Since we are talking about trends, what motifs were trendy through the years?
I'll start.
The earliest trends I remember were chandeliers (what were we supposed to do with those?) and owls (much more useful).
What do you remember?

I remember when triangles and diamonds were hot.
Chevron patterns galore!
Butterflies.
Rainbows.
Ombre affect.
Sunburst/sunset glow.
Flamingo pool floating.
Brick walls, especially white washed ones.
Wood - like actual looking wood pieces.
Eta: not sure if these are all motifs but what I remember multiple companies having.

I used those chandeliers on a Disney page for the Haunted Mansion. The chandeliers were even black and fuzzy.
I just remember the awful colors of so many lines.
When I started around 2000, I remember that the icons were really tiny. I also remember there was a lot of block prints. Lots of the motifs are still the same.

The first "icons" I remember were stamps rather than on the paper.
I wanted to collect all the CTMH sets with little kids playing. I would stamp them on different colours of pp and then fussy cut so I could dress them differently.
Speaking of dressing paper dolls, the Julie Nutting girls were--and still are--fun to collect and stamp and dress however you like.
There have been lots of papers with clothes hanging on the line--from bathing suits and flip flops to Santa's pants and socks. Many baby themed papers had bibs and onesies and everything else BABY hanging from clothespins.
Again, not an icon, exactly, but alot of my older papers have big swirls, often drawn to look like waves or leaves or flowers. They looked like they had been hand drawn with black ink and then coloured in bold or bright colours on a light background.

I think of those swirly patterns as the mixed media look of the early 2000's. I just used a very ugly pink and brown swirl for matting yesterday! I am finding that I just cannot use them as background sheets.

The earliest trends I remember were chandeliers (what were we supposed to do with those?) Was also going to add that I was REALLY into K&Co for a while and they had so.many.chandeliers. and I though they were very cool, shabby "chic" look, lol. It makes me laugh to see my pages of everyday life scrapbooked looking like we were in Paris.

Moustaches.
I used that one once on a photo of DS in a Super Mario costume.

Prima flowers in the cute bottles. I had to have them all. The bottles took up a lot of space. Didn't do much with them. Years later gave them all away.

All my patterned paper is old - from my scrapping heyday before taking such a long break (and now I barely buy it since I do PL). I could just look in my giant bin and whatever is in there will be the answer. Lol although, actually probably not. I wasn’t one to buy the stuff I deemed weird or unusable (mustaches- although I think I wasn’t scrapping then and I don’t remember chandeliers at all). I am sure my bin is just full of plaid and stripes, and dots, and kind of vintage looking faded type ombré papers. 😂

When I got back into paper crafting in 2011-12 was the start of chevrons, chandeliers, mustaches, owls, ledger paper. I used chevron and ledger paper.

I was going to say that I have never used an owl in my life, but then I remembered a page I did only a year or two ago, about my son when he was little, and I actually used an owl. I'm not going to comment any further, because I'm still using half the things that people are mentioning hahaha! (Except moustaches. I won't use moustaches.) (Hmmm, maybe I will use a moustache when I scrap the page about DSO doing Movember.)

Shabby chic: lots of pink, off-white, lace, buttons, torn paper, ribbons, and lots of brown. Buckles, zippers, grunge.

Swirls and flourishes were everywhere. Lots of monochromatic basic patterns like hearts and stars. Vertical stripes. Marbling. Textured look/distressed, think a rendered wall or a sponged painted wall. Patterned and different finishes of vellum were more common Not a motif as such but the hand painted scene, I remember seeing teddy bears and vineyards a lot. Most lines available to me were either pastel or heritage colours and the paper was of questionable quality, I love the nice sturdy patterned papers we have now.

How about these: &&&&&?
Every die cut package came with at least one of them. I actually received one in a die cut package yesterday (Vicki Boutin?) and I noticed it because I haven't seen one in a while.
Hot air balloons used to be everywhere. I don't think I've ever used one. More recently: llamas and sloths. I like both of those animals so I don't really mind. I have used the llamas before, I haven't used a sloth.

I know it’s such a dated look, but I have a big soft spot in my heart for that old K&Co look you described so well. 7gypsies did this too. I don’t really scrap like that (although I have a stack of k&co still waiting to be used…) but that design just takes me back to simpler times. When I got back into paper crafting in 2011-12 was the start of chevrons, chandeliers, mustaches, owls, ledger paper. I used chevron and ledger paper. I love ledger paper to this day! Ditto! Give me all the ledgers.

I remember paisley's and how I had to have every paisley stamp I found. I could never figure out what to do with the chandeliers except has abstract art for album covers.

I still like flourishes, brackets, and a certain stylized ampersand- it reminds me of my alma mater! 😳
Edit: this post made me a revolutionary Pea - just in time for the 4th of July!! 🎆 🇺🇸 🎆

I like the & shape but find it hard to use. I don't buy many collections but Bloom Street definitely had one on the sticker sheet and I ended up putting it in my sticker/ephemera journal (which is just a notebook where I stick cheerful things that I like, postage stamps, stickers, etc randomly). Hot air balloons work for me for cardmaking. Doodlebug loves them, they're in tons of collections, and I enjoyed Shimelle's version a few years ago. Sloths are fabulous for cardmaking too - "don't hurry, be happy" types of cards and there are some good llama puns too. I wouldn't have as many uses for hot air balloons or sloths if I was a scrapper but maybe more use for &&s. Owls are great. Chandeliers and mustaches not so much. I have some digital flourishes that I should probably delete because I haven't used them ever, and I've had them for a decade. My photobooks do not need flourishes.

The earliest is probably rolls and rolls of stickers and no 12x12 papers.

Fun question artbabe. Those chandeliers were always a mystery to me - I'm more of an overhead light that perpetually needs dusting kind of gal. It does make you wonder who decides what things will be a trend. Like the sloths - I don't mind them but can't imagine where I would use one. But hurray for all of it and having choices. Even if we think they're weird.
