We are a family of 2, so I often halve recipes. So 1 Tbsp becomes a 1/2 Tbsp fairly often. This is the reason we need it so often. I don’t like to use and dirty 2 other measuring spoons (that are often also frequently needed), or have to measure 3 different times, when we can use just the one spoon one time. We also have a few 2 TBSP that are used frequently. Again, keeps the more widely used spoons clean. With just the two of us it takes forever to have a complete load for the dishwasher; and while I’m happy to rinse out the dry seasonings off the measuring spoon in the soapy water, I prefer the greasier stuff to go in the d/w. So I like using the odd sizes.

I have never felt the need to use a 1/2 tbsp. I've never seen a recipe that lists it that way, but even if they did, I know that it's 1 1/2 tsp, so I'd just use those two spoons. In Australia, half a tablespoon is 2 teaspoons. Metric measurements: 1 tsp = 5ml 2 tsp = 10ml half Tbsp = 10ml 1 Tbsp = 20ml In American recipes, 1 Tbsp = 15ml. Or, to be precise, 1 US Tbsp = 14.78676ml. Y'all even make metric difficult !

I still have a half Tablespoon from an old set. It's the only one left of that set so it is easy to find in my drawer and I use it very often.

I took the 1/2 Tbsp off my measuring spoon ring because I kept confusing it with the 1/2 tsp... No other set I've owned came with that measurement, but now that I'm looking for a new set (where the labels aren't wearing off) it seems they all come with one. I'd rather have a 1/8 tsp, which my current set doesn't have... What about you? I have 4 sets of measuring spoons because I keep getting them as part of a set of other things LOL. I have some magnetic sets that have the 1/2 Tbsp., and I use it somewhat often because of half-recipes. However, I have this set as well that you might like because the measurements are engraved on the handles and do not wear off like the printed ones. Also, it has the 1/8 tsp. measurement. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZ4JCRL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've gotten to the point in my cooking that I generally just eyeball most things. I use my measuring spoons if I'm making something I haven't made before or for baking - I don't eyeball baking.

It comes with Tad, Dash, Pinch, Smidgeon, and Drop! ![](//storage2.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) I want those JUST for the cute words ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I knew there was NO WAY I'd pay for shipping, but I was curious to check what it would be. Well, they don't even ship to the U.S.! In the US, a tablespoon = 15ml, but in Australian standard metric, a tablespoon = 20ml. Grrrrrr! Okay, THAT is very weird! Especially in BAKING, which requires precision. A difference of FIVE MLs (one teaspoon) is kiiiind of a big deal.

I have both 1/2 T and 1/8 t, both of which I use regularly. ETA: I have a set similar to this and it's great. I love the magnetic nesting; keeps everything super tidy and no fumbling to find the right measurement. I have the same set. I didn’t like the magnet part but love the double scoop and that they are shaped differently.

Yes I have and use the half tablespoon measure. My set comes with 1T, 1/2 T, 1t, 1/2 t, 1/4 t. I definitely use the half tablespoon, because for some reason my tablespoon always goes missing. I have three sets of measuring spoons, but only one tablespoon! The others have disappeared. I also have this fun set: Mini Measuring Spoons. It comes with Tad, Dash, Pinch, Smidgeon, and Drop! Oh, and one time I bought a set of measuring spoons on line. It must have been from an American site, because the volumes were wrong. In the US, a tablespoon = 15ml, but in Australian standard metric, a tablespoon = 20ml. Grrrrrr! I would love these and use them, my moms recipes have these words often.

Now I have fallen down the rabbit hole of looking at measuring spoon sets on Amazon despite the fact that I have too many already. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I have and use 1/2 tbsp often. I just saw a set on Amazon that has a 2/3 tbsp. I've never seen that before and would have no use for it at all. I like the ones that Busy posted because they are dual sided.

I can’t remember the last time I used measuring spoons. I know I have some, but I can’t remember what they look like and I have no idea what’s in the set. I use measuring cups frequently, but have no use for the spoons. Do you bake? I use measuring spoons for baking, especially the baking powder or soda. For cooking I will either eyeball, use a regular spoon or grab a measuring spoon and still eyeball it. If I need to measure more than one thing and I'll just use one sized measuring spoon for all the things and do a few scoops or whatever. Not caring how full or heaping full the scoops are, just get the ratios approximate.

I only use measuring spoons when baking. I do have one bread recipe that has 1/2 T for one of the ingredients. I thought that was weird since it’s usually written 1 1/2 tsp. I do have one set of spoons that has a 1/2T.

I actually used both of those a couple days ago when I tried a new spaghetti sauce and meatball recipe. New recipes I always follow exactly (unless there's something I'm leaving out), but there are some 'regular' things I make that I just season willy-nilly. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/grin.jpg.gif) I hate to bake, but when I do it, I measure every single thing. Obsessively. I had no idea that there were differences between imperial and metric measurements of teaspoons & tablespoons. Thanks for that info AussieMeg. I am a big fan of google converter. I have to convert everything to imperial. I wish we'd been taught both in school.

One of my sets has a 1/2 T spoon, but I’ve never had a need for it. I would just eyeball it for any savory type dish. If I was baking and needed to be more exact if I halved a recipe I would just use 1.5 tsp. But, I’ve never halved a baking recipe. I eyeball a lot for cooking. Approximations don’t bother me. But I am careful with measurements for baking. And once you wrote that, it dawned on me that I’ve never halved a baking recipe either.

What she said 😁 This is not my experience, I have three sets of measuring spoons and all three tablespoons say 15 ml on them. I’m pretty sure 15ml is standard for tablespoon measurements in the UK. To answer the OP, I’ve never seen half tablespoons, all recipes I’ve seen say 1 1/2 tsps.

I very rarely use my 1/2 tbsp because I just use the 1/2 and the 1, so it lives in a different drawer. But thank you for the reminder!
I still use the bright red set that I bought for my first kitchen 33 years ago. My kitchens have been white, blue and terracotta for 27 years, but I don't stress about that kind of thing. Bright red is easy to find in the cupboard or drawer.
UK recipes are mostly by weight rather than volume, so I didn't buy measuring cups until I moved to Singapore where the recipes are mainly in American measures. That's where I got my white measuring cups in US sizes, which are slightly smaller than UK cups. I just have to make sure I remember to add a bit if I'm using a rare English recipe that goes by volume.

I’ve never seen it in a recipe that I can recall, but regardless, I know it’s 1.5 tsp, so I would just do that. Sometimes if I don’t want to dirty my tbsp but already dirtied my tsp, I just do 3 tsp.

thanks to you peas, I just bought this set of magnetic measuring spoons that I don't need! Where I keep mine now, it will be nice to have them magnetically attached instead of just willy nilly in the drawer. And it has 1/2 Tablespoon and 1/8 teaspoon!
LOVE the Leveler in this set ! I might need this set just for that !

Well, new set of metal measuring spoons ordered... with a 1/2 Tbsp and an 1/8 tsp. I make a lot of bread machine breads and sometimes the 2 lb loaf size has some funky measurements so it will be nice to be able to read my measuring spoons again.
