My Mom and Stepdad got their front yard done about 5-6 years ago. They are in San Diego. It is beautiful and very realistic looking. It’s not “bright green”. It has green and a yellowish green color to it to make it look more realistic. It looks nothing like astroturf. They have a rock boarder. On the two front corners near the street they have 2 palm trees that have been there since I was a kid. At the top of the yard in front of the house they have flowering plants in pots, a pepper tree that shades the front of the house and attracts bees. I’ve been there when it was really hot and was able to walk on it bare footed with no issues of it being too hot. My stepdad “sweeps” the leaves and berries from the pepper tree up. Mom has passed so I can’t ask her what the brand is and Joe unfortunately now has dementia so it is harder for him to remember stuff like that, but it’s really nice, very realistic and it was quite pricey, but watering was super expensive too. Their’s does not get weeds through it.

We were in a drought in the early 2000’s and we had the front lawn replaced with artificial grass.
It has been great, still looks good and is not hot to walk on. I would put it in again as it saves water and time not having to mow and everything else it takes to have a lovely green lawn.
couldn’t tell you how much it cost now but being in Australia it wouldn’t relate to overseas peas. If looking at installing this remember that “you get what you pay for” and this is a good example because the cheapest won’t be the best.

We stayed at a place last summer with some artificial grass. It was burning hot to walk on, almost hotter than the concrete. So be careful what kind you get.

We are moving gradually to a lawn of native plants and ground covers that don’t require watering. Our backyard is mostly clover at this point. I love it. Self-fertilizing, doesn’t need regular watering, and it’s softer to walk in than grass. Also dog urine doesn’t cause it to brown and it’s not susceptible to pests. When it flowers, it’s good for pollinators.
To me, this is preferable to putting down fake plastic grass, no matter how nice. I would not want that hot plastic that has to be watered down after the dogs go. Just personal preference. And, bunnies like it (I consider that a bonus, YMMV).
