I have a laundry list of excuses why I never volunteered for little league before, none of them great and all irrelevant, but I decided to do so this year with dh’s travel schedule lighter and yds old enough to be home alone a small bit.
I only volunteered for concessions….no one wants me to coach any sport.
OMG, the questions they asked were insane. They want your social, plus your drivers license # and a copy of your license (or ID). Do people really give this out? (I didn’t, I gave them the last 4 of my ssn). They also asked for references and employer. It was crazy, I doubt I gave this much info to get my job! And I know the school doesn’t ask for all that for parent volunteers. I’ll be curious to see if my application is denied 🤣
But it got me thinking….do people really just give this info to whoever asks for it? I know it’s on the National little league application but good grief, how many hands does it get passed thru along the way?

It is the reason we did not adopt a dog from a rescue organization. They wanted copies of our drivers license and our SSN. Nope! We ended up getting our dog from the Humane Society.

I feel like this all the time.
I can’t believe people give their real birthdays and other vital info when they register for websites and games and things like that. Those websites don’t need that info.

We have to provide similar information for background checks to volunteer with youth organizations here.
ETA: I would not provide it to a rescue group.
The youth orgs (and the school) I've volunteered with require this info, but you complete the application online via a secure form that interfaces directly with the background check service. Your SSN and DL info aren't visible to the other volunteers/leaders/school officials, etc.

I suppose they're conducting a criminal background check and need the info for that.
I refuse to give mine at the doctor's/dentist's office. They don't need it.

Wouldn't they need to tell you that they are running it? The US could be different. I've signed off on a background check when working a casino here but I didn't have to give my SIN. I've told my girls you almost never give out your SIN. DD20's card is still here. She calls one day and asks for the number I immediately question it. It was for a new job, so of course that's acceptable.

It’s pretty standard information for a background check. Most legitimate organizations run one of your working with or around kids. It’s a liability issue for them. Having both drivers license and ssn make it more likely that they have the right person. Some organizations also give the option of going to the sheriffs office and doing the check there without ssn and drivers license going through the organization.

I don't know the legalities of that. It may vary from state to state. It's safe to assume in any situation in the US where you are with/around kids and/or working with money, that they are going to run a background check.

Tried to fix it.

Wouldn't they need to tell you that they are running it? Yes, you need to have authorization to run one. Here are the Little League requirements around background checks. It looks like the OP's league is still operating in the Dark Ages and using paper, while there are preferred online portals that would be more secure. It's very clear that a background check will be run at application and annually thereafter (if you continue to volunteer) and that you're consenting to it by applying to volunteer. I hope your league denies your app without additional information, OP. Nothing against you, but if they're not following background check requirements, they're violating procedure and potentially putting kids at risk. They should be reported to the national org if that's the case.

I would give it for a background check for a situation like the OP described. Here we complete the form and submit it directly to the police department that does the checks.
I leave it off any form from the dr/dentist/etc that asks for my SSN.

And I’d be ok giving the info securely online but filling it out via a Google form or handwritten form had me scratching my head a bit. I’ll have to suggest the online portal to someone in the league.

In my state to do volunteer work with children involved, you have to have a background check, but they would have to tell you.
As a Foster parent, I have to have several different background checks, but I do have to sign acknowledging that they are running the check .
Honestly volunteers in Childrens activities should have background checks. You never know what kind of history they have. I feel very strongly as the woman who is convicted of child abuse in my sons case, was not allowed to be around children, but set up as an independent contractor and since no one checks up on that, she gets away with it. She give’s horseback riding lessons. How would you feel if the person caring for your child beat her own 5 week old baby skull in, causing a near fatality?
This is why I think not only volunteers but anyone working with children should be checked, it wouldn’t catch everyone, but would stop others.

That maybe an option as well, I can check into it, thanks for the idea! I have had a background check, several probably. I work for the school, prior to that the preschool (requiring fingerprints) and eons ago a daycare in another state (more fingerprints). We’ll see what happens. I texted one person on the league (I used her as a reference 🤣), she’ll let me know if I’m denied and I’ll go from there. I told her I draw the line at SSN but if they need anything else I’ll give it.

Working with children here, we have to be fingerprinted.
As in trek over to the police station and get your prints taken!

I'm guessing they want it in case they have to turn your account over for collection. I'll also guess that most people just give it to them, because they've been "trained" to do what medical people tell them. I've never had any of them refuse to treat me because I didn't provide it. I also don't like to give it on job applications; they can wait until I'm hired & filling in the info for the payroll staff. If they don't want to hire me because that makes me seem "difficult," I'm probably not going to be a good fit, anyway.

I'm sure that is why they want it, but as I've never had an account turned over to collections, that's just too bad for them. I honestly can't remember if I've been asked for it on job applications. Seems like no, at least for teaching. They do obviously have to have it before they can hire me.

When volunteering w/minors it wouldn't surprise me to know that they run background checks. I would never give my info to an animal rescue and I only adopt from rescues.

I refuse to give mine at the doctor's/dentist's office. They don't need it. I've had a doctor and dentist office both ask for social security number in the past month. I just leave it blank and they never question me. What surprises me is that they still put this on forms in this day and age!

I was the PTO Vice President when my kids were in elementary school. They just started to require the background checks for all volunteers right after my daughter left elementary school. So I didn't have to worry about it.
We never apply for new credit cards (Target card, AE card, etc.) because we don't want to give our SS numbers.

I personally do background checks (through FBI) and you do not have to provide a SSN.. you must provide a DL/State ID or passport. It is an option, but I have not needed one for 3 years now.

When we signed up for the covid vaccine, they asked for our social security number. I just checked the we didn't have one, I was not giving it out for that.

I never give it out for dentist offices either! Also, my husband is military so our insurance ID number is his social. Any school or church field trip forms where it asks for insurance name and number I just write "given when actually needed".

I think things are much stricter now when dealing with youth. And, if you'll be doing concessions, you'll be dealing with money. Could be the reason for all the questions.
