I'm not a football fan (hockey is my sport) but DH is a life long Bills fan so I am in the room while the games are on and pay attention occasionally. Tonight's game was a rollercoaster. Good game with a lousy ending for our house. But my overwhelming question from the start of the game is how in the hell in this day and age is the Tomahawk Chop still a thing? I have no idea. I think it’s ridiculous when the Braves fans do it, and equally ridiculous when the chiefs fans do it. I also wonder why both have retained their names when other teams didn’t.

There's no reason why Chiefs need to change their name as it was named after KC Mayor whose nickname was Chief. If "chief" is insulting then we will need to reconsider the title name for Police Chief, Fire Chief, etc.

Both of those things point to a Native American connotation to their name. Let alone the arrowhead as part of the team logo. What exactly do arrowheads have to do with being a Mayor or a Police Chief or a Fire Chief? Nothing. The mayor liked to pretend he was a Native American - it is a pretty racist history. en.as.com/en/2021/11/20/nfl/1637408876_908832.html

ETA they also had extensive talks with local tribes and none said they should change their logo or team name.

Actually it's "GEHA field at Arrowhead Stadium" so it's still Arrowhead and I hope that name never goes away! Yes, they're currently working with local tribes: www.chiefs.com/americanindianheritage/

Why the Mahomes hate? I'm not a football fan, but do live in KC. He's always struck me as a good kid with intentions to stick around. Those who actually follow football seem to think he's a good player too

They died a slo-mo of that look on his face after he got the unsportsmanlike foul and he looked so pissed. Talk about death stare. Yesterday Rodgers, today Brady. If Mahomes goes down, it will have been a good weekend. It would have been an almost perfect football weekend (my home team has been out)... but damn.. that Bills/Chiefs game... CRAZY.... just wish Bills could have done it.

Those who actually follow football seem to think he's a good player too I HATE the Chiefs (and I am a former KC gal..lol) but 20 years a Bronco fan.. but anyways.. Mahomes IS a great player and I give him kudos for that.. And seems like a good/nice person. So while I am conflicted with the Mahomes love and a Chiefs hater I totally know he is a good player and respect that. The only thing I hate worse than the Chiefs ANY team that has that snooty Tom Brady on.. now there is someone that would make me a Chiefs fan in one hot minute. Cheater, crybaby, entitled, entitle wife.. yuck.

I'm cheering for the Bengals. Zach Taylor is their head coach and his mother was one of my sorority sisters at the University of Oklahoma. His dad was captain of the OU football team. Such a nice family!

One of our branch offices is in Denver so the smack talk gets LOUD on Fridays before Broncos/Chiefs games. As a pretty much universal non sports fan I just sort of roll with it all, but when the Royals went to the world series the first time I did develop an intense dislike of Joe Buck, so I do have some sports hate street cred

I am a Royals fan and was right there during the I-70 series in 1986 (or was it 85?).. that was a blast to be involved in that... even after all these years. Oye.. Joe Buck... not a fan. And not sure why other than he is annoying.

I think that eventually their names will be changed like the Redskins and the Indians organizations. It will just take a bit more time and pressure. The verbiage in this thread is exactly what happened locally around the Redskins, down to quoting talks with some Native Americans that had no issue with the team name remaining the Redskins and that didn’t find the name offensive. A portion of the fans rabidly defended the name. Dan Snyder dug his heels in for years, but eventually caved. We will learn the new name next week. The Tomahawk Chop was never a thing amongst the DC fans, but that is the only positive I have to say about the name.

We're a Pats house and root against Brady now, haha. We're thrilled. But we're behind the Bengals to go all the way. Same here. Although, tbh, I haven’t been a Brady fan for a very long time.

But my overwhelming question from the start of the game is how in the hell in this day and age is the Tomahawk Chop still a thing? dh and i say the same thing every time we see them do it! why are they still allowed to do it? it comes through as being really tone deaf and disrespectful. and i've never seen a native american banging on the drum. ever. it's always the last kind of person who should be chopping during this sensitive political climate. the whole thing is a shame.

There's no reason why Chiefs need to change their name as it was named after KC Mayor whose nickname was Chief. If "chief" is insulting then we will need to reconsider the title name for Police Chief, Fire Chief, etc. Then why do they do the tomahawk chop? So out of curiosity I googled "how did the Kansas City Chefs get their name" and this article was the first one to come up. It doesn't sound nearly as innocuous as Amy makes it seem, although I have not explored further: www.cnn.com/2020/02/01/us/kansas-city-chiefs-name-race-trnd/index.htmlI did not watch any football this weekend and am now kicking myself that I didn't. Darn it all....
