Our area got hit with the really bad storms the other day. We ended up loosing power for 24 hours. Not the worst, there are lots of people that have had it worse, and there are still people in the area that don't have power, and might not for another 2-4 days. We got water in our basement. Again, not as bad as some, but bad enough. Have a company coming out today to start water damage cleanup: suction out carpet, pull up carpet, etc. And, it's costing us a pretty penny. This morning, I go to sit down at our kitchen table, and there's a pretty big puddle of water on the floor. I thought the dog peed. Nope, clear water, and then I look up, our ceiling is leaking. We have a 2 story, and there's no water on the flooring anywhere upstairs; we think it's the pipes from our bathroom. The water was there after DH and then I took a shower. So now we have that problem to deal with. The best part? We're leaving for vacation tomorrow. Give me strength. Update: Just thought I'd share how the rest of this went down. The company we had clean up the basement did a great job, it was dried out when we got back. Now we have to get a company to relay the carpet and then clean. The kitchen leak was from the faucet in our tub. Been replaced. Leave for vacation, and within 2 days of being gone our credit card was compromised. VISA shut it down. Thank gawd we have a backup we only use in case of emergency, and being out of town was the emergency to use it. Come back from vacation and I have some nasty stomach bug. I was sick for 3-4 days. Now, our DirecTv is out. They're here now fixing it, but it's been a couple of days where 95% of the channels weren't working. Seriously...not the best couple of weeks, huh?

so sorry devildog! I can somewhat relate...it just won't stop raining in Iowa and we know about 5 different families that ended up with flooded basements. My suggestion - just drink extra on vacation and don't forget the tylenol! Hang in there!

It's really a sickening feeling. When I drive around our area there are yards that are filled with big, old fallen trees that are either in their yard, on their house, or across power lines. People have furniture, rolled up carpet, etc. at the driveways I'm assuming from water damage. The family directly across the street from us was out of town, and ended up having water 6" deep in the basement.
I can't even imagine living in a hurricane area, or in the path of a tornado.
It'll be fine, but a big cold frothy pink "something" with an umbrella is sounding pretty damn good right about now.

Oh no! So sorry. We had a basement that flooded a few times. We finally found 3 drains in front of the house that was clogged. As long as those drains are clear, our basement has not flooded. Enjoy vacation!

I'm sorry!
That storm was really something. So scary. I hope the pipe problem is unexpectedly simple (and cheap) to fix!

Yea... I'm starting to feel like there's mildew growing in all the corners of my house. Think of it this way....the restoration company can do all the heavy lifting while you kick back on vacation and you come home to fresh flooring and paint. Will your homeowner's insurance kick in? Good luck and enjoy your vacation!

Ugh...hate that feeling when one little thing happens, and then everything else just snowballs on from there. Hope they are able to get you fixed up and back to normal soon.
Not sure which storms you had, but I'm in Northern Indiana and we had really bad ones the other night too. I've been without power since Tues am and it's very frustrating :-) And its so weird because our area doesn't usually get much damage or lose power, this time we got it all. There were crews working in my neighborhood this morning, so hopefully it'll be back on by tonight.

Oh no, it has been raining like crazy around here (North Dakota). We actually put in a new battery back up sump pump after our power was out for four hours and we were getting a little nervous. I hope everything gets fixed quickly and you have a worry-free vacation.

Are you in derecho area? We had one here in Northern Virginia a couple of years ago. They are quite destructive. I hope you are able to have a worry-free vacation.

Yes, so true! Whenever you are going crazy dealing with one thing, all these other things come up. And of course just in time to ruin your vacation! My inlaws had had flooding in their basement and had to come home early from a trip to Spain to deal with it. And I think they had to cancel another vacation due to basement flooding. Yes, they travel a lot and live in PA (where it rains a lot). I hope you can make it to at least a few days of your vacation.

I swear my house hates me. The basement floods the day before every vacation. The last time we were on vacation my dad calls me and the first thing out of his mouth was, everything is fine. OH GOD! What now?!?!
My house was hit by lightening and we lost power in 1/2 the house and the smoke alarms shorted out and wouldn't stop beeping. He shut power off to the whole house til we got home. I came home, fixed the power etc. Went to clean the bathroom the next week and there was a 2 inch hole blown out of the wall behind the toilet. We are so lucky our house didn't burn to the dirt.

Will someone be checking on your house while you are gone?
