That is total bullshit. I hope he is arrested for assault. frankly they should have escorted him out immediately.

I had the TV on while I was talking on the phone to my son. We both saw the punch but wasn't sure if it was real or not, then like everyone else, the TV glitched. I am so disappointed in Will Smith.

But not to Chris Rock. I think he's more worried about his happy go lucky persona now being marred. He quickly mentioned "a lot going on" but you still cannot assault someone like that.

Called to god and he’s so overwhelmed. Can you say Hollywood privilege? This is why people say actors and Hollywood are so out of touch. I normally like Will, but this leaves a bad taste. Yea. No apology to Chris says it all.

The joke Chris Rock said was completely uncalled for , you don't mock people for things like alopecia. Will Smith should have risen above though and handled it differently.
The whole situation is just odd. Clearly the audience and such were ok with Will Smith. Wonder what kind of reception Chris Rock would have gotten.
Amy is damn funny.

An offensive joke shouldn’t be dismissed to provoke assault anymore then anything else a victim says that “provokes” violence. It’s disgusting.

I think there is history with them .
Chris made the “Good Hair” documentary and iirc a lot of AA women were upset he told their stories. I remember watching an Oprah show about it.
I *think* Jada was one of the women who spoke out against him..so the joke about GIVJane felt especially below the belt, however IDK if Chris even knew Jada has that kind of alopecia. (not the autoimmune disease kind)

So it sounds like they (Jada and Will) were already on edge because earlier in the evening a joke was made about their marriage? Yes, Regina Hall was rounding up single men and made an awkward joke that Jada said it was ok for Will to come on stage even though he’s married.

Bad joke.
Smith’s overreaction was uncalled for.
The speech was even worse. “I want to be a vessel of love” after assaulting Rock on live tv.
Not a fan of normalizing violence and then delivering a line on defending family and you do crazy things for love (classic abuse line)

That was so shocking and upsetting. WTF Will behave in public. Beef with the guy after. Shameful and embarrassing in front of the world. @oh yvonne: You always make sense! ITA!!!!!!! At first, Will Smith laughed at the joke. Then he walked up and punched Chris Rock for making the joke about his wife. It didn't end there. Will Smith went back to his seat and continued on with shouting profanities at Chris Rock (all during the live Oscars!), and then goes on to accept an award (and cry and speak as though he's living a God-like life? ??).
Will Smith showed his true colors. He's a freakin' entitled bully who can't hold it together enough to address his AFTER the show! Assaulting a comedian for making a joke about your wife is just uncalled for and it's an upsetting criminal act that we all saw.
To the other actors who seemingly supported Will Smith after this brutality happened: THIS WAS WRONG!!!!!!!

I'm not a Chris Rock fan. Generally I find his humour crass. In my opinion, his joke tonight was less offensive and more lame. She has alopecia not a life threatening illness. She chose to shave her head.
Whether Will Smith was offended or not he should've turned the other cheek. Behave like a civilised adult not a child engaging in a violent temper tantrum. I don't care what's going on in his life,it's simply an excuse to deflect from the fact that he chose to assault another human being.
The moment he took the stage security should've been there, let alone after the assault. I get so sick of living in a world that allows violent behaviour by excusing it. This man should not be on stage giving some rambling insane apology accepting an award for best actor and instead should be in the back of a black and white being mirandized. (sigh)

Can someone do an idiots explanation of the bad joke for me please? I'm obviously missing why Jada/Will were so offended by the mention of GI Jane.

I actually watched (for once). What a mess. Just goes to show celebrities are not immune from being emotionally on edge, as so many others in the world are after the last two years. And no, I'm not in any way justifying WS's actions.
