We were vacationing on North Carolina's Outer Banks this week. Decided to go ahead and leave early due to Hurricane Arthur. Anyone ever ride out a hurricane while on vacation? Would you do it again?

Not on vacation, but I live in Florida and have been through a slew of them...including at least two that took out my power for at least week. It can be the most awesome and amazing thing you will ever experience.
My only advise is if you stay in the path, you have a "kit" on hand that includes the basics-food that doesn't require preparation/refrigeration, candles and matches, lots of water and bleach. You should make sure that you are prepared to be on your own and able to take care of your self for at least three days, five is better. It can that many days for FEMA to get to you.
ETA: I thought I should probably define what I meant by "awesome." I don't mean awesome like it is used colloquially, but rather awesome as truly "awe inspiring." The power that is with in a true storm can humble you and make you feel so small. It is not something to be taken lightly at all.

Never on vacation. I'm originally from southeast Texas right on the Gulf of Mexico so I have stayed through all of them that came. When I lived in Norfolk I lived right on the water and we had a hurricane come through...I left for that but it was mostly just a good excuse to take a trip back to Tx.

I've ridden out quite a few, but never while on vacation. I would probably leave early, too. Riding them out isn't vacation-like at all. I'm sorry your trip had to be cut short

Once, back in 1976, we were camping on Martha's Vineyard when a hurricane came up the coast. We had to move into a hotel room and pack away our tent in the camp ground's storage facility. The wasn't life threatening, but folks were worried about windows being blown out. The drawbridges to the harbors were opening all day long, blocking traffic so boats could get to safety. I remember waking up at 2 in the morning just at the worst of the storm hit and watching the wind blow across the water from our hotel window.
The funniest thing was after the storm passed. My sister and a friend of ours and I were walking along South Beach just after the sun had set, looking for shells that the storm surge may have thrown up, when we saw a hand sticking up out of the sand. Just a hand. Totally freaked us out. Took a few minutes for one of us to get up the nerve to run up and kick it (we were too afraid to touch it). Yup, you guessed it, it was a rubber glove someone had filled with sand and stuck in the sand. We filled it back up with sand and stuck it up again to freak out the next people.

I don't like storms so I would not. Not my idea of a vacation. Sorry your vacation was cut short!

Ugh, I'm sorry. Right before hurricane Bob, my mom's friends drove 300 miles to vacation on Cape Cod one year and were turned away at the bridge to the Cape.
My MIL flew into NC last night, but she's in Raleigh, so hopefully things won't be too bad that far inland.

I grew up in Southeast Texas, on the Gulf and yes, we've stayed home for some. Not what I would want to do on vacation!

So sorry your vaca was interrupted. What a bummer! We just came back from Nags Head (June 14-21). We had wonderful weather but the rental was on stilts and would sway in 35mi winds! I just wondered to my family how much that house would be swaying this week.

We've been on vacation in Florida during a hurricane - totally not on my original itinerary! We're from the UK and had to ride it out!
Sorry your vacation was cut short

That is a big bummer. We stayed on the Outer Banks last summer and I thought it would be really scary to be there during a hurricane. The beach houses are so exposed. I would have totally turned tail and gotten the heck outta there!

I live in Florida so we deal with hurricanes every year but back in 05 Wilma followed us on our cruise making several of our excursions have to be cancelled and our ship rerouted. Got back home and actually got hit with Wilma...no power for 3 weeks..thank god for generators !

Also lived on the TX Gulf Coast. Had been through a few hurricanes. There is no way I would stay if I was on a vacation. Especially if I didn't own the rental home (and have to close it up/prepare it for a storm).

Having been through various storms over the years, it probably isn't worth it to stay, unless it is going to be a very fast moving Cat 1. Anything higher will take at least a day or two (and sometimes months or years) for the area to get back to normal after the storm.
I was in Atlanta for the ice storm earlier in the year. The hotel opened an extra restaurant, but hanging out in the hotel isn't a lot of fun.

I'm sorry your vacation was cut short - that stinks.
I've been through big thunderstorms at the beach where the winds shook the house and the waves came all the way up to the beach. It was truly impressive & made me very glad that I wasn't there during a hurricane.

Yuck.. leaving is the best thing to do. I have never ridden one out on vacation but I have ridden many out in Cayman.. and even those I left for were spent mainly watching the weather channel to figure out If I was going to have a home to go back to.

We were on the OBX years ago, and had to evacuate. How dumb were we that we only went to Elizabeth City, which is only 50 miles away. And I live in NC, so I should have known better. It turned out to be a minor hurricane, so we were able to come back to our rental, to gorgeous weather.

Got back home and actually got hit with Wilma...no power for 3 weeks..thank god for generators ! Well I was very close to my due date when Wilma hit so I remember that storm very well. I was in south Florida and was a bit worried about going into labor but all was well (did have damage to our fence and pool screen, etc.) and my daughter was born a week later. It was a bit of a nightmare for people trying to visit me in the hospital as most of the county was still without power so most traffic lights were not working. I was lucky that we got power back at our house only 3 days after the storm. There were other women at the hospital going home with newborns to homes with no power. I can't even imagine. Then again I can since my family and I survived Hurricane Andrew in Homestead so I know the damage a storm can do. Sorry OP that you're having to cut your vacation short - that sucks.

We just got home from camping. Yesterday, I got an alert on my phone: "Tornado in area. Take cover now". Yikes! Not the thing you want to see camping. Plus it was hailing. In July. So weird. Thankfully is passed us but we are home now and due for a very wet 4th.

I've never had to ride out a hurricane in OBX but I know that there's only a few ways to get on and off OBX. I imagine if you wait too long you might not be able to get out!
Sorry it ruined your vacation but at least you're safe!

Oh, that stinks that you had to leave early. We were just in the OBX at the beginning of June and there was lots of talk about what would happen there in severe weather. Having been there and seeing how hard it would be to get out if things got really serious, I think you made the right choice.

If I was on vacation and a hurricane was headed my way I'd pack my stuff and GTFO. Even a low category storm has the potential to knock power out and even disrupt the water supply. It's bad enough to deal with that in familiar and comfortable surroundings, having to wait it out in a hotel would be so much worse I would think.

We were on St Marteen when Hurricane Bertha struck. It was a mess. Sateliite dishes floating in the ocean, etc. Went swimming three days after and got stung by jellyfish which were blown in by the storm. I ended up in hospital because of that. That was a very interesting vacation.

I would ride this one out. Cat 1 isn't horrible enough to scare me. I've been in some nasty hurricanes though.

Not while on vacation but after living in both Louisiana and Florida, I've ridden dozens of them out. We're pretty well prepared with emergency supplies and a generator
