Unfortunately, I’m the dumbass in this scenario. I’ve done everything in my power to avoid Covid, fully vaccinated, always masked. We’re fairly certain DH got it at work, and shared. Thankfully, we were both recovering. I’m also relieved it was probably omicron, because it kicked my immunocompromised butt hard. My DH very, very rarely gets sick, I think it shocked him just how bad it was.
Last Friday, I had finally sweated out the worst of the high fevers, desperate for a shower at that point. Showered, everything’s good. Headed down the stairs, and I’m honestly still not sure the sequence of what occurred. And I feel like it’s one of those freak things you could never duplicate even if you tried. About 6 steps from the bottom stair, my foot slid in my sock weird, landed on the next step bent under my body. Thankfully, I knew I was going down and rolled to my shoulder and not my head hitting first.
Broke my ankle, with tendon damage to boot. Have surgery this week, various casts and boots to follow for a couple months. I think I’m still in a little disbelief that it happened, for every crazy weird medical problem I’ve had in my life, I’ve never broken a bone.
Im just so, so grateful for the vaccines. As I said I'm immunocompromised, DH is in excellent health but 51. We found out yesterday a 26 year old young man died from Covid who worked in my DH’s office. He was not vaccinated, this young man who had served his country and so much life yet to live

I feel like the sliding sock on a stair happened to another pea not that long ago, and it was also disastrous. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

Oh no!!! You are NOT a dumbass. I’ve slid down the stairs enough times that I try not to just wear socks - either barefoot or slippers for me when going up and down stairs.
I am so sorry and hope that your ankle surgery goes well. The up-side is that you need to rest and recover from COVID and now you will be forced to rest to also recover from your surgery.
Please take care of yourself! (((Hugs))) I am wishing you a speedy recovery.

Ouch! I did something very similar some time ago but not recovering from Covid though. Fortunately I was able to manage to land on my bum and did no lasting damage except my coccyx hurt for a number of days afterwards. Hope surgery goes well and you recover soon.

I got antsy and claustrophobic just reading about surgery and various casts and boots for several weeks. I would not be a good person with a broken bone and having to endure that.
I hope you recover fully and quickly!

I’m so sorry. That’s so painful on top of Covid recovery. Get yourself a wedge pillow to prop your ankle up and post-surgery ice behind your knee / it really does help keep the swelling down.

Ouch! I’m sorry that happened to you and hope you heal quickly and easily.
We just had our stairs refinished. I need to buy a runner for them before someone in my house does something like that.

Well that just sucks! Hope you recover quickly from both issues. Just another reason why I always wear shoes or slippers in my house. I do enough damage just trying to stay upright outside in the winter!

Ouch! I hope you heal quickly and uneventfully and hope neither one of you have any lasting Covid symptoms.
I'm also sorry about your DH's coworker...so sad.

Ouch! I haven't had Covid, but I have fallen down the stairs so I can relate to your feelings of disbelief, surprise, and irritation that it happened at all considering the number of times one goes up and down the stairs in one's home. I broke a few bones - collar, eye socket, and ribs, but none required setting in a cast at all. The ribs were the most painful and the eye socket was the most visible because it caused a lot of blood to pool in one eye and the tissues surrounding my eye. Lots of pretty colors in the bruising. The doctor said my collar bone could be repaired, but felt it wasn't really worth doing since it would not cause me any difficulty in movement. He said I would just be able to see a lack of balance between the two sides. It bothers me mentally, but not physically at all.
I'm sorry you will be experiencing so much hassle with the number of doctor visits to get your ankle right again. I'm also sorry that the 26-year old young man died. I imagine a vaccination could have prevented that death. I just hate that vaccinations became so political during this pandemic, making many refuse to get it, my own son included.

Oh my, that's rough, Hope you mend smoothly. My DD18 had her wisdom teeth removed last summer. She was in the bathroom and felt dizzy, so she hurried back to her room to lay down. She fell down and cut and bruised her eye/eyelid. I lectured her about sitting or laying down where you are when you feel dizzy or calling for help. I was in the next room. So she had a cut and a blackish eye, not too bad. She returns to work after another day at home and texts a few hours in and said she threw up. She had a concussion. Her teeth healed wonderfully, no swelling, hardly any pain. Wisdom teeth recovery dumbass edition.
