I personally do background checks (through FBI) and you do not have to provide a SSN.. you must provide a DL/State ID or passport. It is an option, but I have not needed one for 3 years now. It depends on the provider and the specifics of the kind of checks. That is true.. but a background check can be done without a SSN. Now specific places might require it, but to run it you don't need it. I have to run a pretty thorough check for my place.

And way back in college the profs would post grades on the door by SSN.
(And now we can't get our kids' grades from the school even though we may be footing the tuition)
Sorry, I went off topic...

It is the reason we did not adopt a dog from a rescue organization. They wanted copies of our drivers license and our SSN. Nope! We ended up getting our dog from the Humane Society. What?!!! Ok, I can see your DL. But your SSN? NO.

Oklahoma used to use SS# as your DL #s. When we moved to TX in ‘98 I had to learn a whole different number. Not sure if they still do that or not…

It is the reason we did not adopt a dog from a rescue organization. They wanted copies of our drivers license and our SSN. Nope! I always think about when our farm dog ended up at the county shelter. We were pretty sure someone picked him up from our farm and dumped him, so they could toodle around our farm without an angry dog barking at them. This dog had originally just showed up at the farm and made himself at home. Anyhoo, my brother-in-law goes to pick up the dog and the lady at the shelter gave him the third degree and wanted him to sign a form that the dog would be an 'inside dog with a fenced in yard'... WTF He is a farm dog. He has shelter, he has loads of shelter, but he is not living in the house. She wanted a bunch of other info from my BIL and he said "keep it" and started to walk out. She changed her tune quickly and he came home with the dog.

All parent volunteers at school or involved in sports here have to go through a background check that involves every bit of info you can possibly imagine. I literally had to call my mother to help me fill out my form, LOL!

I have a laundry list of excuses why I never volunteered for little league before, none of them great and all irrelevant, but I decided to do so this year with dh’s travel schedule lighter and yds old enough to be home alone a small bit. I only volunteered for concessions….no one wants me to coach any sport. OMG, the questions they asked were insane. They want your social, plus your drivers license # and a copy of your license (or ID). Do people really give this out? (I didn’t, I gave them the last 4 of my ssn). They also asked for references and employer. It was crazy, I doubt I gave this much info to get my job! And I know the school doesn’t ask for all that for parent volunteers. I’ll be curious to see if my application is denied 🤣 But it got me thinking….do people really just give this info to whoever asks for it? I know it’s on the National little league application but good grief, how many hands does it get passed thru along the way? They need your SSN and DL numbers to perform the background check necessary for you to volunteer in their organization, which involves lots and lots of children. Dont want to provide the information? Dont apply.

A store at the mall asked me for my birthday to send me coupons. Not my birthday month but my full birthday. I don’t need coupons that badly

I would give it for a background check for a situation like the OP described. Here we complete the form and submit it directly to the police department that does the checks. I leave it off any form from the dr/dentist/etc that asks for my SSN. As do I. They are asking for it because if you skip on your bill, they can use it to help collect the debt. (or so I have been told)

In college our student ID was our SSN. It was my student ID in high school. I was cleaning out some paperwork from high school, and I had a list with my SSN and it included the numbers for other students with their names! 😳 [Yes, I shredded it, but I have no idea if everyone else was as careful with that information.]
