Opening ceremony is only 25 days away... It's getting closer and closer! And it'll come with drama, cheap moves, loads of snow, sparkly figure skating costumes, and more.
Consider this your place to exchange on all things related to the Games: resources, freebies shared online, documenting plans, chatting about your must-follow events, etc.
Here's Bing Dwen Dwen, the official mascot, to get us started:

We generally don't watch sports or the Olympics but I downloaded the cards just in case that changes this year. Thanks sleepingbooty!

KP has a mini kit releasing this week on the 15th. Has a stamp set and cards, not sure what else is included.

I have my fingers crossed she'll be releasing elements of it in the digital shop or I'll feel left out. *pouts in European* I think we might get freebies from IACB again. Possibly Wilson Wilson. KP used to have freebies for the Olympics but that was years ago. Anyone else to watch for a free set?

Pandemic + winter weather, come on, what else do you plan on doing? That gif is equal parts creepy and hilarious. Fortunately I'm in California so we don't get actual winter weather where I live (SF Bay Area) although it does get below freezing a couple of times during the winter.

I don't really watch the Olympics anymore. Kind of over it. But I did want to throw out, do you all remember when Shimelle was in the Olympics? Part of the entertainment. I think it was the opening show.

I am pretty sure I have the freebie olympic cards that Kelly Has sent out in a newsletter in the past. Since they were free in the newsletter, it would be ok to share here, right?

KP had the Rio Freebie in 2016, as well as the 2018 freebie. Hooray for saving ALL THE STUFF! The e-mail for the 2018 set said you could share it with friends and the Rio set was part of the Friday Freebies? Maybe? It just says "for personal use only" on the sheet?

Because they were freebies, I don't see how that would be breaking Terms of Use. I wouldn't share the digitals that came with my kits because those were paid for. But anyone could have signed up for the newsletters. Could someone test the below link for me? 2018 Winter Olympics drive.google.com/file/d/1ABroXX777UD7So8NEXAFLELTFTURh64S/view?usp=sharing

I am excited about upcoming games even if we can only watch the highlights, not live reruns with a lot of commercials during the NBC telecast. This year it will be even worse with 13-14 hour difference. I am especially excited about figure skating and hope Kamila Valieva takes gold. I watch the games but do not generally document it as I do not do a PL. My friend in China won one of the Panda mascots stuffed animals at work and it’s very cute. Many coworkers were jealous as pretty much everyone in China is crazy about Panda bears.

I don't really watch the Olympics anymore. Kind of over it. But I did want to throw out, do you all remember when Shimelle was in the Olympics? Part of the entertainment. I think it was the opening show. Yes! It's still on her blog. I'd forgotten about this until you brought it up. Fortunately I'm in California so we don't get actual winter weather where I live (SF Bay Area) although it does get below freezing a couple of times during the winter. *thinking hat on* Ok, how about this: With the winter Olympics, you get to experience winter weather from the comfort of your SF climate... Will Shaun White battle his Covid-19 symptoms and make the US team after all? How will the Canadian figure skating team do with the major selection drama unfolding right now? Has Norway been hiding their male biathletes true form in the World Cup to secure Olympic medals? Can you possibly not love curling when you're watching tipsy and giddy? (The answer is no.) Can anyone in the household accurately-ish predict the final scores during the ice dancing performances? Which is crazier: speed skating or luge/skeleton? And of course, who was best dressed? (A figure skater, obviously.) I am excited about upcoming games even if we can only watch the highlights, not live reruns with a lot of commercials during the NBC telecast. This year it will be even worse with 13-14 hour difference. These time differences will be a mess for many North Americans. So sorry that will be messing with watching the events live. Could someone test the below link for me? Yes, it works perfectly! Thanks so much for "re"-sharing this with everyone, @cumber1137! I loved these KP freebie cards when she released them. Still love them today.

I've locked in my first image for the PL spread about the Beijing OG: France's new rooster emblem that will debut at the events. My guess is that only the French will immediately see the rooster head while any other person would probably just see the Olympic flame.

With a brain that grew up on too many Britcoms my mind goes to an alternate term for rooster anytime I’m trying to figure out the meaning or punchline but I doubt that would be the explanation for it being on France’s Olympic gear 😂

The Gallic rooster (or coq as we say, kid you not #pardonmyFrench ) is France's official national symbol. Like the Tudor rose for England. Traditionally, it's been depicted as a general rooster shape but in preparation of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, it was recently redesigned to fit the new official #TeamFrance slogan: "la victoire en face" (facing victory). Hence the rooster now being seen as looking straight ahead. I think it's a neat redesign to fit in the Olympic flame for Paris 2024 but it's got to look weird to outsiders who were used to seeing a little bird shape.

Thought I'd share this lovely little documentary about the unique situation at the Ice Academy in Montréal where the best ice dancer pairs in the world compete together daily and have for years. The next golden medal is very likely one of these couples. For anyone looking for an artistic and aesthetic sport to follow at Beijing, I think ice dancing is a definite contender!

Bing Dwen Dwen is cute. Thanks, sleepingbooty . I don't find myself glued to the Olympics coverage. And if I don't attend (never have to date) or don't have anyone I know in the competitions (not so far...) I won't scrapbook them either. Maybe a shot of people watching the gold medal game or something. I have been known to set up olympic competitions with the dgk's, photograph their antics, and scrap THOSE pic's. I like to watch Canada play in hockey and curling. And then I will watch highlights of events like skiing and snowboarding jumps. The Canadian channels air a lot of background stories on top athletes from a number of countries. So if I hear about a particular athlete whose story interests me, i will make a point of watching their events. But I don't scrapbook that.

I saw the Toronto Blue Jays and wondered why....then realized it is probably a flame lol

I think it could be such an awesome idea to hold some Winter Olympics of your own in your snowy garden with the DGKs in February! Maybe with some chocolate medals to hand out at the end? So many cute photo and LO ideas! And the dog can be your own Winter Games mascot?

Some recent news for those following + documenting these Games: 1. JAMAICA HAS QUALIFIED THEIR BOBSLED TEAM! And for the very first time, #TeamJamaica has qualified for 3 bobsled events (4-men, 2-men, women's monobob). It has been 24 years since they qualified but here we are (and I'm so excited). Time to break out the Cool Runnings DVD. 2. The My2022 app that Olympic athletes, journalists and audience members attending the Games has been pointed out as being problematic: lack of encryption that is a major security breach for the entire phone and censorship keywords built into the app. Athletes are now being advised to use burner phones in China instead. 3. In even more sinister news, Beijing 2022 officials have warned athletes and journalists against " violations of the Olympic spirit". While the IOC maintains that athletes are free to express their opinions as long as it's not during competition or medal ceremonies, China seems intent on threatening legal action in case athletes speak out against the government and its Human Rights violations. Not sure yet how I'll incorporate the political news surrounding these games. It will likely be a newspaper headline on the matter but I do wonder if I don't want to discuss the matter more. Anybody got plans?

We are now one day away from the actual beginning of the Beijing 22 Winter Olympics! Curling fans: it begins tomorrow already. On Thursday, we'll have curling, ice hockey and freestyle skiing. Figure skating is added to the roster on Friday before the opening ceremony. Time to get ready and by get ready, I mean stock up on snacks, start filling in prediction sheets and free up time to watch. Also, the IOC have dropped the official teaser video for these Games:

If anyone wants to use the Beijing 2022 PL cards I've mocked up, here's the Dropbox link. There's a title card, a "this olympian" card, a podium card and a #teamUSA card. All 3x4, PNG format, in the minimalist style shown below.
