I have always loved teaching. But right now my passion is homeschooling my kids. I'm still teaching, just teaching my own children. I know how blessed I am to be able to stay home with them and I certainly don't take it for granted.
Here's how I look at it. I've only got my kids in my home for 18 years. And no one is more interested in their success, academic and otherwise, than I am. So it was easy for me to choose to homeschool them.
It's not easy in practice sometimes, though. I'm grateful that there are amazing resources both online and in our community to help make it easier for them and me. At the end of the day, I know I won't regret this time I spend investing in education.
Believe me, I know homeschooling is NOT for everyone. But I'm glad we made that choice. It's worked quite well for us.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....learning!! Going back to school would make me so happy. I love to learn. I love reading. I wish I could go back but my schedule in no way allows it.
Second is mentoring. I love to help people in any way I can. I seldom have the opportunity to do so, unfortunately.

I don't think it's possible for every single person to have a calling or passion. All I can do is make it through life. I don't have time or money to pursue what I feel is important. This is how I feel, but until you said it, I kind of didn't know it was even okay to say.

Those that don't feel they have a passion or calling:
I hear you saying that you are just struggling to make it through each day. I believe that the passion is inside you, but you are too overwhelmed to let it know how to get out. You are too busy just surviving.
Someone posted the following yesterday on FB before I saw this post. It's from a Christian pastor, but I believe you can take what you need out of it, Christian or not.
"There are four levels of living: 1. Survival 2. Stability 3. Success 4. Significance If a system can keep you focused on survival, you'll never have significance. Scarcity creates lack in your mind. The Kingdom of God gets rid of scarcity by telling you there's no limit...empowering you to create wealth." ~ Joel Brooks, Jr.
I would add to this: The awesome thing about wealth is that it gives you the power and freedom to move towards significance. Money is not the end in itself. But the money allows you to accomplish your dreams.

This Spring dh found a litter of abandoned kittens on the side of the road. They were about 3 weeks old and needed to be bottle fed and litter trained... the whole 9 yards. And I LOVED every sleepless moment.
So I guess I am a nurturer to my core. And if allowed, I would foster baby kittens or puppies year round.
Unfortunately, dh was not as fond of the process and won't let me. So, I will need to find another outlet for my love of nurturing.

I'm a full time caregiver. I do see success and significance in *small* ways. Once in a great while (these past 3 weeks) they even explode! There are things I do have a passion for but I have to be realistic. It's not the time or place for that to happen. Like another poster said her interests have ebbed and flowed. For a long time I have liked scrapbooking. I love reading. I like doing crafty things. I don't feel like there's a void in my life if I don't or am unable to pursue a "calling" or passion. I don't believe that quote. It's like the 70's feminist movement when women were told we could have it all. It is not possible. You have to prioritize. People do have limits and I'm not referring to wealth.

I think if you have found "THE THING" that really motivates you, then you are very lucky. But I think if you can find satisfaction in your daily life and interests, then you are also very lucky. There are lots of different ways to feel fulfilled. Like the poster above me, I think 'having it all' is a bit of a myth. I prefer to try and define what makes me happy and work towards that - and that can change over time. For me at the moment, it is being creative and building a home with my BF. I love animals but we don't have children, and I don't feel 'mothering' has ever been my calling. I've always envied people who knew what job they wanted to do as I never have, but I am happy with a job that pays the bills and lets us live a comfortable life.

Math. I love, love math. I've taught grades 4-6 and hope I inspire them to also love math. I pray everyday that I'm able to give my kids a good foundation to be successful math students.

I love serving. Not in a leadership capacity, but just doing some of the behind-the-scenes work. I love showing other people I care about them, and trying to go the extra mile to do so. I love crafting. Right now I'm really into crocheting, and I'm starting to feel the urge to start digital scrapbooking again. And if I can combine my love for service & caring with crafting, it's a win-win for me.
I have become more involved with my church than I have ever been, and it has opened a lot of doors to do what I love. So super cool!

[HASH]iscrapcrap, I agree that survival mode is very different for us in the U.S. than it is in a third-world country. I have been in survival. Working a very demanding job, a very long commute - an hour each way, two small kids, feeling like I hit the ground running and no time to breathe until Saturday. Maybe I had time then.
What I quoted had nothing to do with men or women or being a feminist or not. It has to do with life.
And life is very different when you have young children or when your caring for elderly parents or in other challenging circumstances.

It reminded me of the feminist movement. Saying that women can do everything and the pastor saying it's limitless when you find your passion. I guess I'm too realistic to believe what he said. "The Kingdom of God gets rid of scarcity by telling you there's no limit" It's too simplistic for me. I do tend to over think things.

[HASH]iscrapcrap, I get your point. It's kind of like saying "The sky's the limit." To me, it's an expression, but I get the thought behind the words. While it seems like you are looking at it more literally and thinking, "no, we do have a limit." Correct me if I am misunderstanding your perspective. Lisa

I graduated with a commercial photography degree in 2013 and I have been fortunate enough to shoot live bands (The Joint @ The Hard Rock, etc) and I would do it for free. Seriously, no money! I love music and photography and they go hand in hand!

I have always enjoyed working with JR high age kids in youth group & Sunday School. I never realized it was a calling until I listened to my DD's college president expound on what he looked for in his professors. He, of course, mentioned skill & knowledge of their subject; but more so he felt they needed to be "called" to that college age group. That so resonated with me. I was called to minister to that young adolescent age group.
Today, in my "retirement" I am still doing my passion. I work with young girls who have been sexually trafficked. It is difficult, heart -wrenching work. I come home exhausted with my heart full, but broken every day. I love my girls & I am so blessed to be able to help them walk through their recovery! Beauty for ashes!

Glorifying and sharing God through my art. I guess that's why I will start "Glory Art" next year. Truly, truly my passion!

For me, it's genealogy.
With genealogy, it's like a historical mystery. I really enjoy the challenge. For example, when researching one of my great-great-grandfathers, after a second marriage (his first wife died) two of his children appear to disappear after the next census. After some digging, it turns out that they were living just over the county line with their maternal aunt and uncle.
I feel like genealogy also gives me perspective. Another great great-grandmother immigrated here from Ireland with her husband, and proceeded to lose her husband and three of her four children within a span of 10 years. It makes the things that I'm worrying about now look insignificant by comparison.
I really admire those of you who have been able to incorporate a career and a passion.

My passion is helping reluctant young readers find a book that turns them on to reading. It brings me so much joy when a kid LOVES a book I suggested for him and wants to read more.
Of course I enjoy working with kids who are already rabid readers, but nothing compares to helping the kid who says he doesn't like reading find the book that changes his mind.

I'm still trying to figure out my "calling"
it probably has something to do with being creative, writing, genealogy, photography and being funny. I have not figured out how to combine the three into something meaningful or useful or that would earn money.

I really want to find my passion. Maybe my passion is enjoying the small things. Like this salmon bagel I'm eating right now is pretty dang fantastic. I have a job that I like. Don't love it. Don't hate it. It enables me to earn a decent amount to spend on myself and family. It's not changing the world or anything but it makes me happy to have this level of financial freedom. Of course more would be better. No, I would not do this job for free. I do it because I'm good at it and I like payday. I need a payday.

My classroom is my mission field.
Nurturing a love of learning, a passion for some part of the educational process (literacy and arts integration are my babies) is my favorite. I adjunct a class for a large local university every spring and LOOOOVE teaching at the college level, but for now, my little people are where I belong.
I'm passionate about some other things too, but as far as a calling, that's definitely mine. Every exhausting minute.
