Do you still have your old Hero Arts stamps you bought when you first started stamping (long before you had heard of scrapbooking?) I went and looked in my stamp drawer and holy cow there are boxes of HA alphabet stamps. Some got used and some didn't. I couldn't bear to part with them because what if right?
Two Peas had a set of boxed typewriter alphabet ones that I never got. That was eons ago...say 2001? I forget but I totally regret not getting them. They would have been used over and over. I do have some I am sure but these would have been really well loved.
Now I am an acrylic snob. I ordered some SU stuff in the fall last year and I ordered ACRYLIC...my SU rep ordered me red rubber. I just assumed it was acrylic. I even emailed her telling her I wanted acrylic and got red rubber. Ugh. But it's ok. I love the stamps regardless. I just won't use her as my rep again. (It is a long story why I just opened the bag of SU stuff now but that's another story).
I am an acrylic snob. This is true. I like the smell of acrylic stamps. I like positioning them on a plastic block. I love the whole process.

I like the acrylic because I'm totally a novice stamper and it helps me to line up what I'm doing. I've heard though that you get a crisper image with the rubber stamps.

I won't buy acrylic stamps but I love and buy photopolymer. SU stamps are photopolymer not acrylic, I believe.

When I first showed an interest in stamping all that was available was wood mounted stamps but I found it difficult to get a straight and crisp image so I soon gave up on that, enter acrylic and everything changed. I have a couple of stampin up stamps that I keep around but I gave my kids all the wood mounted I had.

I love stamps, of all kinds.
But I'm a wierdo - I like wood mounted rubber stamps best because they look so pretty lined up on a shelf.

I love all stamps but haven't bought wood for quite some time. I don't have the room for them.
I still have some of my first alpha sets stored in bullet cases.

I am still a fan of red rubber. Best of both worlds? Cling-mounted red rubber with the image on the cling so you can line it up exactly! Acrylic/ photopolymer? I will buy these if I love the image, but they will never impress as well.

It does get a little confusing if you aren't familiar with the lines. The choices are wood mount or clear mount. Clear mount means it's red rubber but you mount on a clear, acrylic block. Then the photopolymer stamps. I do think SU! will be expanding this line because it seems to be doing well.

I will buy these if I love the image, but they will never impress as well. There is a really big difference between acrylic and photopolymer. I have never had a problem getting a good impression with photopolymer. With acrylic I have a hard time just getting it to ink up properly never mind the rest. But I do like rubber mounted on an acrylic block so lining things up is a breeze.

Elannah, if you want clear stamps from SU you have to order them that way. SU made it confusing when they went with offering rubber with a cling back. They called them acrylic because they are to go onto an acrylic block.
I would find that forgivable if it wasn't for the fact that there was something entirely different on the market already with that name.
I wonder how many other people were upset when they received rubber cling stamps instead of clear stamps.
So your demo really didn't make a mistake, SU did when they named their product.

I LOVE stamps!
My absolute favourite is red rubber. I prefer the unmounted red rubber the best, but they are harder to find. Just a slab of rubber with the images so I can save the most money and store them the most efficient way is what I crave. I learned to love these from being a member of Club Scrap for years-they always have sheets of red rubber images for sale each month with their kits.
My second favourites are the wood mounted red rubber stamps. Yes, they take up room, but they are like art to me in my scrapbook room. I do have shelves where I display them although I'm rapidly running out of room.
My least favourite is photopolymer-I still like them, but they are 3rd on my list. I don't have as many of these. I don't have any acrylic stamps and try not to buy any (I keep a list in my journal of the companies that make acrylic stamps so I don't get confused).
I guess you could say I'm a red rubber snob. I love the way they smell too!

The stamps are not acrylic. The clear stamps are made of photopolymer. There are various grades of photopolymer...some that is truly pathetic, turns yellow and gets gummy and impossible to use after a short while. The Best grades are generally from the companies who produce their stamps in the US. The blocks they are used with are acrylic blocks. It's a common mistake.
With clear stamps, you have to be aware that certain inks aren't going to give you a quality impression.
Give me red rubber any day of the week. Love the smell and the feel.

I fell for the "acrylic" stamps from SU. Was highly disappointed when I got unmounted rubber meant to go on clear blocks. I won't order stamps from SU again. I'm a CTMH hobbyist demo so am used to true polymer clear stamps. When I first started with them in 2001 we were wood mounted, but within 2-3 years had made the switch to the polymer. I *love* them. I have stamps from CTMH dating 10-11 years that still look and feel like new.

Many clear stamps are made of acrylic - it is a different recipe than is used to make the blocks. And they are all made "off shore", there are no acrylic stamp manufacturers in N. America. If the package does not say photopolymer or made in the USA then the stamp is acrylic. Those who use photopolymer are proud of that fact and use it as a selling point. The rest are acrylic and I don't recommend anyone buy them they are garbage in my opinion. Some of the companies selling acrylic are big well known names. Using off shore acrylic increases their profit margin. My all time favorite stamps are unmounted rubber but I also love my photopolymer.

I love good old fashioned wood mounted red rubber stamps. Clings are a close second but they are just not the same. I love acrylic for being able to see thru them and line up properly. But the image you get with a good wood mount..

Although I only incorporate stamping into scrapping (i.e. am not a cardmaker, stamp or multimedia artist, etc.), I prefer wood-mounted rubber stamps for their fool-proof crisp images & long shelf life. My favorite stamp manufacturer is Catslife Press! I do purchase the occasional clear photopolymer stamp if not available in wood-mounted rubber or a trendy/non-versatile image that's intended for limited use. All stamps & supplies are organized in a flat file (i.e. discontinued PB 5-drawer cabinet), except the $1 clear stamps stored in collectible card sleeves in a 3-ring binder.

I have SU stamps AND ink from probably around 1990 or 1991. I'm still getting my money out of those ink pads. LOL! Sometime around 2008 or so, I went on an un-mounted binge and unmounted most of my rubber stamps, put cling backing on them and store them in CD cases. I did this partly because I thought un-mounted stamps were the next best thing. And I needed the storage space. I wish I hadn't. I think the image is crisper, using a wood mounted rubber stamp.

I think the rubber stamp better than the clear acrylic. But they've always been so expensive being wood mounted. I like it that several companies now have red rubber stamps that are the cling type, just put on a stamp block and stamp away. They're so much cheaper, but still have the great stamping details that I like so much. It's the best of both worlds.

An even better savings as far as red rubber stamps go is to look for something called "unmounted rubber stamps". These are sheets of rubber that come in different sizes 4x6, 5x7, 81/2 x11-it varies by company. Basically it's a sheet of just the rubber images. I much prefer these because of the cost savings and the storage savings, and I got accosted to them because that is the way Club Scrap sells their stamps, and I've been a member for years.
Anyway, lots of companies sell these, you just have to google. So you get a whole set of images in one sheet. What I do is coat a clean pizza box with a solution of Aleene's Tack it Over and Over and Water-1 to 1. I mix it up that way because otherwise it's too sticky. I coat the bottom of the pizza box and let it dry. Then I cut out the images on the rubber sheet of stamps with a set of clean, sharp scissors. Once they are all cut out I lay them face down (image side down) onto the sticky coated bottom-it's dry now so it's just a little tacky. This keeps them from moving all around while I'm trying to glue them.
Next I take a throw away foam brush, dip it into the 1:1 mixture of water and Aleene's Tack it over and over and "paint" the back of the stamps with the glue mixture. I then close the box, and go on to the next set-keeps the cat hair off of them if one of my cats makes it down to my scraproom where they are not allowed to be.
I let them dry overnight although you don't have to. To stamp I just slap it onto an acrylic block and make sure to put a magazine underneath my stamping cardstock for a little "give" and it works great! No need for foam at all!
Storing is even easier and more compact. I keep the index sheet that came with the stamps. I like to put my now sticky stamps on some sort of acetate, but the best and cheapest I've found is a product called "Grafix Dura-lar" the acetate alternative. I buy it in the .005 thickness and in the pack of 81/2 x11 sheets, and clear. Unfortunately this size 81/2 x11 only comes in a pack of 100 sheets but I've found I've gone through it quickly and it's really not that expensive because it is the perfect product. I buy it at http://www.dickblick.com. I then slide that sheet into a sheet protector from an Office store and because you've now made a sandwich where nothing can slide out you can use a regular 3 ring binder or the wonderful Unikeep binders that lock all the way around-although they cost a bit more. I slide the "index sheet" that has all of the images of the stamps in front of the sheet protector.
Because the foam has been completely eliminated storage is much less bulky.

Well, I prefer the photo polymer, and I like the rubber, even though they take up more room.
But I really need to let all the FOAM stamps from 2005 go. Like, yesterday. Why do I still have them?
