Heard about this a week or so ago and it made me sick. I've lived here for almost 12 years, and wished I could have instantly moved back to NY for a million reasons. THIS is one of them. We've never been open with our religious, political, sexual, etc beliefs while living down here. Maybe it's due to precisely where we live in SWFL here?? Not sure, but we don't appreciate all of the "Have a blessed day...." comments. How about, "Don't Say God" Bill?? How would that go over down here??
If there's another thread about this Bill, I apologize. I haven't been online too often. This Bill, along with what's been going on in Ukraine, has all made my stomach just tighten up. I just realize more and more that I don't belong down here. I could ignore the "Let's Go Brandon" flags and Trump2024 bumper stickers + that entire mentality, but you KNOW what the majority of people *right here* mostly believe in.
Regarding vacationing in FL or moving here, I DO give people that I care about a heads-up, since this is all very real here and in some towns you're surrounded by reminders daily and/or constantly. I'd never choose to vacation here or move here if I could help it. Our Governor is disgusting to even back a hate-filled Bill like this, but, hey, this is FL. It is easier to ignore the reality of FL's core beliefs if you're in a beachy, more decent area, but I can't ignore it.
(And before I hear, "Well, why don't you just move??", PLEASEEEEEEE! I would have moved 11+ years ago if I could have! It's all about being able to move. I am not complacent. I am bothered by what I see daily here and wish with all of my heart that I could move out of this State. It's NOT for me.)
Back to the Bill: What's the word in other States about this Bill?? Just curious. TIA.

Wow, just wow. All I can tell you is what you already know: that would NEVER fly here in NYC (can't speak for all of upstate, but I know there are plenty of places there, too, where this nonsense would not be tolerated).

My husband and I planned to buy a house in Florida so we can spend Oct.-April there when he retires. We love hot and sunny weather and we are currently in the state with the least sunny days. We also wanted to travel and spend a some time in Texas. At this point, I have no interest in spending money in either state. I may change my mind later, but I am just done right now.

There is a Hoodia making its way on my fb page that days
"I'm the teacher Fox News warns you about." While I wouldn't wear it. I am mostly that teacher...I'm not indoctrinating the kids but we don't shy away from discussions and we get down into them.

I just read the article and it listed several other states with similar legislation. I was surprised to see AZ on that list. The others not so much but this surprised me . The list of states I will consider moving to keeps shrinking.

It's full of old people, the only people (religious extremists aside) that still have a problem with being gay.

One of our only “voices” may be where we choose to spend our money. We’re choosing places that are not trying to hurt, eradicate, kill off people because of who they are.

We have pretty much decided that our vacation money will be spent in Blue states. As much as I love FL and Disneyworld we are not going until leadership changes.

I posted this on the other thread but wanted to share here, too. Even if you're lucky to live in a blue state, it's important to know what's happening around the country. Regrettably, Republicans are spreading these bills like wildfire and using them and Trump's executive action on divisive concepts as blueprints to copy. www.npr.org/2022/02/24/1082969036/florida-house-passes-controversial-measure-dubbed-the-dont-say-gay-bill-by-critiThe Don't Say Gay Bill that passed the Florida House, will likely pass the Senate where they’re discussing a similar bill and DeSantis will happily sign it. So not a law yet, but close to being one and more significant than just a proposed bill. And the bill shouldn’t be dismissed just because it hasn’t been signed into law yet. Also, it’s not the only bill being discussed and passed in Florida. The Florida House passed another bill, Stop The Woke that would limit classroom discussions on gender identity and sexual orientation, in addition to other things. It would also restrict employers from offering diversity training. www.axios.com/local/tampa-bay/2022/02/24/florida-house-passes-dont-say-gay-stop-woke-billsThere are 14 other states considering similar bills, but Florida is the first to pass one which is significant. thehill.com/changing-america/respect/equality/594980-florida-isnt-the-only-state-with-a-dont-say-gay-bill-15 this is why it matters. www.thetrevorproject.org/survey-2021/“LGBTQ+ youth who learned about LGBTQ+ issues or people in classrooms had 23% lower odds of reporting a suicide attempt in the last 12 months.”

aj2hall Thank you for posting that. Meanwhile people that live here are convinced that everything is sunshine and roses. Ha. It all makes me sick and I crave living in a Blue State! IMO, DeathSantis is trying desperately to make a bigger name for himself right now. I truly believe he'll be in the running with Republican's for the 2024 Presidential. That will be a freakin' nightmare. He's so much more scary than T-rump.

"Florida's so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill overcame its final legislative hurdle on Tuesday, when the state Senate voted to pass the measure. Now, it's headed to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has indicated his support for the bill. Even as it is poised to become law, young people in the state won't let the legislation pass silently. Members of Generation Z (defined as people born between 1997 and 2012) have for weeks led major demonstrations and school walkouts in protest of the bill, which would make it more difficult for teachers to discuss sexual and gender identity in primary public school classrooms. The legislation would also require administrators to alert parents of students who initiated conversations about the aforementioned topics. " www.cnn.com/2022/03/08/us/dont-say-gay-gen-z-resistance-florida-cec/index.htmlWhen the majority of voters are uninformed, uncaring, superstitious, and/or cruel, so is the legislation.

These bills are designed to do two things: one, to send a message to LGBTQ+ that they are not welcome in the state, and two, to further damage the public schools as more teachers leave in frustration.
Like the anti-CRT bills, this one is written just vaguely enough to make teachers who acknowledge the existence of gay people and families fear being the target of a lawsuit that consumes their precious time, resources, and mental health. Remember that we don't actually have to be convicted of anything in order to suffer serious consequences from having our names linked with an "investigation" and the inevitable death threats and terrorism from the MAGA mob, which now believes all public school teachers to be "groomers" for sexual exploitation.
Any analysis of this bill that ignores this result for teachers is not being forthright. I read a thread from a Fox News contributor earlier where he acknowledged that the bill was "vague" and would likely be "abused," but he seemed unconcerned because he felt it was unlikely any teacher could be convicted of breaking the law. Totally missing the point, likely on purpose.

The list of states I will consider moving to keeps shrinking. Hopefully in some of these states the bills won’t get any traction because most of the legislature is Democratic. But it is still disheartening that anyone would propose these initiatives.

This is what the Fox News crowd is hearing about liberals, which they translate into "teachers."
Seriously, my heart is broken. How long until an angry mob kills some teacher?

Florida Politics reports tornado hits the home of the "don't say gay" sponsor: Rep. Joe Harding’s Ocala home was among those damaged by severe weather in Central Florida Saturday. The Ocala Republican was not at home, though family was. No injuries were reported. “We are blessed,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.” floridapolitics.com/archives/508124-joe-hardings-home-among-those-damaged-by-ocala-tornado/I wonder if your god is trying to tell you something, Joe. Isn't that what a lot of folks like you believe when disaster strikes Haiti, or a gay nightclub, etc??!

Disney employees across the U.S. plan to walk out on Tuesday "Some employees of The Walt Disney Company plan to walk off the job Tuesday to protest what they say is the company's tepid response to a Florida bill that would restrict discussion of gender and sexuality in schools. The full-scale walkout came after Disney employees planned a series of smaller walkouts during their 15-minute breaks to urge the company to take a stronger stance against the Parental Rights in Education legislation, which advocates have dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" bill. "The recent statements by The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) leadership regarding the Florida legislature's recent 'Don't Say Gay' bill have utterly failed to match the magnitude of the threat to LGBTQIA+ safety represented by this legislation," an open letter by Disney employees reads. "Primarily, those statements have indicated that leadership still does not truly understand the impact this legislation is having not only on Cast Members in the state of Florida, but on all members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the company and beyond," the letter added." www.npr.org/2022/03/22/1088048998/disney-walkout-dont-say-gay-bill
