I love grocery shopping, so I don't ever order on-line. But if I did, I would NOT order fruit or veggies. I am quite particular about those things. I don't really care about how they look, in fact I will often buy the "I'm Perfect" (imperfect) branded fruit and veggies. This is the produce that looks ugly but tastes fine. In the past the producers would have had to dump the stock, but now they can still sell it to the supermarkets. My problem is that I wouldn't trust them to pick the crisp apples instead of the floury or bruised apples, or they would choose potatoes that are all different sizes. For certain dishes, I need particular sized potatoes. Either all big or all small, or even just all the same size, so that they cook in the same amount of time. DSO did the grocery shopping a few weeks ago, and I was quite surprised when I unpacked the potatoes. They were all different shapes and sizes. It was almost like he made a concerted effort to pick the biggest AND the smallest ones he could find. It never occurred to me that I would need to tell someone to get similar sized and shaped potatoes. He also bought mandarins, and one of them was rotten. He must have just scooped them up all at once and put them in the bag. So weird.

I am selective about what produce I will let the store pick out, but admittedly haven't had any issues. The main things I insist on picking out myself are berries, grapes and leafy greens. (though once in the middle of strawberry season, I did have an instacart shopper get them at Costco and they were great)

As most of you know I've been eating a whole foods, plant based diet for the past 8 years. Doing this requires a lot of cooking using mostly whole foods (produce). 90% of the time I prefer to do my own shopping. Every two weeks I make up a list of what I'm making for dinners and then I list what ingredients I need to make those dinners adding anything else we need. Doing that, plus not having to buy meat or dairy any longer has allowed me to switch grocery stores from Giant or Safeway to doing all of my food shopping at Whole Foods-who has the best produce around.
During the height of Covid when it was at it's worse I used the grocery services online and had the groceries delivered. Luckily that hasn't been the case since the vaccines. But just this past week I had migraines every other day and just couldn't summon the energy for a big, grocery run, so I used the online grocery service to do the order once again. I was happy with what was selected regarding the produce. Was it perfect? No. I like to buy really firm avocados because they last longer and the ones the person selected were squisher than I would have chosen, even though I put in the note section to please choose the firmest avocados. There is a good chance there weren't any firmer ones. I get that.
But honestly I thought they did a great job overall and it was worth it to me. Will I have my groceries delivered every time? Probably not, but I'm glad this service is there for when I need it.

No, because I buy produce at a place that doesn't have pick up orders. I use FM pick up for things like seltzer, crackers, milk, pantry items.

I do curbside shopping for a grocery store here in Pittsburgh. I do my best in picking produce. However, people need to be realistic also. Buying out of season stuff will usually not garner the best results.
I have people ask me not to buy bruised apples (the bagged ones). I don't know what they look like.
Or requesting bananas with no brown. That's nearly impossible to find.
Or requesting only firm grapes (again, they are in bags). It can get frustrating.

I don't even trust DH to buy produce for me. Grocery shopping is something I enjoy, as I've become more of a foodie in my old age, and I like planning meals on what looks particularly good.

This is exactly why I don't order produce, because I would request all of those things (except bagged apples - I always buy them loose). And if I'm picking for myself, I know that I'd rather have no bananas than bananas with any brown on them. I prefer bananas that still have green on the stem end, in fact. And I can look at a bag of grapes and tell if they are firm enough for us - stems that are still mostly green and firm, not brown and dehydrated, grape are still firmly attached to the stems, etc. If they're not like that, I don't want them. And so on. I know it would be super frustrating to try to pick out produce to my specifications, which is why I don't order it. Plus I suspect that some stores/services want shoppers to fulfill all items, even if the quality goes against the orderer's requests (like they request an unripe avocado but all the avocados in stock are ripe). I don't know that for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me. I don't want to complain about my produce and get a shopper in trouble if it's out of their control, but I also don't want food I don't like.
