We attended a casual catered dinner at a friends house. We arrived at 5:00 and the food was already set out buffet style and people were eating. It was Mexican tacos, fajitas, rice, beans, etc. No warming dishes. It was just set out in foil pans on the counter.
It was way too much food for our group of 16. At least a third left when folks started to depart around 7:30. The host was encouraging folks to take leftovers home. So many said yes.
There is no way I would ever eat any of it after it had been sitting out on a counter for 2.5 hours and then + the travel time to get home.
How about you? Am I being too conservative?

To me it's the same as sitting down to a holiday dinner with family and everything being served in bowls and on platters that is out in the open not being kept warm or cold. Leftovers get wrapped up and put in the fridge or taken home by others.
I however wouldnt take home catering like that with so many different people involved. Family? Yes. A bunch of people I dont know well? Nope.

I would not have taken any leftovers.
My parents recently went to a dinner party where they were all served leftovers from an event the hostess had the night before. It was very obvious from the way the platters were presented, and she had posted photos of the food from her event on Facebook. My mom was horrified.

No, I wouldn't have taken any home either. Just not worth it. If i were at a family event and leftovers were fairly quickly refrigerated I would take some home.

Yes I’d probably have taken some home home and eaten the next day or two then tossed. Inside on a counter being different then potato salad in 90+ heat outside at a picnic. But I’m pretty liberal with food within a few days of origination.

At school first lunch is 10:20 and last lunch is 12:45 so when we have food days stuff is sitting out for over 2 1/2 hours. A lot of times stuff is in crockpots and plugged in, but not always. I wouldn’t have taken any leftovers, but mostly because I just wouldn’t want them.

The danger zone for food is 40-140 and I would not sit food that had been in the danger zone for almost 4+ hours. Hard pass.
That means cold food would have to be kept at 40 or below, and hot food needed to be held hot at 140 or higher. Not to mention, rice is a potentially hazardous food, as are tomatoes.
Will I be fine if I ignored the health code? Sure. Have I eaten a pizza that has sat out all night the next day? Yup.
But now that I know what I do about food handling I just can't bring myself to do it.

Another 'oh hell no" here. There's a lady here who recently posted about her husband dying from septic shock after after eating leftovers, and this teen had his legs amputated Most people who eat food contaminated by bacteria will just get sick - vomiting and diarrhoea, not everyone develops septic shock, BUT it can happen, and I don't plan to roll the dice and find out. You might be fine, but it's not worth the risk. The worst possible risk if room temperature food, and the situation in the OP is just that.

I'm a hard no as well. Initially it was because I just don't like that kind of food enough to have it for leftovers (I'm not sure I'd have been able to manage it the first time, tbh), but reading pjaye's post also gives me pause. I have always been a wee bit more liberal when it comes to these things, at least when it's just me.

Easily would have taken food and not really thought anything of it. But I admit to being much more forgiving about what I eat compared to what I see here. So one day that might bite me in the butt. 😬😄😆. Heck, on a holiday like Thanksgiving I am sure that food at our own house may be out for a couple of hours before people start cleaning up and putting it away.

All depends on how warm it was where the food was left out and how large the gathering was. And how nice the food was to start with. However, for that type of food, probably not because, well, it's cheap enough anyway. For something more than that, then I may have done.

If peoplenwere already eating at 5, then the food was probably out by 430 if not earlier. 730 woukd be 3 hours so well out of the safe zone. Not a chance in hell would I eat that. At dh's cousin's grad party, they served ChiChi's. At sone point, the sterno went out under the chicken. When it was discovered, the sterno was replaced and people continued to eat- this was far, far less than 3 hours. And half the party ended up with food poisoning.
