It seems like an awfully big area. I get confused by what is included in the Midwest. I know Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, South and North Dakota, Illinois. What other states are included? Missouri

I would love to try cheese curds but alas, dairy allergy. Although I am working on trying some different things that do seem to be allowing small doses of cheese. DD's best friend, where she lives, is from WI. Loves cheese curds but also has a diary allergy, as does DD. I am wondering if I can take some with me next time I head to them and I find out the best way to serve them. Maybe we can do our dose of dairy allergy tablets and give them a shot. I think poutine would be the best way. (says the girl from the south and where the region thinks everything is better with gravy)

The Midwest, as defined by the federal government, comprises the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. I looked it up and was surprised.

Where my Ohio peeps at? We’re all just thoroughly confused as to why we’re considered Midwest! Oh so not Midwest! Here in winter, we drive around pot holes the size of moon craters and small ponds, in spring those pot holes become hidden with rain, mud, flooding (we do flood a lot!) and our cars are getting repaired, going into summer and autumn it’s all orange cones and construction! No one goes the speed limit, everyone’s in a hurry, and anyone wearing a hat is a terrible driver!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Sounds exactly like Nebraska, sans the flooding! Especially the hat and driver correlation!

So we have the separation of cheese curd Midwest. I also do not love cheese curds. I can eat them, but meh. I would rather eat Runza fries.
I am sorry Missouri, I lump you with the South, except for Kansas City. Heading East through Missouri feels way more like being in the South especially the local accents. My daughter went to college in St. Louis. I drove I-70 many times.

Not only does Wisconsin have cheese curds, we build castles to guard and protect them. 😜😉

Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland They do call them that and our great state leaders want to put a train connecting them. The 2.5ish hour car ride from Cleveland to Columbus will only be 5 hours. Not sure what the 90 minute Columbus to Cincinnati will be. I can hardly wait. Just so you know Columbus is commonly known as Cow-town even though there probably hasn’t been a cow within city limits for years except at Ohio State.

If you're ever on the Oregon Coast, you can get cheese curds at the Tillamook Cheese Factory, if you can find a parking space... we get them when we go camping. Also A & W.
This thread hijack is making me hungry, and thinking I live in the wrong part of the country... although Jell-o salad, ew!

I was shocked.

I was shocked but we were driving somewhat rural in an area we had never been and it looked like mini compounds.

I love Tillamook cheese, but I just don't get cheese curds 🤷♀️ ETA: I wonder if it's because the cheeses I like the most are generally aged. Maybe they curds just don't have enough cheesy flavor for me.

Will I have to leave the board if I admit to not having the faintest idea what cheese curds are?

Will I have to leave the board if I admit to not having the faintest idea what cheese curds are? They are un-aged bite sized pieces of cheddar cheese that squeak when you eat them. Now you won't be kicked off the board

The “new” cheese thing around us is grilled/fried haloumi cheese.
I think Greek restaurants set it on fire at the table, but we are finding it in bags that you can grill or fry (we like frying it in a non-stick skillet and it’s salty cheesy perfection!

I find I am spending way less time here. I would like the politics to have their own group. Those threads are not friendly or educational. It’s all bashing especially if you have your own thoughts and try to share them. Travel advice should be just that. Stay to the topic or create your own thread! Me too. I have thought about never visiting again, been around since early 2003. I used to visit daily and now it is a couple times a month. I feel like you have to walk on eggshells around here.

I think the bad aspects of this place (and yeah there is some) are a bit overblown. Even after the direction this thread took, i still don’t feel like I’m walking on eggshells. That being said if you (general) feel like this isn’t a healthy place, I would encourage stepping back for a bit. I have, and it helps.
