How it started (white student is in the background, comes in, throws cotton balls at black student, then starts whipping him in the shoulder). WTF was that white kid doing?
How it's going:
"Terrebonne Parish NAACP Jerome Boykin said he met with school officials about the incident Thursday.
"This act was clearly something the student thought through to do," Boykin said. "It was a planned act and it was racially motivated. It has no room in our society or in our schools. It's really unfortunate that in these days and times African Americans still have to endure these racist incidents, especially in our school system. I was glad to hear that the school took swift actions against all who were involved. Unfortunately, racism is alive and well in this parish and in this country.""
Wonder what that 15 yo is learning in his religion classes?
"We are committed to spiritual formation and academic excellence in an environment rooted in Catholic values and in the teachings of Jesus Christ."
I'm sure Fox will invite the poor misunderstood white student on soon, to talk about all the ways he's injured by hearing about racism in America.

So what is the deal with the student who was filming? It seems as if he knew this was going to happen and wanted to record it? If so, this goes beyond the student throwing the cotton balls. Maybe not to the level of "criminal conspiracy," but at least to the level of discipline from the school re: bullying.

I'm going to say something but it won't be popular and I'm not saying this WASN'T racially motivated BUT isn't it possible that the kids have it out for each other? Kids can dislike each other not because of the color or their skin but just because they don't like each other. There isn't any racial bias in that case. There also isn't anything to substantiate that this was a racially motivated other than someone saying so.

It's disgusting to even mime the actions of brutality of these kids' ancestors - white people whipping black people, forcibly impregnating them to get more free slaves after the importation of slaves was criminalized, ripping families apart. Just stop.

Please explain further how there was no racial bias in that case, I'm sure we'll all wait.

Have you ever heard of throwing cotton and whipping someone as a random high school bullying incident? Does it not evoke slavery to you? WTAF I thought I'd seen it all here but nope. I am actually shocked that anyone could say this isn't outrageously, obviously, cruelly racist.

If you don't see the significance of cotton/whipping with a belt as racist, then you, my dear, are a major part of the problem!

What did you do when you didn't like someone? What do bullies do? They pick on the one thing a kid cannot change: their skin color, their glasses, their need for physical accommodation (disabled). Here you have a white student harassing a black student with the very things that white people did to black people during slavery. How is that not racially motivated? Throwing pencils isn't racially motivated. Whipping them after throwing cotton balls? C'mon. You're not that dense are you? Or maybe you don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I see the mad political marker is at it again. Please help me by removing politics from this thread. Hate crimes should not be political topic. If they are to you, that’s a problem.

At first I was confused because the camera was closer to another black student who was interacting with someone but it wasn't anything really. If you look in the background, there is the actual fight being discussed. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here that you didn't read the article at all and just went by that video and watched the wrong interaction like I did initially. Can you come back and explain please?

Seriously….it was cotton being thrown at a black student...and then being hit with a belt! How is this not racially motivated in your eyes??? I am just stunned by your reply. This has nothing to do with two kids "having it out" with each other. This is extreme racism towards the black student while others stood by and laughed.

“Wonder what that 15 yo is learning in his religion classes?” I can tell you that the 2 most racist and bigoted pieces of garbage at my DD’s school were the nun who was a history teacher and woman who was the religion teacher. They said such horrible things to the kids that didn’t believe all the BS they spewed. The both berated the only Black student we had to the point his dad and stepmom pulled him out. The stepmoms family has been with this school for 3 generations.

What I'm NOT shocked about... dropping a bomb and running rather than attempting to back up her assertion that the attack wasn't inherently racist.

Come on back and tell us you were wrong. You were - and it's okay to admit that. There's no way this was just two kids who have it out for each other. What elevates it to a hate crime is the use of racial stereotypes.

When you throw cotton balls and whip a black student it make you a fucking racist! Jesus fucking christ sometimes I just can't with the peas!

Who keeps marking this thread politics? 1. Bullies throw cupcakes at overweight student and put a scale in front of her: “Monstrous!” 2. Bullies bark at unattractive student and cover her face: “Heartbreaking!” 3. Bullies throw cotton at Black student and whip him: “Political!” (Bonus: “How divisive and traumatic to the students to discuss racism in this context. It will make them feel bad. Let’s pass a law punishing teachers/schools.”

Who keeps marking this thread politics? Someone who doesn't want to worry her pretty head about these ugly things. Someone who wants to cover her ears and cover her eyes from what some people go through in this world while she skates through singing "la la la..."

And for every one that gets recorded and goes viral, there are probably hundreds that no one sees, or worse, just turn a blind eye to. I read this a day after the story of middle schoolers in North Carolina having mocking slave auctions. How are these kinds of things still happening in 2022?? It's real gross.
