Wait…there are people who think a social score is a good thing? Social scores are talked about as a cautionary tale from Communist China, not a goal. Good lord. Never watch Black Mirror (there’s literally an entire episode about the social score nightmare)? Read 1984? Think about anything critically? Well "Black Mirror" is a dystopian/science fiction-y/weird things type of show so yeah, it's fiction. That was a good episode though. Do you really just watch things and think “oh that’s fiction”? The whole purpose of the show is that it is political and social commentary. It is meant to be analyzed and applied and discussed.

I was going to wait until the Reading thread tomorrow but I've just finished reading Hivemind: The New Science of Tribalism in our Divided World. And I think it should be required reading for anyone with strong political opinions on either side of the spectrum. Cavanagh is a psychologist who examines group think, positive and negative and gives us hope for how we can bridge some of the gap between us. I think it was a very interesting look into the phenomenon of people being so beholden to their hive, that they can't reach across and see where the other side is coming from. I'm totally getting this and then maybe giving it to my dad and my so Hold up. SO?

Ugh, I hate these meta threads where everyone talks about how much they hate the board for this or that reason. It just becomes a passive aggressive way for self-appointed "nice" peas to shame the ones whose way of posting they don't like.
Stay or don't. Call out specific peas in the moment if you feel like it. Ignore/block them if you feel like it. Recognize that even if you feel you're a "nice" pea, there are probably people who roll their eyes every time you post, because no one is everyone's cup of tea. If you're staying and complaining, under the impression that complaining is less annoying than arguing ... well, I disagree. Complaining is just as annoying in my opinion.

Just to be clear…you can be who you want and post what you want, “because that’s who you are” but others have to stand down on their thoughts and opinions if the OP doesn’t like them/agree? You're behaving like a bull in a china shop. KikiPea wanted suggestions on a place to stay in a place you despise, so you came in, wrecked the place and continued on to make it all about you, stomping on her into yet another thread. Nope. I wasn’t the source of the hatefulness and meanness on that thread. Check yourself.

I would like to make a point about that thread that went bad. If you are a family that loves a member of the lgbtq+ community, knowing where there isn't acceptance of your loved one in a travel location is important to us. Also, some of us don't think who our loved ones are should be (is a?) political issue. Calling it that and dismissing it as a political issue in itself can be offensive. I'm hoping to say this in a non-threatening way because I really want people to understand. This is a huge deal for us and if I were posting like Kiki did, and for some reason didn't know that information about the location I was traveling to, I would have appreciated the posts that had pointed it out. I do see that some responses got nasty. Those aren't the responses I'm referring to. Thank you so much for this. ❤️🌈🌈

Doesn’t really matter to me either way, but people have been complaining about political threads for years. Was it the 2004 election? I’m not sure.

Why? I’m quite capable of talking both politics and lots of other things. I don’t think posts should be shunned, like there is something terrible about being political. The board is riddled with game threads, which I never participate in, but I would never shun them to their own board either - people clearly enjoy them, so it’s fine with me. Agree. I hate the game threads. Some days, that is the majority of the front page. At least there's politics to break them up. Even though I usually don't participate in them, I sometimes do. We are all here for fun, information, friendship and sharing. We can do better. On Kiki's thread, if they wanted to inform her of the LBTG problems, they could have shared info on the area, and then said..just as a side note..blah blah. But just to come on the thread and shit on it. yea, just don't. I feel like we might be a bit bored on here? the lack of new threads and new subjects has gotten less and less. I'd like us all to share more...but then we get commenters ruining it like kiki's threads. Can we not do that?

Reddit has karma - upvotes raise it, down voters lower it. I love Reddit, but it does lean left generally, so this ‘measure’ can be abused. Don’t you think most of the internet, in general, leans left? Mainly because the demographic is younger, and therefore more liberal?

Unfortunately, I think because covid was so politicized and because of the 24 hour news cycle, politics have become so pervasive in everyone’s lives, especially in the last 2 years. I understand some peas would prefer this board remain a happy place without all of the politics. Everyone could use an escape from the stress of the last 2 years. And I understand the frustration when politics pop up on a thread that appears safe. But, I do think the political threads have a place here, too. I don’t mind the political threads because I stay out of them, but when a post is made asking a specific non-threatening, literally completely innocent question, people need to keep their rude opinions to themselves. I didn’t ask for anyones negative opinions. I asked about where to stay for a vacation. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about the place I want to visit. It’s my prerogative. You don’t have to like it, but I’ve been going to this said state for at least 15 years, and will continue to do so. Either add answers to the questions, or move on. I will definitely think twice about posting anything to this board anymore, with the exception of my thoughts and prayers (which some of you don’t agree with, but that’s who *I* am, and will continue to be.), or an actual answer to a question may be able to assist with. And, no, it’s not because I don’t have thick skin. Nothing in that thread was directed at me, but it did not belong there, and I refuse to wade through peas spewing crap on my innocent post. Take it elsewhere. I'm sorry for your frustration and for what happened to your thread. Just wanted to clarify my post and try again. I was only trying to say that obviously this board reflects what's happening in the world, mostly in the US. And politics have invaded every part of our lives including work, school, family, friends, free time etc, it's hard to escape them. I wasn't trying to justify what happened, I was just trying to suggest that it's not surprising that divisive issues leak into seemingly innocuous threads like vacation places. Again, not justifying what happened, just commenting. I'm trying to remain neutral regarding your thread. I do understand your frustration and sympathize with the aggravation that your post about something happy turned ugly.

Nothing like a vent thread to get the opinions flowing. Sometimes things go too far but mostly I find this board to be the most sane and organized social media online. If I offend someone, please tell me. A PM would be nice. I might say something stupid and not realize it or be having one of those days and just say what is on my mind thoughtlessly.
I participated on another discussion board once where there were subjects we weren't supposed to talk about. It was boring! Are we more honest than if we were talking face to face? Yes. Is that always a bad thing? Definitely not, imo.

On a thread like this, I believe if you listed the comments down one side of a piece of paper and the posters’ names down the other, I could draw the lines to match them up with a good 80-90% accuracy.
We’re like a big complicated family. We know who all the crazy aunts are.
Coexistence without falling for the bait every time might be a better strategy for some.

Reddit has karma - upvotes raise it, down voters lower it. I love Reddit, but it does lean left generally, so this ‘measure’ can be abused. Don’t you think most of the internet, in general, leans left? Mainly because the demographic is younger, and therefore more liberal? Social media maybe? But even there, on twitter especially, there are plenty of right leaning people. And discussion boards like this one that have significantly more of one demographic will lean that way. I think US social media and websites probably mirror US political views with some leaning left, some leaning right and fewer and fewer independent, middle of the road. It's a good question, though. A quick search found this, I thought this was interesting www.pewresearch.org/internet/2019/04/24/sizing-up-twitter-users/U.S. adult Twitter users are younger and more likely to be Democrats than the general public. Most users rarely tweet, but the most prolific 10% create 80% of tweets from adult U.S. users
The analysis indicates that the 22% of American adults who use Twitter are representative of the broader population in certain ways, but not others. Twitter users are younger, more likely to identify as Democrats, more highly educated and have higher incomes than U.S. adults overall. Twitter users also differ from the broader population on some key social issues. For instance, Twitter users are somewhat more likely to say that immigrants strengthen rather than weaken the country and to see evidence of racial and gender-based inequalities in society. But on other subjects, the views of Twitter users are not dramatically different from those expressed by all U.S. adults.

And these type of arguments have chased a lot of long-term peas off the board. There's a lot fewer people here now. Right now you can still be on page one with comments from 13 hours ago. Remember when it would move so fast? Cannot believe how the travel post turned so bad (I did comment on it just answering the question/giving my opinion on Clearwater). I remember how busy the board was at the beginning of covid and I really enjoyed keeping up with everyone. When things aren't going well in real life, it's nice to escape here. I miss the fun threads! I may start a nail polish thread for fun!

One remark I received was that no one would care if my family lived or died. (Ottowa truckers thread)
That crossed a line for me.
It was very hurtful .
It was abuse.
Remember there are real people in real life on the receiving end of such remarks.
