stacmac another issue to consider, if they go out together and dog goes back in, cat will be stuck outside, unable to reenter.

You're looking for an electronic pet door. They can be opened by either a collar chip or a microchip. Only the pet with the chip can get through. I've heard of them, but don't have any experience with them. I've never heard of a ban on outdoor cats -- is it because they kill the local wildlife? In our neighborhood, loose cats kill the gentle rabbits that live in our yard, and they poop in the vegetable garden, which fencing hasn't been able to keep them from. DH once chased one away with a super-soaker water gun in his pajamas. I tried to be done laughing before he came back in. In my neighborhood, loose rabbits breed like rabbits and eat my gentle plants and poop all over my yard. The deer are worse.

In the U.K. many people have ‘cat flaps’. We had one for our 2 cats. They used to drag half dead birds through it and once, on Christmas morning, I opened a half full box of cereal to find a live rat staring up at me. I also came home from work to find a super aggressive Tom cat in my lounge. I currently have 2 dogs and a cat, but no cat flaps or doggie doors!

So many good replies - thank you! So the overall consensus seems to be that the cat will get out no matter what!
Not what I was hoping to hear, but it sounds accurate. And as one poster mentioned, imagine if the cat got locked outside.
We had a doggy door for our last dog. I don't know if it's different because where I live in Australia, everyone has fully fenced backyards, so I didn't worry about other animals getting in (a neighbours kid crawled in once, but that's another story). When I lived in the USA, no one around us had fences.
I just got a message today that I've been approved for a puppy out of the litter I was looking at. It's a labrador, and adorable as anything. I can train to puppy pads, and I think DH is leaning towards making a large catio that the dog could get out to during the day when I go to work.
Thanks everyone.

Are you getting another Brittany like your avatar pup? We have two - they're the best! No Brittany this time, although we did love the breed. They are expensive here! I looked at a litter online the other day and they were $6000 each.
