I used to be a really big fan of Will Smith. It feels like he’s going the way of Tom Cruise. Losing touch with what a normal life is like, and what normal behavior might be. Turning into an entitled twat.
Such a bummer.

I'm not a Chris Rock fan. Generally I find his humour crass. In my opinion, his joke tonight was less offensive and more lame. She has alopecia not a life threatening illness. She chose to shave her head. Whether Will Smith was offended or not be should've turned the other cheek. Behave like a civilised adult not a child engaging in a violent temper tantrum. I don't care what's going on in his life,it's simply ahh excuse to deflect from the fact that he chose to assault another human being. The moment he took the stage security should've been there, let alone after the assault. I get so sick of living in a world that allows violent behaviour by excusing it. This man should not be on stage giving some rambling insane apology accepting an award for best actor and instead should be in the back of a black and white being mirandized. (sigh) It may not be life threatening but it is very stigmatizing for people dealing with it. I have family that have visible physical disabilities that are not life threatening. I would be severely pissed if someone made a joke about it in front of me. I absolutely would not assault anyone, but I guarantee they would get an earful. I have a good friend with alopecia and she is.incredily sensitive about it. It is very difficult for her to feel attractive (for herself -her husband never makes her feel less then beautiful) and self confident. It may seem insignificant to some people, but it is very stigmatizing to her. Will Smith absolutely should not have assaulted Chris Rock. However, as someone who has Alopecia Universalis it is a disease that is more mentally challenging than physically but is very stigmatizing. Just think of all the threads, post, comments, commercials, and visuals that you see and hear everyday about beauty and hair, especially with women. Think about how many comments you make on any given day about your hair or about someone’s hair style. Alopecia is a disease that forces you to be grateful that if you have to have an incurable disease this is one of them as it is mostly superficial…but at the same time affects so many areas of life and causes so much stress and sadness. Most insurances will pay for wigs for chemo induced Alopecia but they will not for autoimmune Alopecia, so there may even be a financial burden for someone as good fitting /comfortable wigs are not cheap.

Do we know for a fact that Chris Rock knew about her alopecia? I'm sure the Smith's think every detail of their lives is of interest to everyone...but I doubt that's really the case. We've seen other black women at awards shows either bald or with very short hair, and they've always looked stunning and there's also women of all different races who have various wigs, extensions, weaves etc...it's reasonable to assume at an awards show those varying hairstyles are fashion statements and not due to (non life threatening) illness. Most insurances will pay for wigs for chemo induced Alopecia but they will not for autoimmune Alopecia, so there may even be a financial burden for someone as good fitting /comfortable wigs are not cheap. I'm sure Will & Jada combined make enough for her to have thousands of wigs if she wants them. It's really not a case of "poor Jada's insurance won't pay for her wig"...that's a long bow to draw here. Chris Rock wasn't commenting on an ordinary woman in the street. These are mega famous mega rich people at a lavish awards show to celebrate themselves...lets not lose sight of that.

Any bets on if he will be charged with assault? Im thinking no. Edited to add: looking at google, it looks like there could be lesser charges he could be charged with instead of assault. But who knows how this will shake out. LAPD said they’d investigate if asked and Chris Rock declined to press charges.

Thanks. So was just a reference to her shaved head? Then that is a massive over reaction. I thought it must have been some reference to her sleeping with other men (which she herself has talked about) for him to get so bent out of shape. Lots of bald men around who have various types of hair loss, and lots of jokes have been made about that. Sure it's on the tasteless list with all the other 'jokes' about bodies, but it's hardly worth that reaction. I don't think anyone here is condoning Will Smith's reaction. It was clearly wrong. I just don't think dismissing the "joke" is ok either. Chris Rock was wrong to make that joke. Will Smith was wrong to punch/hit Chris Rock. Both things can be true. It goes hand in hand either the mounds and mounds of disrespect men are showing against women. It needs to stop.

Absolutely agree and absolutely did not lose sight of this. I have dealt with Alopecia since I was 18 years old, I have thought about it a lot in my life. Hahaha. . I guess mine were more general comments , I should have kept my focus on just the Oscar situation.
I apologize, I was not reading your comment about bald men in reference to the rich and famous and award shows but just about bald jokes in general. Obviously I should have, as it was on the Oscar thread, but personal experiences sometimes redirects your focus. The stigma of bald women to bald men is very different and society’s view and obsession with women and hair is huge. I also think that he had no reason to make any ruckus over the joke on air. I got drawn into the whole thread because of the Alopecia, the Oscar part is just fluff. 😉😄

While I agree that violence is wrong and it should not have happened no matter what, since when is it ok to make fun of someone's medical condition? Chris Rock is an ass.

So no more comedy, or comedians? I’m not sure how you got that out of her comments. She was obviously speaking about the disrespect men show women, the part you didn’t include in your quoted post…not stopping comedy in general. I’m certain comedians are capable of being funny and respectful to women.

I’m certain comedians are capable of being funny and respectful to women. Many comedians are disrespectful to people In general, not just women. I personally don’t find a lot of what they say to be funny and don’t like that kind of humor, but I don’t see this as being sexist or gender specific. If this type of humor bothers you when women are the butt of the jokes, it should bother you when men are as well.

Will Smith was wrong to punch/hit Chris Rock. Both things can be true. It goes hand in hand either the mounds and mounds of disrespect men are showing against women. It needs to stop. Exactly! I don't condone what Will Smith did but this isn't the first time Chris Rock has taken a pot shot of Jada. It still doesn't make WS actions acceptable but people snap. It also makes Chris Rock a crass persons for doing what he did. The reference to the "GI Jane" was far more than just the fact that she had shaved her head because of her Alopecia, which was bad enough in itself - one doesn't make jokes about someone's medical conditions. The underlying general meaning of the saying/joke, and he isn't the first man to use the GI Jane joke, is that in the film "Jordan O'Neil", the first woman to undergo Navy Seal training, even outperforming many of her male counterparts was still forced to completely hide away her femininity which included shaving her hair off, to solidify her position as a Navy Sea. It comes down to the fact that some believe that women can't compete in what is generally considered, predominantly, to be a man's world on their personal merits without changing who they are or their appearance. It was an insulting "joke" to any woman that had a similar hairstyle whether it was medically forced upon them or not. If Chris Rock can't find enough material without having to insult women in general then IMO he's a pretty lame comedian.

Frankly, I was more taken aback by the fact one of the hosts was allowed to feel up a group of men on stage and everyone was fine with it. If it had been the other way around, the world woulda lost their collective minds. I think Chris Rock and Will Smith both acted like complete tools. The audience seemed to have the same reaction, as did I about the host feeling up the men. Most everyone they showed on camera seemed uncomfortable with that. I am assuming that was scripted and the men knew it was going to happen, but it was still awkward, not funny, and absolutely would not have been accepted if the genders were reversed. In general Wanda and Amy were very funny, Regina Hall was not.

Anybody else think it’s deliciously ironic that this played out on the stage of the annual masturbatory paean to Hollywood movies? Many of which have portrayed the idea of the mouthy jerk character getting his comeuppance when the handsome leading man pops him in the face?
(Variation One: long-suffering, testosterone-challenged nerdy male character instead of leading man. Way Too Popular Variation Two: either one of these trope characters do it in defense of a woman.)
In any case, audience has an “Atta, boy!” reaction and defended woman character falls for the man. Life? Art? Movies’ continued role in our f’d up gender training? Hopefully, people will see THIS reaction to outrage is not so heroic in real life - instead of just arguing about exactly HOW mouthy and jerky the mouthy jerk character was.

I’m certain comedians are capable of being funny and respectful to women. Yes I'm well aware of the disrespect men show women...and in this instance of comedy, it doesn't apply in my opinion. If a joke about the colour of a women's dress and her hairstyle are disrespectful to women...then by default they also are to men. If comedians can't make those types of jokes, then pretty soon most things are off the table. The more I talk & think about it...the more I get convinced that Chris Rock said nothing wrong. I didn't see GI Jane, but from what I gather it was about a tough women who kept up with men in the army...how is saying a different woman could play that role an insult? And Demi sure didn't look bad in that role, she looked great., strong & fit. I'm thinking calling his wife tough insulted Will's masculinity and he felt he had to prove he was still the man in that house. I don't think it has anything to do with protecting his wife at all. If anyone was toxic in this interchange...it's Will. He's the one who needs the lesson in what is disrespectful to women...women don't need "protecting" by him.

I'm seeing some feedback on some areas of social media saying white women need to stay out of the conversation and conjecture. If you're interested, find Glennon Doyle on Instagram. I'm trying to 'listen and learn'. I imagine we'll get a bigger picture as the days pass.

She responded to the criticisms in her edit of the original post and left the comments up at the request of black women giving black voices a place to speak. Many also referred to accounts to follow. I know she's polarizing, but she didn't shut down when faced with criticism and that says a lot.

Okay this whole white women need to stay out of the conversation has got to stop.
The Oscars has an international live audience. Its for EVERYONE. The assault was bad enough, but this isn't MTV awards or Hip Hop awards where the core audience is a bunch of kids and something like that would be almost expected there.
That attitude sucks and is ruining every good thing that's left. Enough with the violence.

According to her, on Twitter, she did delete and then restored it because taking it down also removed all of the responses, effectively silencing a lot of Black women who explained why she should sit this one out. I respect that she restored it, but my point stands... her voice is not the one in this moment.

I mean, my jaw dropped and I folded my knees straight up into my chest with gut reactions that ran the gamut. What we can do is respect that there is a strong and valid flex from black voices. I'm trying to be quiet, listen and learn. Being open to criticism that may expand our world view doesn't ruin the good stuff. It brings eventual clarity to all stuff, good and bad. If my black friends are putting a hand to my arm as a gentle warning, I tend to take notice and be respectful. On an unrelated, but tangential example, I often with that men, white ones in particular, would take a seat and listen to women in spaces men don't belong in or understand.

One part deals with black women’s struggle with alopecia and uses Jada as an example.

Of course we can shut up and yield the floor sometimes. In this case, that shutting up would be about this particular offense - the provocation which has a distinct cultural overtone. I still think all women should be able to join a discussion about men choosing to defend them through violence. And I think everybody should be able to join the conversation about violence as a response to insult. Otherwise, we end up with a spreadsheet of verbal insults that deserve or don’t deserve violence in response. (And as referenced upthread, this can be applied to domestic violence, not just “Look at me defending my woman” violence.)

What if it was Amy Schumer that he slapped? Would it not be ok because she is a woman?
What if it was just someone from the audience ( a nobody) that did this?
Security should have escorted him out immediately.

Who knows why Will decided last night was the last straw? However, it was completely wrong for it to play out the way he chose.
