When my sweet Melissa passed away almost 3 yrs. ago at the age of 32, my husband and I picked up and moved from the east coast to Minneapolis. We have two little granddaughters here. Never thought about moving before this. I will tell you that when you open your mind to the wonder of new and different, you can be very happy. (I understand about the teacher identity. Taught middle school for 30 yrs. Been retired for ten and I still get "school dreams/nightmares".

Oh, man. Moving is so hard! I wish you (and your brother) the best. Santa Barbara would be my dream place to live. It’s spectacular!

It takes a lot of courage to make the kind of move that you're making. I hope you are proud of yourself!
By subbing, it sounds like the ideal situation to be able to spend as much time with your brother as you can.

I'm glad you have a safe place to land and time for both your DB and time to let the right work opportunity show itself.

Sending good luck vibes your way for the job hunt, I’m sure once you sub for a bit you’ll be able to land something permanent that’s a good fit. I agree with the others who have said you won’t regret this time you’re spending with your brother. I was lucky enough to visit that area once and it was so peaceful there. You’ll love it, I’m sure.

I hope you and your dog love California.
It will be such a blessing for your brother and sister-in-law law to have you with them.

So all in all I’m feeling pretty optimistic at this point I'm glad you feel optimistic. I truly believe attitude has so much to do with success. I'm sure all will go well and perhaps subbing may be exactly what is needed at this point in your (and your brother's) life. I am sure that CA will be beautiful and it will be wonderful to be with your brother during this time. I know it is hard to leave. It is good to hear your update!

I wish you all the luck and happiness that you deserve in your move. Taking care of a loved one at a time like this is a very selfless, special thing to do, and you will not regret it. I applaud you for your brave choice. Enjoy the beach! You and your dog will love it.

I agree that you will find a job through your subbing. You are a good sister to move and be there for your brothers and SIL. Safe travels!

I love your updates. They are real and I like know what’s going on in my friends’ lives. It’s so overwhelming at this stage. Just keep pushing forward. This week will be about what you are leaving behind, but then it’s all looking ahead to what you are moving towards (literally!) You will find your place.

Thank-you guys for all of the sweet messages. I really am looking forward to being out there. My dog is going to be SO happy to see her favorite people (who moved a month ago) and her BFF (my brother’s dog). And then there’s the beach and mountains and WINE. And my brother REALLY wants me out there. I got Covid a few weeks ago and that postponed everything by a week and he was SO bummed. Like a little kid. I will keep you updated and post pictures of our house when I get out there. In the meantime, back to packing, (You know that end stage of packing where you just have all the crap you don’t know what to do with? Yeah….I’m there).

((( katybee ))) If I had relatives in California, I’d leave Texas in a second ! It’s always scariest in the very beginning. Always. And, don’t forget - you are taking ALL of us with you. 💚 Quinlove said it perfectly.

One thing that always surprises me is how many jobs become available during the school year. I don't think teachers seeking jobs should get too bummed out about not having a job lined up right at the beginning of the school year. I think you'll be as busy as you want to be when you are subbing. You'll be glad to have this time with your brother.
My daughter and her husband just changed duty stations and they made the long drive out to Oceanside, CA this week. They arrived there last night and my daughter is so excited to be there for three years.

I think everything is in place for a reason, and you are where you need to be! The house sounds cute and subbing is a great way to start (and be able to support your brother). Sending you peace as you make the actual move!

It sounds like you have thought deeply about all of this and that you're making the right move. Do you journal? I'd recommend writing this all down for yourself - it might help you keep your eye on your "true north" when things get difficult.
Praying that the best path becomes clear for you!

You are making the best of the situation you are in. Having flexibility this year sounds like the best thing for your family right now. As a sub you will be able to visit different schools in the area. Teachers and principals from these schools will get to know you and keep you in mind for new positions in the future. Most districts in my area (inland empire) have sub shortages. Most districts have increased the sub pay because of this. I have found that the best subs usually get full time teaching jobs. I have lost my favorite subs this way. So glad you are staying positive. I wish you the best.

I hate to be the debbie downer but sadly I usually am…is there a legal agreement that you will be allowed to stay in the house once your brother passes? I hate to see his wife put you out once he’s gone.
All my best to you as you care for your brother.

But good question to ask….

I'm so excited for you katybee! Santa Barbara is heaven on earth and its my favorite place ever. Enjoy your new life, walking on the beach, lunching in Montecito on Coast Village Road, picking the most gorgeous fruits and veggies at farmers market on Tuesdays afternoons. Grabbing the best tacos ever at La Super Rica Taqueria on Milpas. Concerts at the SB Bowl, where if you sit high enough on summer nights you can feel the cool ocean breezes and watch the moonlight dance over the ocean. eta: to get you in the SB mood, my favorite blogger from Santa Barbara, Valerie Rice. Lovely blog, beautiful lush gardening and recipes www.eatdrinkgarden.com/category/garden/
