This is an ongoing argument with SO. There are 3 of us living in the house, and I have 6 place settings of everyday plates from Pier One (still mad at them for closing). Then I have a backup set of everyday plates that started with 6 but now have a mixed amount of bowls/plates, etc. Also, I think they are ugly. I want to replace it all with 8 place settings but SO thinks I'm being ridiculous and wasteful. But every time he uses one of the backup plates, I get unnecessarily ragey. My plan is to get 8 place settings of a pattern that I've been eyeing at C&B. I WILL get my way LOL.

I have Fiestaware for 12 and another 8 settings of those Pioneer Woman floral pattern dishes that were so popular a few years back. They mix and match nicely with the Fiestaware (I have a skittles-colored collection).
I cannot keep a full set of stainless because we seem to lose forks and spoons a lot, but I used to have stainless for 12.

Consider the fact that donating what you no longer (or maybe never?) loved will bless someone else, especially if you can give it to a place that gives them to people who truly need them. It’s so funny, last year or so my DH brought home a box of dishes that someone left up at our hunting cabin a long time ago. It was a set of maybe 15 ivory, peach and sage green Corelle dishes from the 1980’s. His thought was we could switch out our current stuff (country blue, red and ivory 1980’s Corelle, LOL) with this stuff. Um, how about no? 🤣 My response was, “Why would I trade out the ugly 1980’s dishes *I PICKED* for even uglier 1980’s dishes I *DIDN’T* pick? If I’m getting new dishes, I would go buy plain white Corelle these days.” We tried selling them in a garage sale and had no takers even at $20 for the whole big box (dinner plates, cereal bowls, coffee mugs, dessert plates), so it all went to the Salvation Army.

I probably could serve up to 16 but I don't think I have ever done that. I have Fiesta dishes and picking up certain colors in different types of dishes (dinner plate, cereal bowl, etc.) I don't have an even number of everything. I probably have about 16 dinner dishes and could fake the rest.

everyday dishes - probably 12
flatware - probably 16-20
I hve two sets of 'good' dishes - my mum's and my great aunt's - both I believe serve 12
And I have a partial set of Christmas dishes - I can serve 5 for dinner - not sure about breakfast or lunch.
Silverware - I think 12 also
edit - I started with a 4 serving set of everyday dishes and have added on as I (or DS - he's a thrift store junkie) have found pieces used (Pfaltzgraf Filagree) same with the Christmas dishes except I'm building competely from scratch with used finds (Pfaltzgraf Winterberry)

*I say 'mysteriously' disappeared, but it had to have been DD and DS taking them to work or into their bedroom, although both strenuously deny it. In our house it was most likely DD not paying attention and scraping them into the trash bin. She swears it wasn't but how does she explain that it no longer happens since she moved out? One trick I was taught when entertaining is to count your silverware once it is all cleaned and put away. This way if you come up short you can check the trash before it is picked up.

I can serve 10 out of my everyday Fiestaware. Silverware - 16 settings I have several sets of vintage china (and others) and could probably serve 60 off of those.
If I'm having more people than I have Fiestaware we use paper.

After 25 years of marriage I was sick of the dish set we'd picked out all those years ago. Plus there were quite a few chipped and to make up for those we had 2 to 3 different dish sets in the cupboard-nothing with enough settings for even 6 people.
I decided I wanted to upgrade and get something new with enough matching pieces. I don't like to eat or drink from anything made in China, so instead of looking at new dishes I hit Ebay to look for a set that wasn't made in China. I found exactly what I wanted: a set of 12 serving pieces of white porcelain called Bone White China Sheffield from Japan. It had so many pieces included in the set including 10 serving pieces, and the best thing was the price-only $195.00 for the entire set! It was in mint condition and we now use it for our everyday dishes. I love my new dishes. They are white with a lovely swirl pattern on the outside of the dishes.
We had my family over for Thanksgiving dinner this past year and it was so nice to be able to set the table with such wonderful matching dishes. I bought a tablecloth in cobalt blue (my favorite color) and these new white dishes look wonderful on it.

We have 12 dinner plates and an uneven amount of cutlery. We could probably set 8 place settings before having to grab the plastic ware.

i was just telling DH that if we had to do it over again, i wouldn't have registered for china. for our wedding, we received 12 place settings and we NEVER use it. ever. our families are far to casual and no ones like handwashing, hand drying, and packing them away.
but to answer your question, if i had to get every day place settings, i would get at least 8. i have used Fiestaware for decades now and i have 18 complete sets in my cupboard (plus more retired color sets in the garage) and it's just DH and i. if it were not fiestaware, i would probably only have 8.

Probably not many.
We have a set that my husband's former boss gave us as a Christmas gift one year...but of that, 2 of the 4 bowls have broken, as have a few of the glasses.
We have 3 plates not from that set that were used as cookie table plates at our wedding, and two bowls from Ikea that my husband likes for his oatmeal. I bought us a set of glasses when we moved in together, but only 2 of those have survived. And we have 2 other random plates.
His mom offered him a set that probably had bowls and plates in it. However...because of the behavior of her 6 cats and lack of house keeping skills, you could have washed that set in the dishwasher 1,000 times, and we still would never have eaten off of them. I recall a conversation the two of them had as he was helping his sister clean up (or at least attempt to clean up) his folks' house... "[Husband], did you take those dishes?" "Yes, mom [straight to the dumpster that we filled up in less than two hours]."
But what do we have the lion's share of? Mugs. We love a good mug. It seems to be our go-to souvenir.

One of my three daughters-in-law is following in my footsteps with the tablesetting obsession. I just won her a service for eight with many serving pieces of Spode "Christmas Rose" china at a semi-local estate auction. My best friend picked it up for me today (it's in her city) and I'll get it from her this weekend to deliver to my DIL when I head to Virginia next week. We're all so excited about it!

I originally had 12 place settings, but I probably have closer to 8 now. I also have 8-12 of my grandmother's set that is so sturdy that it was one of the few things that survived Katrina. To top it off, if I ever needed to serve more people, I have 12 of my good china, and my mom is making noises about sending 12 of the Christmas china home with me this year.

We have 24 Fiesta plates + 6 bowl plates + 5 plates left from an older set I love + 12 plates from a set I don't love but come in handy for big parties + 12 luncheon plates from the set I don't love but are big enough to use if needed for dinner plates. So we can feed 59 if needed. Cutlery would be more of a challenge. We have 2 sets of 12 places setting plus random stragglers from older sets, so might run out at 40.

I have service for 18, but no longer need that many. I don't have a family that will be coming over for the holidays any longer, which is about the only time I ever pulled out the majority of the settings. I will probably donate at least half of my dishes. Maybe more.

I have 10 place settings of Fiestaware for every day and that seems to work well for my family. Occasionally we will still have a day when we run low on bowls (they are used for everything— cereal, salad, fruit, cheese, etc.) I also have 8 place settings of china. To be honest, I really don’t use it, even at the holidays when it would be nice to set out a nicer dish. But they all need to be hand washed and after cooking a big meal, the last thing I want is to be standing at the sink for an hour washing dishes! The Fiestaware can be popped right into the dishwasher so even at the holidays, that is what I use. I’m considering getting rid of the china to free up some space in my cabinets.

I only have two full sized upper cabinets. Plates, bowls, and saucers all go on one shelf. When they reach the top, that's the amount I have. I have never kept track of what I own. I replace silverware and dishes as they break or get lost. The shelf above has a variety of mugs, plastic cups, and glass cups. Nothing matches.
ETA: Forgot about the set of china in the basement my MIL thought I MUST have when she learned I didn't own any. Apparently it came from her sister. Some of the pieces have her last name written in black sharpie on the back.

I have about 16 Fiesta Plates in multi colors, Christmas luncheon plates and china for 8 that my grandmother gave me. When we use the china, I combine it with DDs so we have enough.

Haha yes, I've lost a few potato peelers that way! And not long after we got our new coffee machine, DD was knocking the coffee grounds into the bin, and the filter fell out of the filter holder, but she didn't notice. Later that night I went to make myself a coffee, and the filter was missing. The rubbish had already been taken outside, so there I was on the front step in the dark, with gloves on, sorting through a big bag full of kitchen waste, trying to find this damn filter. They cost about $30, so I had to find it.

I want to add that if we could get Fiestaware here, I would have to buy ALL.THE.COLOURS and would therefore have a setting big enough to feed an army! I guess it's probably lucky we can't get Fiestaware here.

In the last couple of years I replaced my service for 8 with a new service for 12. We're a family of 5 and as the kids start pairing off it seems like we'll need at least 10.
I very occasionally host family gatherings of 20-25, but we usually go with disposable plates and I have various flatware sets. I don't recally anyone in my family ever using real dishes at the holidays!

I have full set for 12.
We keep kosher. So we have 12 settings in my dairy set and 12 settings in my meat set. I also have a settings for 12 of the glass set from c&b. It can go either dairy or meat if I put it in the dishwasher so if I need more I can use it. There are many times we have holidays dinners for 20+.

I have 8 silverware settings because that's what came in the Costco box (Oneida). (Wedding silverware is separate [ retroneau] and not 8 settings, because we sent DS to school with it and for the most part never came back. It's currently out of circulation and expensive to replace.) I have maybe 8 sets (some eight, others only 4) of dishes? It's only DH, DS, and me and on occasion MIL. World Market, for the win. I won't miss it if it breaks. (Wedding porcelain is pretty much out of circulation chez nous- only for special occasions, and I'm really considering getting rid of it due to cabinet limited real estate. # liberty) We are a small household with a small number of visitors. I think the most people we've ever hosted was maybe 10, and that was maybe once.
