That really amazes me about Japan. I've seen people leave their wallets, laptops, phones, etc. on their tables at a restaurant and get up and go to the restroom. I've even seen this done at a busy McDonalds. I hope that is one thing that never changes about Japan.

I live about a mile or so away from downtown Knoxville (which is delightful, by the way). I think the city itself has a few hundred thousand residents and the greater Knoxville area is close to a million or so. It's not big and not small.
If it were up to me, my doors would be locked all the time. My husband is in and out of the house constantly, so he forgets to lock the front door sometimes. Almost never at night, but during the day he is in and out all the time. He works from home 4 days a week.
We have a very large dog. He is a Great Pyrenees. I don't really worry about people breaking in because one time I walked in the house and caught him by surprise. He didn't know it was me for a few seconds. I never realized how many large, sharp teeth my dog has or how much he wants to eat strangers who enter his house. Yikes. Not concerned about it.
We do have a decent amount of crime here. I live in a city. In my neighborhood, the weeks just before and after 4th of July? Probably fireworks. The rest of the time? Oh, it's gunshots for sure. We have lots of gunshots. Lots and lots of gunshots. They seem to have pretty terrible aim, though, unless they are aiming not to shoot actual people. I have lots of neighbors who are friends. Lots. If I had a problem I would have 20 people here in five minutes. But the goal is not to have a problem.
I definitely do still prefer the doors stay locked. If it's just me and the animals? I lock it down.

We live on a street with some cars going through most of the time. We lock our doors at night and when we leave. Although our basement door is always locked unless I have gone there from the outside steps.
When I was married and we lived at the end of a cul-de-sac, we didn't lock them nearly as much.

i live just out of downtown area in toronto, very much a neighbourhood with older homes, mature trees, etc. now i live on a street in a residential strip of a pretty major through road in toronto - it has streetcar route and certain sections of it are certainly more commercial. i always lock my door. our local FB page shows videos of people trying to open doors. no thanks.
i was just at a cottage that was VERY secluded. had to go down a road that is two tire tracks through a field then thru a forest for a couple of kms. the road is a dead end at the lake where the owner has two other cottages. no one had any reason to be on that road, if they could even find it. i still locked doors at night. little more relaxed during day if we were down by the lake. but if we went to town, locked.
i have lived in town of 2000 and current population of toronto is 2.7 million. always locked doors. better safe than sorry.

I live on a dead end street that’s off a cut thru street. I keep my doors lock. When we first moved into the house I had 2 people walk right into my house, one was a woman so said she was looking for so and so who lived here. Nope. I don’t recognize the name. The other guy, no clue, but my neighbor, who lived across the street and was a big guy, was over in a shot asking the guy if we had a problem here. After that doors always locked. I don’t even open my front door despite the fact that my screen door locks because those 2 encounters freaked me out.
I do think I want to look into some sort of security system but I’m overwhelmed thinking about it.

No matter how 'safe' or 'quiet' your neighborhood I don't understand not locking your door. If it's ease of access for in laws or something, wouldn't you just give them a key? We don't lock it up if we're out in the yard because it's just not necessary to do so. There aren't people wandering around our neighborhood during the daytime waiting for us to go out the front door so that they can go in through the back door. It's just not happening. "Could it", yes, but so "could" a lot of things- fire, car accidents, trip and fall, etc.... It's safe to leave our doors unlocked while we're home and statistics will prove that. We lock the doors at night and set the alarm. We lock them when we leave home. We take reasonable precautions, but to lock them every time we go outside is not one of them, where I live that would seem paranoid. Agree.

I live on a quiet street in the suburbs with about 20 houses on it. I never see more than 3-5 cars pass my house in a day, and some people walking their dogs. I’ve lived here 25 years and know my neighbors and have never heard of any breakins or robberies. My FB was blowing up with pictures of a bear eating a bird feeder last week.

I live in a typical suburban neighborhood. It's relatively lowkey. If I went for a walk probably one or two cars might pass by. Just depends. Maybe none.
Garage door is only opened when we are in the garage or working in the front yard. Closed most other times. Even if we are in the back.
The front door is usually opened and the glass door is locked. Sometimes I forget to lock that one.. but 80% of the time it is locked. We have no windows to the front yard (except upstairs) so that is why I leave it open.
50/50 if I remember to lock the door from the garage to the house. I should be better but it is what it is.
Back door is usually locked all the time. Sometimes we forget since we take the dog in/out. But no one would get past the dog if trying to get in. Unless they had a steak.
All in all if we are inside doors are locked. Not high traffic but there is a little crime. Occasion break-in, occasion car getting broke into (those are 100% always locked). Once and a blue moon an escapee from jail.

My neighborhood is quiet...and I probably only get 5 cars on my street on any day and DH is one of those cars. . I do live on a dead end street and you really have to be going to my street to get to it, so that helps. When I take Scouty out of this walk, we walk a 4 mile loop and I might pass 2 cars but will pass no less than 10 people walking their dogs.
We have a home security system that is turned on all the time...but I don't lock my front doors until bedtime. We don't leave open our garage but many because our garage has A/C and Im not paying for the air to escape. There is practically no crime in my area. If there were to be a cop car on my street, I would have no less than 3 neighbors calling to tell me about it. I bet its been before Covid hit that a car was broke into. It just doesn't happen in my neighborhood. We had to change dog sitters when ours went to college and the new girl came by one day while we were gone and the neighbor didn't recognize her and we forgot to tell her that we had someone new. DH got a call from a neighbor just letting us know that there was a car that she didn't recognize and she knew we were out of town. LOL
DH's home office has an exterior door to the back yard, and it is always locked. The den French doors are always locked but the dining room French doors are usually unlocked during the day since I am in and out of there. The den + dining room doors all go to the same patio. And the front door is always unlocked til bedtime. And the garage to mudroom door is never locked but there is a sensor that chimes when you open the door.

Always lock our doors. We live in a busy area but not much crime. I would prefer not to be one of the first. I just feel safer.

May I just say that this is a public message board that anyone in the world can read. Let’s stick to how busy our street is and assume that everyone locks their doors.
