I'm thinking about putting some cream cheese and sour cream in mine this year.
Usually we just use butter, salt and milk.
How do you fix yours?

I make mine with garlic, butter, plain yogurt & a little bit of milk. Season w/ salt & pepper. I use red potatoes for Thanksgiving.

I roast a head garlic and squeeze that in, 1/2 bar of cream cheese, salt and pepper and then enough chicken broth to moisten them to the perfect consistency.

No! Sacrilege!
LOL Seriously though, we are purists when it comes to these sort of things. Fortunately DH and I are on the same page about this.

I use only sour cream and cream cheese.
Hubby says then it's 'firm' enough for your gravy not to leak, lol.

I like cream cheese and half and half and butter in them. DH's family likes cheese in them, but to me, that only goes with beef, not poultry.

I like them "loaded" with cheddar cheese, bacon and sour cream on top.

I keep them plain - just butter and milk. Then I whip the hell out of them so they are nice and fluffy!

Peeled russet potatoes Heavy cream Cream cheese Sour cream Salt White pepper
After putting them in a buttered casserole dish I put pats of butter on top and roast it uncovered until the top layer is golden brown. It is the rare time I don't put garlic in my mashed potatoes.

My family thinks I'm fancy because I leave the skin on, lol. I use red potatoes, butter, milk, salt and pepper. That's as fancy as I am allowed to get around here, lol.

For Thanksgiving, we do butter, cream, Golden Yukon potatoes, salt and pepper.
On other occasions where no one would be putting gravy on their potatoes I will sometimes add in blue cheese crumbles. I like the blue cheese version with steak or roasted chicken.
Another favorite is butter, cream, sour cream, sharp cheddar and minced onion...those I put in a casserole dish and bake for 30 minutes after mashing.

My dh and I deemed my thanksgiving mashed potatoes as the best I've ever made. I made them today so all I have to do is throw them in the oven tomorrow. Here's what I used... 7 lbs red potatoes 2 sticks softened butter 1.5 packages of softened cream cheese 1 tsp salt pepper to taste quart light cream Deeeeeelicious. Heart attack material? For sure, but delicious.

Usually we just use butter, milk, and salt but this year we are making them with cream cheese, sour cream, butter, and cheddar. We never had them that way before we just wanted to try something different.

Years ago, a gal on the old AOL scrapbooking message boards shared her recipe for them with whipping cream.
OMG ... seriously awesome.
You mix some whipping cream and butter to make the mash which you put in a casserole dish.
Then you mix up the whipping cream so it is whipped and then fold in shredded cheddar cheese. Put that over the top of the mashed mixture and then bake until the top turns golden brown.
I shared it once with a friend and the following years after she had me bake 2 huge foil dishes of them for the YMCA Christmas party.
Bonus - the topping keeps the mashies really toasty warm!
It's a calorie free day after all!

I make mine loosely based on her recipe. My dh doesn't care for season salt so I just use regular salt. But they are SO creamy and delicious and I love that I can make them ahead of time.

If you had my mashed potatoes, you'd think you died and went to heaven. They are legendary. I use regular russets. I don't measure anything. I judge based on taste and I have been making them this way for 25 years. I use whipping cream, not milk. I also use Smart Balance or margarine, not butter. Celery Salt and Garlic Salt. I mash them first then use my Cuisanart hand mixer to mix them almost to a pudding consistency. Not one lump. EVER!

cheleoh - that's a LOT Of sour cream! (especially in addition to the butter). Of course, I *LOVE* sour cream... ametallichick - My grandma's were smooth like that, and looser like your pudding description. Mine have evolved to thicker/dryer over the years.

Cream cheese and butter here. My oldest son will only eat my mashed potatoes because of this. He is spoiled!

Yukon gold potatoes, real butter (and lots of it!), hot milk, salt and pepper. We're purists here. I like to taste potato.

For Thanksgiving we just use butter and milk. My mom makes the best gravy so no need for fancy mashed potatoes.
At home I will sometimes add sour cream since we always have that on hand. I will also sometimes add cheese or garlic.

My sisters have had friends come over for my mom's gravy lessons So no need to fancy up our spuds on Thanksgiving!

On turkey day the only thing I use to fancy up my mashed potatoes is gravy.
