The joke Chris Rock said was completely uncalled for , you don't mock people for things like alopecia. Will Smith should have risen above though and handled it differently. Can someone do an idiots explanation of the bad joke for me please? I'm obviously missing why Jada/Will were so offended by the mention of GI Jane. For the movie GI Jane Demi Moore shaved her head. Jada shaved her head rather then fight with the alopecia.

I'm not a Chris Rock fan. Generally I find his humour crass. In my opinion, his joke tonight was less offensive and more lame. She has alopecia not a life threatening illness. She chose to shave her head. Whether Will Smith was offended or not be should've turned the other cheek. Behave like a civilised adult not a child engaging in a violent temper tantrum. I don't care what's going on in his life,it's simply ahh excuse to deflect from the fact that he chose to assault another human being. The moment he took the stage security should've been there, let alone after the assault. I get so sick of living in a world that allows violent behaviour by excusing it. This man should not be on stage giving some rambling insane apology accepting an award for best actor and instead should be in the back of a black and white being mirandized. (sigh) It may not be life threatening but it is very stigmatizing for people dealing with it. I have family that have visible physical disabilities that are not life threatening. I would be severely pissed if someone made a joke about it in front of me. I absolutely would not assault anyone, but I guarantee they would get an earful. I have a good friend with alopecia and she is.incredily sensitive about it. It is very difficult for her to feel attractive (for herself -her husband never makes her feel less then beautiful) and self confident. It may seem insignificant to some people, but it is very stigmatizing to her.

As a result she's chosen to shave her head. Chris Rock may or may not know this. He made the GI Jane joke. Will Smith reacted to the joke by laughing and then rushing on stage to punch Chris, leave the stage and scream profanities at Chris. Security did nothing and the audience appears to support Will.

Will certainly has the support of a lot of people. Can you imagine what would have happened if Chris had hit Will? He would have been pulled off the stage within minutes and probably arrested for assault.

I thought it must have been some reference to her sleeping with other men (which she herself has talked about) for him to get so bent out of shape. Lots of bald men around who have various types of hair loss, and lots of jokes have been made about that. Sure it's on the tasteless list with all the other 'jokes' about bodies, but it's hardly worth that reaction.

Since when has Jada had alopecia? For someone who’s had hundreds of hairstyles, long and short, over the years, why now is this alopecia thing such a big deal?

Because Rock was poking fun of the fact that between her green dress and her shaved head, she looked like GI Jane. But Smith was enraged because his wife has alopecia. It seemed like a crass joke at the expense of someone with a justified illness.

But I will add that I can’t imagine the rage I would feel if, after watching my husband having to deal with and come to terms with something that tore him up like this, someone humiliated him about it, especially in such a public sphere. I would be/feel apocalyptic. He absolutely should have taken a moment to calm down and make a different decision, and he should be charged with assault.

Any bets on if he will be charged with assault?
Im thinking no.
Edited to add: looking at google, it looks like there could be lesser charges he could be charged with instead of assault. But who knows how this will shake out.

God bless Liza. Ok I never even heard of Koda. But the audience cheering in sign language is so moving! I've seen this 4 times. I love this movie so much and so happy it won!! I watched when it was first released on Apple and I swear every person I've come across I practically force them to promise me that they'll watch it

Yeah, that’s your choice, but the original scar wasn’t. Just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

As a white woman, I am not in any way knowledgeable enough to speak about it, but I'm aware that there are cultural, identity and other issues around hair for many Black women that could make this situation - teasing Jada about her baldness - more fraught than many of us may understand.
Will was definitely in the wrong but assault charges are overkill in this situation IMO.

I just don't think dismissing the "joke" is ok either. Chris Rock was wrong to make that joke. Will Smith was wrong to punch/hit Chris Rock. Both things can be true.

Is it up to the person he assaulted or the authorities? Honestly, I am not sure. Me either. Honestly, if Chris had no idea why she shaved her head I can perhaps see him choosing not to press charges. I know he’s a comedian and roasting someone can be funny when done appropriately. But, to me, this was vile and I hope that he sincerely apologizes to her. (Eta: There is a huge difference between the stigma for men and women and hair loss.) But Will definitely owes him an apology as well. Again, I can identify with Will’s emotions and I can see why he didn’t in the moment. But it is definitely warranted, as is a very public statement about the importance of not choosing violence.

Not ok in any context except self defense of imminent harm. If Jada was so upset why didn’t she march up there and hit Chris Rock then? This is male violence and shouldn’t be being justified and excused let alone getting thunderous applause.

I lived totally bald for about a year during chemo. I know how traumatizing it is, but if my DH had punched someone and then yelled obscenities at them, especially in such a public setting, I would have been mortified. It was a completely inappropriate response. Chris Rock has always been over the line and what a horrible joke for him to make. I have lost respect for all of them.

Frankly, I was more taken aback by the fact one of the hosts was allowed to feel up a group of men on stage and everyone was fine with it. If it had been the other way around, the world woulda lost their collective minds.
I think Chris Rock and Will Smith both acted like complete tools.

I was thoroughly disgusted with WS's behavior and don't think he redeemed himself with his acceptance speech. Nothing justifies his actions.
LAPD said Chris Rock isn't pressing charges.

It was a completely inappropriate response. Chris Rock has always been over the line and what a horrible joke for him to make. I have lost respect for all of them. I could've written this word for word. I lost my hair after every round of chemo I've done. It's grown back every time, but much thinner and finer also every time. It sounds vain, it is vain, but losing my hair has been (for me) one of the most difficult parts of having cancer. Losing my hair not only looked horrible but was, in my mind at least, a huge neon sign screaming "hey look at me,see how sick I am". People did look, some stared. One lady asked outright what type of cancer I have and then explained that she's a breast cancer survivor. Nobody made jokes. But had they done so? Both my husband and I would've been upset. We would've walked away, probably commented to one another about what an ass the person was. Had my husband assaulted the person though I would've been embarrassed. I would've been angry and disappointed in my husband. Violence is not the answer. The joke was lame. He shouldn't have made the joke, especially if he's aware of the reason she shaves her head. But to behave like an animal, punching someone in the face and then screaming profanities, is inexcusable. The reaction was over the top, disproportionate to what was said and could've been handled in private. Again violence is not the answer.
