My daughter (15yo) has had a tickley throat, sneezing, runny nose. Classic allergy symptoms, for a few days. Headache off and on (she’s always been prone to headaches, not unusual for her). This morning I gave her a covid test just to be sure she’s cool for school, and it was an immediate dark line positive. 🥺
I’ve had similar symptoms for just as long, but my test was negative.

I am still super tired, but cough is pretty much gone. Two of my co teachers feasted positive yesterday (one who I worked with yesterday morning) . I should have scheduled another PCR test for the weekend, but since results took so long last time I would have been well past quarantine stage if it were positive. It makes me so mad that we can't get prompt results on PCR tests - the system only works if you can get a result back fast enough to take meaningful action! I was reading someone's scrappy journaling online and it sounds like Australians can get results back within a day. Ever since the government started giving us rapid tests I have been relying on them. The results seem more accurate and useful in terms of showing when you can actually spread the virus (I think). I can't understand why employers aren't relying on them too. Which reminds me, we are eligible for another batch from the USPS for free. They're just not telling anyone... ?!?!?! www.fastcompany.com/90753033/free-covid-tests-usps-how-to-get-your-3rd-round-mailed-to-your-home

{{{Hugs to all the snuffly peas, 'rona ridden, "just a cold" victims, and allergy-ailing peas alike!}}}
It took a few days (like 4...) for many of us to test positive on the rapid test. Our rapid tests are now done 1. back of throat and back of tongue 2. back of both cheeks 3. deep in each nostril Unpleasant stuff, but I do wonder how many people get a negative covid test if they don't go "deep" enough to find the virus.

My husband and I are back from a wedding and yup, breakthru covid for us too. He seems to have it much worse than me so far, but we'll see.

If you were exposed last Monday and tested on Wednesday, that was only Day 2. The recommendation here (military base in Belgium) is to be tested on Day 5 after exposure, and to continue wearing a mask if your results are negative. A second negative test on Day 10 means you are in the clear. The labs I called did not want to book me for a PCR before Friday (returned from trip on Sunday) so it looks like the 5-day wait is also being applied here (civilian, not military). They said they'd book me for a second test the week after if I displayed any symptoms otherwise they'd stick with the first negative. I have no symptoms whatsoever. Same for my SO. Day 3 of testing negative with the at-home test kit. We're still wearing the FFP2/N95 whenever we leave our home just to be sure we don't infect anyone. Wishing the best to everyone who has tested positive/has 'Rona family members! Over 2 years in already... The fatigue and annoyance are real.

Thanks joblackford I ordered more tests for our household. We used all ours up from our initial order. Yay! I don't know why this has been kept so quiet. People who haven't used their earlier tests also need to watch out for expiration dates. The first batch I received will be expiring in about a month so we were careful not to hoard them.

Quoting myself to say the expiration dates on the latest round of government tests we just got is late JULY - even earlier than the batch we received a few months ago. By mid-August all of our tests will be expired so I'm not happy that they sent us old ones

This thread getting bumped reminded me I forgot to update re: PCR testing. We had our appointment yesterday. Got our results this morning. Negative. Not sure how we managed that with the super crowded restaurants but I'm not complaining. We never got free at-home tests here (but the government made stores sell them at no-profit margin so it was around 1€ per test and we stocked up as the expiration dates went far) but since we're vaxxed (and boosted), PCR remains free.

I've heard something somewhere that the tests are probably OK 3 months past the expiration date. I thought it was weird that the one's I got from the government expire in July (the first round, I haven't ordered the latest free ones yet), but the tests I ordered from Walgreens last September are good until sometime in 2023...

I just checked our tests and they all expire in mid August. I guess I can't be mad because they're free but the ones my daughter got from school don't expire until next year (hers were a different brand, the ones from the government were the iReady tests).
The conspiracy theory part of me is thinking the government had all these expiring tests and said "let's give 8 away to shut people up" but the normal thinking part of me is thinking they probably didn't notice.

I definitely think they were so generous because they had a stockpile of expiring tests. Maybe they decided to send them out now because cases are climbing again, but I would hope they're paying attention to the dates on their national stockpile! I wish they'd been more generous with them earlier in the year. I would hate to hear that they were trashing them, especially if they do work for a few months past the expiry date. I've sorted ours in the cabinet by date so hopefully we can use or share what we have before they expire.

The free tests my kids got from school earlier this year (January, I believe) expire next week! We used those up with the outbreak we just had. The government ones I have expire at the end of July.

CardBoxer - thanks for posting the links, that is very helpful! And I'm glad the tests will last for the first few months of school.

Bringing the topic back to breakthrough covid infection - just sharing our experience in case it’s of any help to anyone…
My kids were vaxed, not boosted. They got their two doses last May.
My 15yo daughter got Covid from school. Her first symptom was a sore throat and headache, and fatigue. She slept for two days, followed by two days of coughing. Then she felt fine.
My son, two years younger, was exactly two days behind her in sickness. His pattern was exactly the same: two days sleeping with sore throat and headache, two days coughing, then fine.
No fever or chest congestion.
My other two kids (vaccinated, not boosted) haven’t gotten it. My husband and I (vaccinated and boosted) are in the clear so far too. We were in close contact with both kids, so I’m feeling pretty lucky & relieved.

I’ve read a few articles recently about how long immunity tends to last after being vaccinated, and depending on age and other factors, it can fade pretty quickly. That means tons of breakthroughs, and in a way they aren’t so much as breaking through as walking through partially open doors.

Well it is all around me, I have several family members with it and more employees at work.
I swear I scraped my brain when swabbing, but now I wonder if I didn't do the testing correctly. The symptoms I had are exactly what my family members have and they tested positive. One had a negative PCR test as well.

Glad you’re feeling better!

Glad you’re feeling better! Yes, she had the PCR test Friday, got results yesterday morning and retested last night because she felt really sick and that was positive. Test this morning was positive as well. She works in a school and has had a number of kids positive so she has been doing home tests daily the past week or so. It is allergy season here, so she has had a runnynose and sore throat but wasn’t sure if it was covid or allergies. No fever at all.

@skellinton I’ve been curious about possible false PCR tests, since they’re so much more accurate than antigen tests. (Yes, looking at you.) “RT-PCR tests are not perfect, Alland said. “After the first week of infection, there is a decline in virus shedding in the respiratory tract, where tests can become falsely negative,” he said. “Thus, a COVID diagnosis might be missed if a patient presents with symptoms further along in the infection, which can lead to delayed, missed or unnecessary treatment for an inaccurate alternative diagnosis.” However, Alland notes that some of their study participants also appeared to have false negative RT-PCR test results soon after symptoms developed, suggesting that even within the first week, RT-PCR testing can miss COVID-19 cases.” Look at the last sentence, which I can’t bold, for some bizarre iPad friggin’ apple reason. Anyway, it comes from this, so you’re not a drama baby or whatever you called yourself. www.rutgers.edu/news/trust-clinical-covid-19-signs-over-negative-rt-pcr-test

I am just now back on here after our household's bout with breakthrough Covid. We're all vaxxed and the adults are boosted. My DD9 was exposed at school on 5/11. She tested positive on 5/14. She had a sore throat and fatigue. We thought she had strep, which was also going around at school because the building went mask optional (although DD was still wearing a mask). She was back to her normal self with no symptoms 36 hours later.
After a day of sick child cuddling, I tested positive on 5/15. My symptoms ran the gamut at different times. At first, I had a horrible headache and fatigue. Then a 24-hour fever and fatigue, no headache. Then two days of coughing/runny nose, but no fever/headache/fatigue. Then I dried up completely and was fatigued again.
My husband tested negative the entire time we were out, until Saturday when he sounded more stuffy than usual. He has severe seasonal allergies, but I tested him to make sure and he was positive. He's horribly congested and coughing, no other symptoms.

This thread reminds me that the nasal vaccines are on their way and the whole point of them is to stop infection before it goes down into the pulmonary system. Crossing my fingers they will work great and be able to help us get another layer of protection real soon!
Hugs to everyone battling symptoms and caring for Covid-19 sufferers.
