Yep, scrapnnana, I think there are many different factors. And I agree completely with
"The manufacturers, in an effort to get scrappers to buy more product, focused on pages that had more products that pictures. I think that discouraged a lot of potential scrappers as well as established scrappers, who felt that scrapbooking cost too much per page. Trends changed incredibly fast, and those who weren't trendy sometimes felt that the trendy scrappers looked down their noses at them. If you are made to feel like something is wrong with your pages, it's easy to lose your enthusiasm."
But I do think scrapbooking will stay around, as everyone likes to preserve memories. But the way the memories are captured is so diversified now with all of the avenues open to us. I also think that there are some traditional scrapbookers that just do it with less embellishment and don't view and go on-line. They generally just buy from the big box or chains. They will still plug away when time allows.
I have 2 nieces (20's and early 30's) who both fit the later category. They love coming to scrap with me to learn new things, but feel the on-line time just isn't worth their time.

I've reached the age where I look at all my completed albums and I wonder what on earth is going to happen to them when I'm gone? They are bulky and take up a lot of space, they don't fit on standard bookcases and honestly, we don't look at them that often. I make a lot of cards, I've done numerous baby books as gifts and I do small books covering specific events, but the day-to-day, year-long albums just don't make sense for me anymore. I'm pretty sure this is true for many people and, along with all the other reasons listed on this thread, probably add up to a large drop in purchasing and interest.

you have all made great points... and they make me sad!! I am a new scrapbooker compared to a lot of you (the last 2 years) and I enjoy it so much. I want my kids to look back one day and see them, touch them, as I do with the album my grandmother made. Shutterfly is just NOT the same... I make those for people on the fly or for small gifts. I agree the pages get expensive and take a lot of time but thats what makes them so special! and Im late to the party... I had NO idea AC bought WRMK noooooooo I love the WRMK albums and pages so much more than AC. Sounds like I need to stock up.
