Trump made the remarks during an interview with conservative podcaster Buck Sexton. We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy." Also, wasn't it conservatives who cancelled The Dixie Chicks several years ago for speaking out against the President? What happened to those "patriots"?

The Dixie Chicks famously saw this first hand when they appeared on a London stage in 2003 to declare their opposition to war in Iraq and announced they were "ashamed" of President George W. Bush. They were blacklisted and received death threats. NATO never agreed to Not-One-Inch-Eastward. Gorbachev should have made that clear to Putin way back when.
Any claim that NATO expansion was an issue is correct only insofar as Helmut Kohl and James Baker were considering it as part of their horesetrading with Gorbachev so that Russia would accept Germany’s reunification. But what the GOP is forgetting now is that Bush Sr said no to that idea. No such promise/pledge was made to Gorbachev, whether verbally or in writing. The treaty that was signed did state commitments, but they were commitments on NATO’s role in Germany, not about expansion.
This claim by Putin and supporters had already been debunked over a decade ago.

Lots of Republican politicians know that Trump is unsuited for any elected office, but they are terrified of his base. Maybe at some point a more moderate Conservative party might splinter off, but it is really hard for a small party to get any traction. And I agree that they like big mouthed, aggressive leaders for some reason. I worry about DeSantis; smarter than Trump, but just as cocky. He is dangerous. And now, with what’s going on in the world, I think that some form of foreign policy experience is a must. |
