I wonder if the people who post pictures online do it to prevent glare/reflection off of the plates. And if it’s a white paper plate to cut down on the distraction of a colored or patterned plate? So maybe it’s just for photographic purposes and not that they would normally eat off of a paper plate?

When my dad died someone gave my mom this huge bag of paper plates plus plastic utensils and cups to her, on the assumption it would help with the people she had coming in and out of the house/family coming in for the funeral etc. She was aghast and we ate the meal after his funeral on regular plates. Same thing after her funeral, we ate on regular plates. The paper goods went into my office kitchen and we dined on those for years before they finally ran out.

Very, very rarely.
I keep a good supply in my house, because we do have random unplanned get togethers with my family and that can easily be 50 people. But if it’s just some of us, I have enough regular plates/silverware for 40.

We used them when we had a brand new baby .. we were so overwhelmed and looking for ways to simplify any tasks not related to keeping our little one alive. (Today is said little one’s last day of high school 😭) Otherwise, we only use them when we’re hosting a big gathering. Similarly I did use paper plates, or thought about it, when I was dealing with chronic fatigue symptoms. Oh and when we had Covid. Otherwise I use them just for BBQ and large gatherings. Edited to add rest of comment to a more fitting post 😁

super infrequently - I think the last time was when I hosted a big family get-together for my ILs...we had 50+ people and I simply don't own that many dishes. But that was probably 5 years ago.

We don’t use them. I bought a pack of 20 plates one time for things like putting cookies on to give to someone or to send someone home with some food, etc. I probably still have ten plates left and that was at least 10 years ago.

jeremysgirl - My mom switched to paper plates exclusively the last few years of her life. Before that they were only for cookouts or when camping. It is not uncommon to hear in the Fiesta threads here that the plates are too heavy for some with aging/arthritic hands too. I posted this in another comment before I read yours… I shared a while back about my friend who had a stroke that landed her in assisted living. When she moved into her independent apartment I bought her a beautiful set of dishes. She is loving cooking for herself and she’s posting pics on Fb. Her food is always on paper plates. I wonder if the plates are too heavy or it’s too unwieldy to remove them from the cabinet. I’m debating whether to ask her bc I don’t want to put her in an awkward position. BUT if she doesn’t plan on using them I don’t want her to feel obligated to store them in prime storage space.

I keep a few paper plates around in case I need them for a project, like for paint or glue or something. But we NEVER, EVER eat off them.

I buy big a package of paper plates and bowls for the summer season, when we cook outside and don’t want to heat up the house running the dishwasher. Colder seasons we use the regular glass dishes, dishwasher warms up the kitchen which is very drafty. We reuse plastic cups/ flatware we get from take out.

I think we still have the same package of paper plates in the pantry from when we moved here, nearly 18 years ago. 😳 We have a lot of plates and silverware and haven’t needed any extra for the parties we’ve had.

We rarely use paper plates, plastic silverware or paper napkins inside the house. I do buy paper napkins and plastic spoons for my son's lunches, because he can't keep track of his lunchbox to save his life (apparently, sometimes he loses his lunch before lunchtime.) In my lunches I use cloth napkins and real silverware.
Our big basket of cloth napkins was empty this weekend (thanks covid for the laundry disruption) and my family resorted to dish towels and dish cloths before they thought about the paper napkins.

We use them for meals such as hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos, sloppy joes, etc as well as for lunches on the rare occasion we are home for lunch. Disposable cutlery we dont typically use at home other than a plastic knife to cut brownies. This is what we do as well. Also dessert is usually on a small paper plate. We typically have dessert a while after dinner, so I don't want to do dishes again.

I use the super cheap uncoated paper plates for food prep, mostly a place to move cut vegetables as I'm chopping. I usually put them in my compost bin with my vegetable waste. I use a vintage Pyrex pie plate for this purpose... since I would never actually make pie with it, lol. But I like that you put it into your compost bin! that is a good idea. (I need to get one of those- a compost bin, I mean.)

I use disposable cutlery more often than paper plates. I take it to my office in my brown bag lunches so if it gets forgotten it is no big deal. I also wash and reuse it. We will use disposables when having a larger gathering so the women aren't stuck in the kitchen doing dishes. So maybe 2 times a year? I do keep a stock of plates, cups and utensils for emergency use like when power is out and I can't wash dishes. I've had the same stash for about 5 years now. A bit has been used but not near all of it and I don't have a big stash. I bought this set Amazon Set to keep at work. It stays in my drawer and I don't have to remember to bring something each time I bring my lunch. It also comes in handy when we get pizza or something that I like to cut up and eat with a fork.

I will buy them if we are having a cookout, then they will sit around for a couple of years. DH was looking for some paper plates last night for the grandkids. Didn't have a single one in the house.

I don't have a problem with glare. And I use white dinner dishes. So I don't think that is it. My mom is a finicky person and likes to use real dishes and silverware. I do think she will use paper plates for a sandwich at lunch. My 2 oldest kids use real dishes. I do not have paper plates in my house. It is just DH and me. I use the real stuff. DH hates the dishes I chose and likes Corelle. So I keep a few of those in the cabinet for him. I can see in an area of serious drought, people like oh yvonne thinking of the unnecessary use of water. That I hadn't thought of.

I would have said never, except we used a ton of them during our renovation. We could only wash dishes in the bathroom sink and it wasn't easy.
Before that, I couldn't even say.
I really don't mind doing dishes (in the kitchen sink and dishwasher) so why not use the real ones?
We also bought some lightweight dishes because the heavy stoneware is too hard for DH to handle with neuropathies.

I am an Aussie and I can honestly say the only time I would use paper plates is for a kids party or maybe an outside BBQ if I had a lot of guests. I'll add in that I broke down and bought some after a few days of doing dishes in the tub during our kitchen renovation. I'm going to disagree on the generational thing.. my mom who is 82, recycles like crazy. She is like hard core. She even takes the paper off the canned goods. (is that even a thing?). I don't see it as generational either. The only time we used paper plates growing up were for birthday cake at a kids' party. My dad(93) was always super hard core and raised us to separate recyclables and compost. Cans were crushed after removing the label and the bottom. Then both the top and bottom pieces placed in the crushed can. The SM food groups I follow use regular plates and utensils.

Historical low levels. That "why I never would use paper" attitude is long gone for those of us in drought stricken areas. It affects the way I live my daily life, it's always in the back of my mind.

I occasionally will use a thin paper plate for a snack like item. I’m pretty sure that I’ve never bought any plastic flatware. Maybe it works for some people, but I can taste a slight bit of plastic when I’ve used them at places that have them.

Never. Unless I've picked up food to go and I'm not taking it home to eat. I also don't use paper napkins. Cloth all the way.

Like others I typically only use them for large gatherings, picnics, or travel. But I know at least three families that use almost exclusively disposble plates, cutlery, and cups. All of them just don't want to spend the time doing the dishes. On a side note, the next time the "commercials you hate" thread gets posted, I'm contributing this commercial. Of course any paper plate is going to crumble under that much food? Dixie plates commercial

Paper plates and cups, never. I save the plastic cutlery that comes with take out and will use it if all the forks are dirty and I’m too lazy to turn on the dishwasher that night.

We do not have a dishwasher. I am typically the only one who washes dishes, and have two teens who are in and out and don't necessarily eat at regular meal times. If we all used regular dishes for everything, there would be dirty dishes in the sink all the time. And before anyone says anything about the kids washing their own dishes, my son is special needs and while there are a lot of things that he can and does do independently, dishes are not among them, and to be honest, that isn't a hill I choose to die on. LOL At regular mealtimes, regular dishes are always used. As for flatware, I did buy them for a while when my DD had braces because the metal ones bothered her but she re-used them a few times before tossing them.
