“The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences met Friday morning to discuss the consequences for actor Will Smith following his slap of presenter Chris Rock during the 94th Oscars telecast, and voted to ban Smith from all Academy events including the Oscars for 10 years. Smith, who resigned from the Academy last week, replied soon after in a statement, saying “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.” variety.com/2022/awards/news/oscars-will-smith-consequences-chris-rock-1235228010/But can he still be nominated and win? If so, there is no punishment there.

If so, there is no punishment there. Of course there's a punishment there - he cannot attend any ancillary or primary events for the next 10 years. If he wins, he can't be present to accept - effectively depriving him of that platform. His attendance - or lack thereof - has nothing to do with the fact that he is still a participating figure in the movie business. If he makes a great movie, he should still be eligible to be nominated. God, did everyone get this freaked out of the antics of Oliver Stone or Roman Polanski or Woody Allen? All guilty of far worse actions and behaviors . . . I remember the Academy and lots of high ranking actors rallying to Roman's defense, and Woody's as well. But Will and his slap . . . Hollywood. It's a crazy place. Pea-Land as well.
