Hi, y’all!
We’re looking for cool lodging places in Clearwater early August for less than $450/a night. Any suggestions? Also, what are some fun things to do there? We will be going to a pro volleyball tournament in Ft. Lauderdale before heading that way. We are also going to drive around the area to see if we might be interested in moving there some day.
Thank you!

Sorry, no help here…I wouldn’t travel/visit/drive through/patronize Florida if the trip was free, lodging free, and there were millions of $$$ in spending money given for free.

Clearwater is beautiful, and lots of fun. All sorts of water sports, beaches, good food, etc. you’ll broil to death in August, lol but go float in the gulf and you’ll be fine.
Florida is way more than its perceived politics, don’t let anyone flying their sanctimony flag to disuade you from exploring wherever you like. I’m in SWFL 4 months a year and find many people that have the same ideals and political beliefs that I do.

So we were just in Indian Rocks Shore. We went to Clearwater and loved the vibe of it.
You will have a car, which we didn’t but I have to recommend taking a drive down to John’s Pass. We went and had lunch out of the water. It was so nice to explore and then grab a meal!!!
We went for low key, and IRS gave us that. My oldest son wants to do Clearwater next!!!

I don't know of anywhere to stay, but do live in the Tampa Bay area. We're not here in August, but here are some general suggestions. Please don't feel you need to limit yourself to Clearwater for lodging. Pinellas County has many beautiful areas to stay on the gulf. Clearwater Beach, Sand Key, Indian Rocks Beach, Redington Shores, Madeira Beach, St. Pete Beach, Pass-A-Grille, Terra Verde to name a few. If you don't want to drive everywhere, the Suncoast Beach Trolley runs from Clearwater Beach to St. Pete Beach. Explore the gulf coast and visit some of the Old-Florida type towns like Gulfport, Safety Harbor and Dunedin. If you visit Safety Harbor, I suggest visiting Whimzeyland for a bit of fun art. If you visit Dunedin, Honeymoon Island is a nice beach. Take a drive to Tarpon Springs which is a cute Greek town and see the sponge docks. In Tampa are Ybor City and Busch Gardens. (FYI - The Columbia Restaurant has a restaurant on Sand Key, although the original is in Ybor City.) The GEORGE C. MCGOUGH NATURE PARK, also known as the "Turtle Park" in Largo is really nice. SO, SO many turtles. (I LOVE the turtles!!) The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores is interesting. (The vultures can be a bit scary.) Many people find the St. Petersburg Pier interesting. (I'm not one of them.) Ft. DeSoto park is nice if you like outdoors. You can rent kayaks there, too. Although there are many nice parks all over Pinellas County. Clearwater Marine Aquarium
John's Pass in Madeira Beach is fun for a bit of shopping; you can access the beach from there, too. Are museums your thing? Here's a couple: Chihuly Center Dali Museum

Miami is about as LBGTQ friendly as they come. And that's only one small corner of FL. Don't spout off about what you don't know about.

Furthermore, the OP did NOT ask for your personal, ignorant opinion of FL, she asked for recommendations of where to stay and what to do. I have to intervene. It's not really an "ignorant opinion of FL", sorry. We've lived close by Clearwater for over 11 years now. While some beaches seemed nice 11 years ago, we stopped going since it was too dangerous for DH to even step on the sand. Regarding LGBT+ people in FL, I honestly fear for DD33 who is lesbian. We had her friends who were gay live in this complex for a year also. It's a scary thing to hear the locals give their "religious" opinions daily here. Being gay is something I'd keep to myself. I've met MANY, MANY people down here who have a similar disdain of people who originated from NY or up north, so I keep my mouth shut here, often, and never advertise where I originated from, etc. Has the DeSantis "Don't Say Gay" Bill been discussed? Yeah, that's FL. They want to turn the clock back, keep gays in the closet or eliminated. Sorry, but it's true. While some areas of SWFL seem to be more "normal", these backward people still exist here. As far as beaches, I used to love going to Honeymoon Island, near Clearwater. I'd steer clear of visiting where the Scientology building is. I went once and it gave me the creeps, esp when you see these vacant-looking faces walking near there. Sorry, but it's true, real, and a part of FL.

Don't spout off about what you don't know about. kibbles: Personally, I would have REALLY appreciated knowing much more about a place before I spent time or (God forbid!!) moved there!! It's not really "spouting off" or "shitting" on a thread asking for info. How do we know what other Peas here truly know about SWFL?? I know what *I've* experienced living here for nearly 12 years, and, YES, I try to warn people that I care about before they come here. It's not "shitting" on their plans, but it gives them my experience and they could weigh it out. I know I'd appreciate it!!!
Besides that, if anyone researched vacation spots on the internet, they'd see the overwhelming (not-solely-political) opinion that they'd never give their time or $$ to this State. Good to be informed and then make your own choice and opinion.
(You KNOW I say all of this without any disrespect at all. I care about you and the other Peas posting here).

I will say this now from your post—LBGTQIA may be “flourishing” right now, however with this new law (it’s what 3 days old) and likely more to come just like it, it will be harder for LBGTQIA youth to “flourish” and with this new law, they’ll be suppressed, Florida leadership is trying to eradicate and erase them. I was not nasty, mean, or ugly to the OP. I answered with my honest and personal opinion, something peas do every day here. So take your little bitchy, ugly rant and stuff it. (I’m responding to you in the same tone you went after me). Last time I looked, I’m entitled to my own thoughts, and can post freely on this message board.

We were in that area last year to do swimming with the manatees.
We LOVED the Dali Museum and the whole area around the museum was a pretty place for a stroll (waterfront with pretty sailboats). That museum hosts a lot of special exhibits, so I would see what’s there now and the audio tour of the permanent exhibit was fabulous.

I won’t support an economy on vacation that is creating bills to destroy people because they are LBGTQIA. It’s my right to think it, say it, support it. More people don’t speak up about it. And I didn’t just come in a drop a post and leave. You put more into my first post here than Was ever mentioned—I wasn’t ugly or nasty to the OP.

The Clearwater marine aquarium is really nice. I really enjoy the Dali museum. There is pier 60, dolphin watching and lots of themed cruises. The pirate cruise captain Memo’s is fun if you have kids. Busch Gardens but it will obviously be hot in August. There’s the Florida aquarium, Johns pass is nice for an afternoon. There’s the Westfield mall with indoor ice skating (I think that’s the name of the mall). Honeymoon Island is beautiful and there is also Caladesi Island park.
I’m not too sure about lodging because I live here but we have stayed in the Hilton Clearwater beach resort and it was beautiful.
Enjoy your trip!

Wow some of you are assholes. I've been in SWFL for 22 years, lots of us lefties, LGBQTIA here in Naples living our best lives. Not all of Florida is the villages and MAGA. But thanks for treating us as such. Try to remember we vote too, and hate Desantis and all he's put us through during Covid. There are some of you on this thread who show up to every thread to make it political. You are not a good look for us as Democrats. Think about that, and how you're treating others. And if you think you're superior to me (Us) because you don't live in Florida? I come from NY. I know elitists when I see them. Seeing a lot of you lately spout how terrible it is here. Places are what you make them. I think I'll go out and have a swim, it was 87 here today, sure beats shoveling snow and paying a fortune in taxes. KikiPea- The Wyndham in Clearwater is really nice. I am sorry this happened to your thread.
