DD is getting married Sept. 3rd. She and her fiancé bought an older home and are flipping it. They have put countless hours into remodeling and planned to live there for a couple of years before building a new home. Today she called me from her bachelorette party a few hours away to tell me that an outlet had overheated (or whatever happens to outlets when nothing is plugged into them) and the house caught fire. Luckily, her fiancé was able to call 911 early enough that the fire damage is contained to the kitchen but there is extensive smoke and water damage. We won’t know the extent until Monday. All of there wedding gifts are ruined. They have ample insurance and all will be fixed in the long run but they are stressed beyond belief. Thank you for any good Pea thoughts you can send their way!
Update 8-1 They met with the insurance adjuster today. He basically said they will need to take everything down to the studs and rebuild. All of their belongings are a total loss due to extensive smoke damage. He said it will take approximately 9 months to a year to complete the work due to supply issues. The insurance company is sending a team in to help them inventory everything. One bedroom was completely filled with shower and wedding presents that have never been out of their packaging. But they said smoke is insidious and can cause long term health issues so they are considered a loss. His parents have a second home they can live in for the duration. So while they are heartbroken over losing everything they worked so hard to renovate, we are all feeling blessed that no one was hurt and there is a verrry distant light at the end of a looong tunnel. Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes!

Check with a couple of credit card companies. One of our cards comes with a nicely day insurance plan against theft, loss and breakage.

oh no! I hope it's an "easy" fix down the line. A fire is one of my biggest fears.

So sorry.
Please make sure they get all the wiring checked. There might be a whole house problem.

I'm sending them good thoughts that the house will be repaired and look gorgeous after it's repaired and renovated. So sad about the wedding gifts. Hopefully, insurance will cover the replacement cost.

I am so sorry for your daughter and fiancé. I hope that repairs can be done fairly quickly and (relatively) easily. What a stressful thing to happen during an already stressful time. Sending them good thoughts, good luck, and a congratulations on their upcoming wedding.

That is terribly upsetting. Thank goodness he was able to call 911 in time to contain the fire. I hope everything works out for them in the end and there are no more serious issues with the house. Wishing them a wonderful wedding day, with an unusual story to tell to their guests!

What an awful thing to experience. So glad they’re safe though. I hope insurance makes them whole again on it all.

Awww that is scary.. thankfully no one was hurt. My parents house caught on fire from an unplugged Mr. Coffee Pot (I think my father had something to do with it, but nothing was ever proved that anyone did anything)... while the house didn't burn down 99% of it had to be gutted and started over. It sucks. I still had some of my personal stuff in their house. We lost one dog and a cat. One dog survived.

How distressing! They sure didn’t need that to deal with on top of all the traditional wedding stress! I hope they’re able to get it all sorted quickly and that insurance is able to help them recoup their losses. What a nightmare.

Wow, did not realize there was that much damage. Glad the insurance person came out so quickly, that they are covered and have a place to live!
May they have a wonderful wedding and future together.

shower and wedding presents Years ago we had an apartment fire. If any of the presents are like dishes or serving pieces or anything that can be put in the dishwasher try that first to see if that helps. The insurance people paid to have our clothes professionally washed too, to see if the smell could be removed. It is an awful thing to go through. I hope it is a smooth process for them.
