I’m not even going to comment on the bagging groceries debate, what I want to know is do people go to the supermarket for 3 things and actually walk out with just those 3 things? Please, tell me how you do it because I would walk out with 3 full bags. Target pick up! Only way I can make a target run and only buy what I go in for 🤣

As as result of this thread I just did a search for "scan and go" and one of the big chains is doing it here...you scan with your phone as you shop and pay in the app, then go to a separate check-out & show the code that you've paid and the gate opens to let you out. Sounds promising! Only in one shop that I sometimes go to, but I'm definitely going to try it next time I'm there. Apparently we're getting an Amazon grocery store that will do this. It sounds good to me and I can't wait to try it. My regular grocery store doesn't have this unfortunately.

Im very particular about my grocery packing so I get ya (though I wouldn’t want people food stuff and dog food stuff together).
I was so annoyed at the grocery packing 1 day, that I did something never done before….complained on their FB page, even took a pic of my bag.
There was a point that Meijer got rid of most of them self scan, they only had a few and it was limited to 5 items so I was forced to go to a cashier and wait in a 20 minute line every time. The cashier put raw meat, fresh produce, cleaning supplies and toys all together in one bag (nevermind that I was buying a weeks worth of groceries so those things could have been with other like items.
It took years but eventually the self checkouts came back and they even added the shop and scan feature which I always use now. So nice to be able to bag my things, my way, as I go thru the store.

I do 99% of my shopping online with curbside pickup and 1% at self check. I always liked to bag my own bags, because I bag in groups, fridge, freezer, pantry, cleansers. That way it's easier to unload. I think you have to ask for what you want when you have a bagger. My new favorite toy is the smart cart. Not sure if they have them in your region, AussieMeg . You scan each item as you go. The cart is a scale and scanner. Then at the end you pay w/your credit or debit card and switch to a regular cart to get the items to your car. No lines, no fuss, no muss.

I doubt anyone's interested in this topic any more but I'm stuck in the car waiting for my husband soooo...
At my main grocery store, you just wheel the cart up and the cashier takes items out to scan (As opposed to a conveyer belt.) I LOVE this. If a person was extremely organized they could probably arrange items in the cart to be grouped together as they're taken out, but I don't always manage that exactly.
During the pandemic, my grocery store started requesting that if you were using your own bags, that you would do your own bagging, too, I guess so cashiers didn't have to touch a lot of germy bags. So I started bagging my own and turned out I kind of preferred it that way. Now the cashiers are able and willing to bag into reusable, but I still tell them I'll do it myself.
The only thing is it can be a bit stressful if I didn't get a lot of stuff and then by the time I get done paying, I have to hurry to bag so don't slow down the cashier since I know their speed is tracked.
But doing it myself I can make my bags a comfortable weight to carry and group items just how I want. I like it.

Many grocery stores in my area have two separate check-out belts, so that you are not so rushed to pack up your groceries. Baggers are not a "thing" here, and bag-it-yourself is the usual way to do it. I like bagging myself and with the two separate belts with a button that will move things closer to the end, makes it less stressful.

I will join you! I hate when I am loading my bags in the car and several bags have only one item in them, Yet the hot deli food is in with cold things! I am vocal about it and I will ask for things to be put in separate bags Like shampoo and cleaners away from my food items. Often it is younger checkers that tend to do that.
I now do curbside pick up and I have noticed that oftentimes the delivery person will empty bags with one or two items into a bag with similar items. I really appreciate that.
