & two medium drinks would be $24. Tickets are $6 and large popcorn with 2 drinks combo is $12. Both drinks AND popcorn are refillable. Not as cheap as StephDRebel, but not too bad.

I saw a couple of people talking about movies and ticket costs...now i'm curious. How much does it cost to take your family to the movies? I don't know how we lucked out but we've got a great (super cheap apparently) theater around here so it's really a reasonable night out. We saw Mockingjay last night, my husband and I, our boys and then a friend, we ended up paying- Movie ticket- $4 each (regular price, no matinees at this place) Sodas- $2 large, $1.50 medium, $1 small Popcorn- $3 large, $2 medium, $1 small Tenderloin sandwich- $3.50 French Fries- $2 Large Pizza- $5 hot dogs- $1 (with cheese, relish, ketchup, mustard) Movie Candy- $2 each. I don't remember what combo of popcorn & drinks they had. I know we had a pizza, tenderloin, 2 hot dogs and fries and then 3 popcorns and 3 drinks and we got out of there with tickets included for less than $50. It's been forever since we've gone to another theater without a groupon...what is normal cost for you? Let's say for 2 tickets, a large popcorn and two medium drinks? Our cost would be $14 for that combination. I bought a two adult, two medium drink, small popcorn thing at Costco for $24.99 then we were charged $0.83 for butter. Lol. I can't afford to take a family to a new release. Old movies (already released to DVD, are $5.00 per ticket but everything else is full price, in an old rundown theatre.

Wow OP, you've got a sweet setup going on there! In answer to your question, the 2 tix and lite snacks would run us 45-50 bucks. We usually wait for the DVD these days, and make our own popcorn in the comfort of our home theatre.

The theater we go to locally is one of those restaurant theaters. You can get full meals which many people do, they open the theater an hour early and people eat and then watch the movie.
Regular tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for kids.
Matinee $7
3D extra $1
Sodas- Regular 2.99 Large 3.99 Pitcher 6.49 Popcorn- not sure, price not listed on their site and we rarely get it
French Fries basket - $4.59
The rest of the food, (like the fries which is a large basket) - nachos, burgers, pizza, are restaurant size so comparing prices is hard because for instance the nachos isn't just chips and cheese, it's actual cheese with lettuce and tomato, sour cream and gaucamole; pizza is a full personal pizza instead of a slice.
