OMG, what a horrendous thing to happen to you! I can totally understand how it could happen, especially if you had only been getting a little bit over every pay check over a long period of time. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. When my kids were in school, we were living pay check to pay check due to my decision to send them to private school. If I had got a zero pay check one month, I would not have been able to pay my mortgage or school fees, or various other bills. This is totally 100% the fault of the employer.
I had not heard about the Phoenix pay system fiasco in Australia. I just googled it, and it was in a different state, and was not in my industry, which explains why I hadn't heard about it.
As the opening line said in the article I just read: 'I can't believe that a Google search wasn't done on 'IBM' and 'payroll',' says union head.

This pay system was put in place by an out-going Prime Minister. He lost the next election and didn't really care about the consequences, only that HE had replaced the payroll system for the Federal Government. Politics and all that!

Unless you have friends working for the federal government, you don't really hear much about the Phoenix mess any more ... I wonder if it will ever actually work properly?!! Back when all the ridiculousness started, I had a friend working for Parks Canada as a contract worker. Every pay period, she would have a new story about how her paycheque was messed up in some new way She worked with university kids who didn't get paid all summer--which makes it really tough to pay your tuition in the fall! She was lucky enough to have a spouse employed in the private sector whose salary was enough to pay their mortgage and bills until she actually got paid ... months later Just another part of the Harper government's legacy that no one talks about much any more. I think CUPE needs to start making a big ruckus about how things still aren't working properly--it's gone beyond ridiculous and should be criminal by this point!

We will be fine, but that feeling never goes away. The fact that this company had a history, important add ons for complicated payroll functions were cut, it just goes on and on.

Yep, Conservatives always run on cutting the federal service to save money. They cut 2700 payroll people because Phoenix could do it all. The news links above shows just how bad this still is, just for the clawing back. The regular pay issues continue. I have a friend get a job with the Justice department last summer. She didn’t get paid for months.

I have a friend get a job with the Justice department last summer. She didn’t get paid for months. Seriously, why does anyone take a job, or stay, when this is an ongoing disaster? I cannot imagine staying at a new job - no matter who it's for - that didn't pay me for months. Thanks, but no. I enjoy my work but at the end of the day, I work to get paid. You don't pay me, I don't work. It's disgusting they haven't fixed this in years. It's abusive to employees.

Sorry but no one will ever convince me that they didn't know they were being over/under paid and it was someone else's fault. If you (general you) are not looking at your paystub that's your fault. It's really not that hard to validate...it may be time consuming but it's your pay so it's worth it. If someone was underpaid, they'd surly expect a lump sum payment so if they are overpaid they should expect a lump sum chargeback. Well you would be wrong in a lot of cases. I couldn’t tell you if there was an error in my pay and certainly not one that went back years. I am sorry wallyagain! Totally stinks. My previous employer had something similar happen and it affected more than just a few people. They ended up doing it in incriminates or payments over time. Good luck. I hope you can get some relief. Similar thing happened to a person I work with and she didn’t notice she was being paid for an extra day of work/week for about 2 years. Our company was at fault though. She had submitted timesheets correctly and never noticed the extra day of pay a week (works 3 days paid for 4) and when HR notified our manager she was shocked of course, then worried about a full claw back but our company said it was an internal system failure so they weren’t clawing any back. 😮

Paying employees correctly is the employer’s responsibility. They need to have internal controls and manual spot-checks for errors. The reason they all use automated systems now is not for the employee’s benefit - it’s because it saves the employer time and money. So it’s their responsibility to find and correct errors in a timely manner - not to punish employees far after the fact. OP, I hope this is all resolved quickly for you. What a nightmare. I can’t imagine any rational person thinking this is your fault.

I always think big corp = big greed, with us little employees getting shafted but it didn’t turn out that way in this instance.

I am pulling this back up, as the saga continues.
So I agreed to the clawback, a set amount until paid back.
Apparently, nobody set an end date, so now I have way overpaid them and they owe me money.
In our current union newsletter, apparently there hasn’t been a pay run since Phoenix was implemented that was error free. 6 years. There are currently 400,000 pay issues waiting for service and that number keeps growing.
Sigh.

That’s nuts. I hope you get it resolved I would say quickly but that doesn’t sound like it will happen. Hard to believe what a mess your system is.

I said it originally, and I’ll say it again. I cannot believe employees are putting up with this. I’d have quit long ago and gone to work for a company that believes they’re obligated to accurately pay their employees instead of staying somewhere with such blatant disregard for their employees. It’s unconscionable for this to have gone on for years.
