I know that most of you are done, done, done, and probably even have your refund deposited by now. Up until 3 years ago I had them done for me. They really aren't that hard to do, so I like saving the $$$ I was paying my accountant to do them. I don't get all my paperwork in hand every year until usually about 3/10, so I haven't procrasinated TOO much. But seriously. I need to stop putting off chores like this. Help me feel a little better. Who else hasn't started their taxes yet either? And if I can't confirm that I've finished in a few hours, would someone please provide a virtual "dressing down" to me? Thanks  ETA and hour later: Well FML. TT does not want to connect to one of my financial institutions. Of course it's the one that matters most, sigh. Rather than migrating things over manually, I'm going to try again later today. It wants to connect, and I changed my PW just to be sure that wasn't the issue, but the wheel just goes round and round and round. The best laid plans have been foiled again..... |

My DH waits until the last minute every year. He does them himself and with TurboTax it is so easy but he always puts it off. So yeah he hasn't even thought about it.

Well, I dropped everything off at the accountant last week but I have no idea of the status of things. But this is also the longest I have ever waited to get the information to her so we're kind of in the same boat!

This is the first time in a while we have gotten a substantial refund so we did them early. But usually we either owe a little bit or break even so we are never in a rush, we wait until the last minute.

Help me feel a little better. Who else hasn't started their taxes yet either? I am doing mine tomorrow through AARP..they set up at our local Senior Center and it's free. Anyone over 55 can have them done (I'm 63) |

Nope, I'm on the bench with you. I have not done mine yet either. I've had all my stuff together since February and they only take me about 30-45 minutes to do. I just HATE doing them.
I was going to do them weekend before last and then I was sick the whole time. This past weekend I had too much going on. I have got to do them this weekend!

I was going to do them myself this year as well and kept putting it off. I finally decided it was worth $300 for someone else to do them, so I gave our accountant everything and she just finished them last week. Latest ever.

My DH prides himself on waiting until the deadline.
I didn't realize that you could get them done for free if you're 55 and a member of AARP. I'm in AARP, but not 55 yet. I will happily turn over the reins if I can jerk them away from DH. He stresses me out.

I used to love doing them for us and our parents when we were young and still living in Canada. I thought it was fun and our taxes were very simple. since moving to the USA over 3 decades ago, I have never done them. DH's consulting made them quite complicated so we've paid $$ for a pro to do them for some time now. Things are a little simpler now and DH did them for the first time on Sunday using TurboTax. YOU CAN DO IT, LAUREN!!! You WILL do it! And you'll feel so good when they're done!~!!

We always do ours in February. BUT, my best friend, when she was married to her first husband, would go nuts every year. He would wait until April 15th then bitch and moan while he worked on them. It's not like they owned a business or rental property so it was pretty straight forward but it made her nuts.
I don't know if they do this up here but in our former town they would have postal employees stand in front of the main post office until midnight collecting the returns. I can't even imagine.

I started ours and I saw how much we will owe (due to a disbursement) so there is no hurry to complete them before April 18. I'll file and send the money the week before that though.

In my defense, I already have all my documents pulled together by category and have imported most of it. Will have it done by the weekend for DH to go over. Are you done yet?  We were part of a huge data breach several years ago and we’re advised to do our taxes early. Since we get a substantial refund, we do them in February, as soon as the info is available. (for several reasons, we are riding with that until next year) I know they were saying that it will take quite a while to get the deposit, but I think it took less than 2 weeks. You can do it! |

Many years ago, I asked the company CPA to do them, and told her I expected to pay her. She worked after hours for a tax company so I wanted her to know up front that I was not asking for a free task. I gave her the paperwork at the end of January (when I got all the annual reports). She put it off and put it off....finally around the 14th she told me she was filling out the papers for an extension. I think she would never give me the documents. Anyway at 10 PM on April 14th I was in a HUGE line of cars at the late post office in DFW area turning in the envelope. I was beyond angry...beyond livid. I finally got the report etc. in August when the extension was due. By then she said she didn't think I should pay her....and I was in agreement. I can't remember, but I think I insisted on paying as I knew she worked a second job.
I am the kind of person who turns things in the day before they are due, and she sent me over the edge with her delays.
We filed ours March 8th. We paid H&R Block, and a friend who works there was our "agent." We are getting a refund.
I don't expect to see the refund in our checking account until June.

We literally just did ours this weekend. We usually wait until April, so I figure we are ahead of the game. We rarely get a refund, which is probably why we procrastinate.

I'm in the same boat, well was until Monday. I work for a CPA firm and as part of our benefits work does our taxes. Well the person that's been assigned to me the last 3 years procrastinates so much and won't respond to any emails/calls/im's for updates. Was told they would be done by 3/21 (after our first 3.15 tax deadline), which is fine, but he'd had the info since the end of January. Ended up having to go to HR on Monday and magically within minutes I had my final documents. I have never been this late in filing. I am usually done by beginning of Feb. If they can't/won't assign me someone else next year I may just go back to doing them myself.
Question - how long does it usually take to get your refund this late in the season? It's set for direct deposit. I can see both state/fed have been received as of Monday afternoon.

I have to add, I did used to owe, so of course I didn't actually file until the last minute. One year, about 8-9 years ago I owed a very high amount, boy did that hurt! Over the last few years I've changed withholding on some distributions so that I get under $2k, usually closer to $1k back. MUCH HAPPIER.
And, in my update in my OP you'll see that my financial institution and TT are not playing well today, grrrrr. So, it's being put off till later today or tomorrow morning. UGH.

My parents used to purposefully wait to drop theirs off at the at the deadline at the main post office in Austin just so they could people watch. I got a surprise early this year when I mentioned something about our taxes, watching for paperwork in the mail or something and he mentioned he filed them the week before. Dude, really? Legal document with my (electronic) signature and all. MichyM Isn’t that always the way of it? You finally get it in your mind to get something done and some issue pops up. I hope they resolve it quickly! |
