If you could pick one thing to have in your home that was in your childhood home, what would it be?
I wish I’d kept all the handwritten letters I’d saved from various friends over time.

I think it would have to be the MCM armchairs that I could now sell for a lot of money! 😄 If fantasy is allowed, it would be my Westie, Dougal. I had him from ages six to twenty, and he was a real character. If I can only have realistic things, then it would be my collection of a children’s comic called Once Upon A Time. It was a beautiful comic full of pictures of famous works of art, exciting stories from history, puzzles and general knowledge. I got it every week, and must have read each issue dozens of times.

Aside from my dad and my dog, I'd want my dad's fishing poles. We spent so much time fishing and chatting when I was a kid. I treasure that time.

My dad's old gold armchair. It was very 1970s. But I remember sneaking into it to read when he wasn't home and it feeling like the most comfortable place to sit in the whole house. I wonder what happened to that chair. I'll have to ask him. My mother couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Home movies (we think those got burned up in a house fire)
My sticker collection. Back when you would buy them at the grocery store and traded with friends. I had a whole shoebox full of them. Not sure what I did with them.
My Mrs. Beasley doll.
I have my old letters and diary and original 'scrapbooks'.. thankfully.

well not IN the house but our clothesline. It had metal poles and was super sturdy. I used to love running through the sheets and playing underneath.
I'd like to hang my sheets and I prefer to hang dry so many of my clothes I'd make use out of it.
Of course I romanticize it, but the I love the memory of being outside with mama helping hand her the clothes as she hung, and when I got older and tall enough to reach, to go outside and race to take them down.

I wish I still had my Sesame Street little people play set. I loved that thing. I kept that and all of the other Fisher Price Little People sets. Wanna come play? My grandkids have all loved heading down to the basement to play with all of them--or hauling them all upstairs to set up the whole village in our living room. So much fun listening to all the adventures those little people have LOL! A few years ago, my brother and I went through our old home and each took home some items. I have a copy of Alice in Wonderland, my dad's silver baptism cup, a doily my mom made, and a photo book from my teens. I would have loved to have found my old doll. But no such luck. My mom had made a stocking body for the china head of a doll she had owned as a child and I spent hours dressing that doll in scarves and fabric scraps.

There isn’t anything from my parents house that I really want that I don’t already have in my own home. My Grannie had a beautiful one armed couch. It was black and gold with tassels and a wood frame. A cousin took it after she passed because I was living in a tiny apartment and had no room for it and I’ve never seen it again.

My mother's grand piano. Though it lives w/my sister and that's perfect. She wanted me to take it, but moving a piano is expensive and not good for the piano.

This makes me kind of sad because we moved around so often, my parents would always sell or trash a lot between moves. For several years, my sister and I would save our money and buy a horse, train it, love it, then dad would decide to move. He would sell the horse without telling us and give us $10 saying he'd give us the rest of the money later, but we never saw anything. After 3 horses, we decided not to get anymore horses. The heartbreak was too much and we were old enough to realize he'd never play fair.
So I'm pretty sure, if we had our wish, my sis and I would like our horses back.

Yep, definitely my records. I have most of my records through the years, also have DH's. I would love to have the old 45's we had though. My sister and BIL gave me theirs when they moved. They had stored them in their attic, but most were in good shape. She had some of mine I wish I had my Barbies and baby dolls, Madame Alexander from childhood. I have seen the baby doll a couple of times at estate sales and did not buy. Childhood, a country you can never go back to.

I've just recently begun a quest to find a plastic terrarium like my mom had--it was about three feet tall with a white base and round clear top, and I loved nothing more than sticking my face into the hole at the top and inhaling the 'rainforest' smell! Mom held on to that thing through a couple of moves and probably only got rid of it about 25 years ago, but didn't even think of asking me if I wanted it--she just thought it was junk that was taking up space!

I don't have anything saved from my childhood growing up except one doll because we moved every 2-3 years from the time I was born until I moved away from home at the age of 21. I still am very lucky to have both parents still living, so I choose my collection of Liddle Kiddle dolls and all of their accessories.
Anyone remember those? This was in the 1960's and they were very tiny rubber dolls. Each had a name and like Lemons Stiddle came with a Lemonade Stand (she and her lemonade stand are available on Ebay right now for $65.00!) I had a collection of about 8-10 dolls and my sister had the same. We played with a family of 2 sisters across the street who also had the dolls when I was young and we used to construct and entire city in their backyard for our dolls. Oh what fun times we had!
I remember we were one of the first homes to get a fire or smoke alarm (I was too young to know the difference) and my father talked to us about fire drills, getting out of the house etc. That night I took each of my dolls and tied her around my wrist in a line with a shoe string so if we had a fire they would all make it out with me. My father saw what I'd done and said, "Debbie, if we do have a fire don't worry about that. Don't you know I'll buy you all new Kiddles?" He didn't understand that I didn't want new Kiddles. I wanted my Kiddles. They were special. I'd give anything to have those Kiddles back.

I'm sorry you weren't able to save the letters. This was one thing I was able to save. I have an entire hat box full of handwritten letters dating back 40 to 50 years ago. I am so grateful now that I saved them. I have letters from deceased grandmothers, my parents, friends, and siblings. Back before email this was how we all communicated and it's a great reminder of how much feeling can be transmitted through handwriting vs. a computer screen. I was very lucky at one time in my life to have a great penpal from England that I met through a singer's fan club that we both liked. We wrote to each other for several years and I even got a chance to meet her when I flew to Germany one time year to visit my grandmother with my 15 month old son and mother. I left my son with my mother and grandmother and flew to England to spend a week with her and her husband. We had a blast together and I'm so glad I did it. My only regret is that we lost touch several years ago and I've been unable to track her down even with facebook. I'd love to find her again.

My father and mother built my childhood house from the foundation up basically by themselves. They strated when I was 5 and we moved in before I turned 6. In the kitchen we had a built in table. My spot was in the back corner. There was faux wood paneling on the wall. I used to make shapes out of the patterns on the wood paneling - like you do with clouds in the sky. There was one panel right next to where I sat that looked like a shadow profile of Yosemite Sam. I used to stare at that thing for hours not finishing the healthy food on my plate. I'd love to have that panel and frame it as a rememberance of everything my parents did for our family. My parents were forced to move out of state because of a job change while I was in college and they sold the house -- although I think that wood paneling had been removed before that time. We had continued building on to the house while we lived there over the years adding a dining room and a family room -- a garage and more. The table was removed at some point (because we had moved our eating to the dining room) and more cabinets and a countertop were added in its place if I remember correctly.

Great thread. My childhood memories are active ones with my sisters, usually outdoors. I had much more that I wish I could have preserved from my home that my children were born in. My ex threw away tons of items that I wanted to keep (my scrapbooks, boxes of photos, photo albums, video-tapes...). I made specific baby books for both of my children with pics and hand-written notes for them about each special step they took. What a shame that ALL of that work went into them and my children never got to see them.
I also miss my basement door, where I'd measure and mark my children's growth. I have SO many things I would have liked to preserve, but I didn't have the chance. It broke my heart for a while...
