I struggle to watch some paper crafting you tubers because of their sparkly ‘pointy/overdone false fingernails. Lately I struggle to watch some that show their faces because of the false eyelashes. They look big and black and FAKE and unflattering to my eyes and I find it so distracting. Is it just me- am I the “natural look” dinosaur here?

If you’re a dinosaur, I am too! I don’t watch any crafters on YouTube, but there is another woman in a different niche that I watch and she wears the heaviest false eyelashes (like a caterpillar sitting on the eyelid) and pointy almond nails. I agree - distracting and unflattering.

I don't care for the pointed nails.
I don't care for dirty hair. It's just so off putting to me.

I’d much rather see well manicured polished nails than unpolished nails. As long as they don’t struggle to pick up items or glue things together, I’m ok. Otherwise it’s way too distracting.

I notice it but it doesn't bother me as much as some of the voices of people do. I know people can't help what they sound like, so there are some I'll mute to watch and others that I'll pass on.

I am more bothered by someone singing on their videos than their appearance. For some reason any singing just gets to me even if they are good. Weird. Nails don't bother me unless they can't easily pick up items. Then it just becomes me being fixated on what they are trying to do vs what they are creating. I might focus on hair for a minute, but then get back into the video. I always try to appreciate that people are putting out good, free content and not to let things bother me... unless they sing.

If I am going to take the time to watch a video, then I prefer someone who at least tries to be more professional. I don’t want distractions, and that includes anything overdone or fake looking in regards to their appearance. Or rambles on and on (keep it concise and to the point).

My pet peeve is dirty nails on video so I'll gladly take the stiletto/coffin/ballerina/whatever long shape nails over those... You can sport a natural look without being bothered by someone on the super glam side of the spectrum (and vice versa). Maybe you're more distracted by these looks on camera because you haven't been exposed to them IRL much, camcas? I don't mind. If someone has put thought and time into their look and it's not my personal preference, I try not to focus on it. They are just different tastes in appearance. Vocal fry and tongue clicks are my major issues with people speaking on camera. They just irritate me so much that I have to mute the video.

Long nails can be a little distracting, but they're better than bitten, jagged ones with picked cuticles. I just can't watch videos with those. There's a jewelry maker whose videos I really like, but she has some sort of skin condition, and her hands sometimes have scabs all over them. I'm sorry. I know she has a condition that she can't help, but sometimes I have to turn off the video. I do the same with the bitten nails and cuticles. I don't think that everyone has to have a professional manicure, but at least have clean and neat looking hands and nails.

I haven’t seen the nail issue on any of the channels I watch. There is one with overdone lash extensions that are very distracting. She’s pretty polished/natural looking except for the lashes.

I haven't seen any scrappers with these nails, but I have seen a few random crafters that I marvel at how they get things done.

I was laughing at myself because ALL of those things bug me -- but grammar most particularly.

Most of the time I can overlook the things that irritate me on YouTube. Fingernails and false lashes don't bother me, but the following things have made me switch off in the past:
1. Talking in a childish cutesy voice or talking to the audience too slowly, as if they are children.
2. Giving pets/children too much time on camera.
3. Singing for an extended time (more than 3 seconds), or singing on every video.
4. Having the camera focused on the workspace and putting their hand in the frame to do a weird little childish wave to say hello. Irrationally, this one turns me off straight away. Please just say hello like a grown-up.

It actually makes my throat feel gross - it's like I subconsciously imitate the growly thing with my throat muscles or something. GAH!

I don’t mind as much the singing of a random song lyric if they say something that makes them think of it, it’s the sing-songy talking that drives me batty. It’s become such a “trend” for YouTubers. 🙄

I have a lot of pet peeves. It means I don't watch a lot of crafty videos. Including, but not limited to:
* False nail "talons" * Distracting jewelry, especially if it's noisy/moving around all the time * Overuse of an adjective to the point where it's every fifth word, like 'cute', 'sweet', 'adorable', etc. * children or pets screeching in the background * baby-talking the audience * constantly shaking camera * lots of unmuted packaging crinkles, especially if they talk through it

I don’t see too many eyelashes on the crafty videos I watch, but in general, it’s definitely a turnoff for me. There are a handful of Instagrammers for whom I stopped watching their stories because of their insane eyelashes. It’s like that gigantic eyebrow trend from a few years ago has migrated slightly south. Pass. I don’t even know how they can hold their lids open from the weight of them. And surely the monster lashes impede their vision?! If I even get a clump of mascara in my lashes I can’t look around without seeing it hover just on the periphery.

Appearance doesn't bother me (nails, false eyelashes, etc) but really bothers me is video and audio quality. If your video quality (constantly shaking camera, audio that fluctuates, camera auto focusing too much, etc) is poor I won't watch. I know almost all crafters aren't professional videographers but if you can't get the basics right you please don't post videos until you can figure that out. I also have an aversion to certain voice types but there's not a lot people can do about that. I've sent constructive criticism DM's to a few content creators with suggestions on how to fix some of the issues they constantly have and most have been very kind and don't get offended, but I think it's because I'm critiquing the production quality, not the product their creating or the way they look.

So funny camcas! I didn't know what to expect when I opened this thread! I don't watch too many crafty videos (love Shimelle) but for a period of time it seemed like most of our local TV newscasters/weather forecasters went through the many layers of false eyelashes and heavily penciled in eyebrows. It was pretty distracting. Of course I'm not up on fashion or current trends so to me it might've been weird but on the cutting edge to the rest of the world.

I'm not a fan of close-ups of the crafter's face during intros -- it makes me want to back away from the screen. Also, please have all of your s*** (deletion mine) together before you start the video. I don't want to watch you fumbling for your ink pad or bone folder.

I'm not seeing caterpillar lashes or hearing singing on yt but I've seen a few talons. They amuse me more than irritate me. I'd rather see those than jagged, discolored nails. I'm fine with short and simple. I just don't want to watch long, yellowed nails that look like you could fly down and snatch a rodent out of a field for your dinner. My issues are bad lighting, vocal fry, and lately hearing people's voiceovers that sound like they're reading off a rather mundane to do list. I won't watch if there's bad lighting but if it's a voice issue I usually turn it down. I'm sure people would turn down the sound if I made yt videos.

I thought of this thread, I just started following a card maker on instagram....Last week her long nails were blue and they clashed with all her cards and now they are yellow!!! Ugh! I really like her cards but her nails are so damn distracting. I think I'm going to have to unfollow her.

Reminds me of a scene from the witches movie by Roald Dahl… or maybe I’m just jealous as I can’t have nails longer than about 3mm or I chip them…

Tell me it’s a nail fetish channel without telling me it’s a nail fetish channel. Her mouth says look at the backpack but her hands say look at my nails.

That was extremely creepy, but the comments were even more disturbing. Thank you for sharing this, though, because it's the most interesting thing I've seen all day - creepy and all.
