"Five people were in jail after Midland Police made arrests at Midland Christian School Wednesday morning. According to the Midland Police Department, three administrators and two coaches at Midland Christian School were arrested and charged with Failure To Report With Intent To Conceal Neglect Or Abuse. Midland Police did not release the names of those arrested, but arrest affidavits obtained by NewsWest 9 show Barry Russell, Gregory McClendon, Matthew Counts, Jared Lee and Dana Ellis were all interviewed regarding a sexual assault.
The assault reportedly took place at Christensen Stadium around January 20, 2022 during a baseball practice.
The victim, whose name is not being released due to his age, was interviewed by Children's Advocacy Center.
During the interview, he told the forensic interviewer that he had been in the locker room to change when the lights were turned off.
Another student told the victim that it was "freshman initiation day" before someone began to hit the victim.
The victim said he was then pushed to the ground while still being hit and everyone was screaming at him. He stated he attempted to hit his attacker but was told he was not allowed to hit back.
According to the affidavit, the victim then stated he was sexually assaulted using a bat....
Ellis had reportedly notified Lee about the incident back in January, and Lee instructed McClendon and Counts to investigate the incident.
Lee told the MPD officer on Feb. 14 he would not turn over the requested documentation about the incident and refused to answer any more questions over the phone.
A search warrant was then served on Feb. 14 at the school. Police were able to obtain the documents concerning the investigation, which the officer stated were essentially nothing and had only been created a few days prior.
During the investigation, officers determined that the five people arrested all had knowledge of the sexual assault but did not report it as required by the Texas Family Code."
EXCELLENT MORAL TRAINING, Like teacher, like student.

Remember they are christians! It's posted somewhere... I'm sure it is. Along w/tons of prayers, 10 Commandments, "In God We Trust" signs, and posters reminding kids that believing in God makes you a better person, etc.
Hope these kids wake up sometime.

Remember they are christians! It's posted somewhere... I wish “Christians” would stop worrying so much about putting Christ back in Christmas. The real crisis is the need to put Christ back in Christian!

The Christian thing aside, every teacher in the state of Texas, public or private, is supposed to receive training about abuse and our duty as a mandated reporter. I can't imagine what these people were thinking, risking being arrested by covering something like this up. Even if there were school politics involved, I'm not going to jail to cover for anyone.
ETA: I hope the boys who committed the assault are charged with assault or whatever is appropriate under local statute. I hope the adults who covered it up receive stiff penalties for their failure. Poor kid. No one should be treated like that. And then to have the adults you trust cover it up to protect your abusers? Disgusting.

I'm horrified that the teachers, coaches and administration of any school, anywhere sat back on what they knew. Or dismissed the complaint by the student and their family, hoping it would disappear without any real investigation. Good for them for going to the police. Good for the police for charging the adults involved. I am hoping to see students charged, too.

There was already a thread about this after their arrest.
Agree it's just terrible what happened and the cover up that occurred afterwards.

midland is straight out of Friday Night lights. This breaks my heart. This school is in our district on and off and we play them in most sports. We live in DFW, so not small town, but it’s a private school Texas league and there are not many other schools in west Texas their size so Midland travels to DFW. From everything I have heard from other parents, especially football families, The AD and FB Coach is hard core, good old boy and winning is the only option. I always hated playing them because the entire vibe of the games is just too much.
Keep in mind the entire community is so wrapped up in HS sports both public and private schools that this kind of thing is more likely to happen because of the culture they have fostered around athletics and athletes in Midland. My heart is hurting not only for this kid but the people of this community who are kind and good people.

I am disgusted that these people even use the name Christian in their description. There is nothing about them that even comes close to understanding the teaching of Jesus. How a person could hide what happened is beyond my comprehension.
I hope the teenagers who did this get the most harsh punishment available. I hope the ones who hid the information get the most harsh punishment available.
I am so sad for the victim and his family.

The definition of a Christian, to ME, is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I bet these horrible people will all tell you they "have a personal relationship w/Jesus Christ". Even as their kids are sexually assaulting a freshman and THEY ARE COVERING IT UP. Miss me w/the "personal relationship" stuff and SHOW ME HOW YOU TREAT YOUR FELLOW HUMAN. I don't care which invisible deity you have a "personal relationship" with. I care very much about how you treat PEOPLE.

This makes me very worried for the freshman who was assaulted and his family. Especially if other 'good ole' boys and/or their parents are pissed about tlack of coaching from athletic director Greg McClendon, and head baseball coach Barry Russell. Cuz we know sports is more way important than some sissy tattling, kwim!?!?!?

I have such respect for this young man and his parents. The courage to speak up in that environment is huge. Genuinely praying and sending good thoughts to that family as they process, navigate, and move forward to healing. I used to be on our schools board and I can’t emphasize enough the importance of accountability and balance of power in every organization is the difference maker.

I do not understand the logic of going to the school about the assault and not the police. This is not a simple case of too much teasing, this is sexual assault. You go to the police for that stuff not the AD.
I will say, the most unsportsmanlike team we played was the Christian school. They played outright dirty and the fans were horrible.

It is scary and humiliating to report a sexual assualt to police officers you don't know. Victims and their families often start with the school because they already know the staff and it feels much safer. Not that it is safer; but at the beginning, it certainly seems so to many sexual assault victims.
